Laptop advice, daughters current machine is near the end

Not looking to spend a ton, $500 or less. Preferably less as this is her last year in college and she will only be using it for the standard stuff. Surfing, papers, email etc.

Newegg currently had this i-5 on sale from lenovo with free shipping..

Newegg.com - Lenovo Essential G580 15.6" LED Notebook - Intel - Core i5 i5-3230M 2.6GHz - Dark Brown

Any help, thoughts, advice much appreciated.

IMO, best place for to look for deals. Lots of laptops out there.

Hot Deals - Slickdeals.net

I like Lenovo Thinkpads, more business focused and rugged. No experience with their consumer versions.

I think Toshiba makes a very good laptop for the price.

I just bought a Dell inspirion for less than $500. I had my last one for 5 years with no issues.

My wife picked this one up for like 350 today.

Lenovo Ideapad S405-59351953 14" Laptop | Staples®

Build quality looks reasonable for that kind of money.

What about a Chromebook? Seems like you can do all the basics and they have good battery life.

Not anymore from my experience. They used to be great, durable laptops, but their quality has gone way down the last few years IMO.

And yes, stay far the hell away from HP. Their computers have always been shit.

Thanks everyone for the replies. After reading reviews, reviewing prices and features, and taking into account no one here has put in a "stay away" warning we went ahead and ordered the Lenovo. Seemed almost everything else in this price range was an i-3 so might as well get the i-5 for the same money.

Thanks again.
