IWS #207 Results

It wasn't the most superheroic turnout. However, I salute the brave 29 champions of virtue who enlightened us with their stupidity and made this day a more glorious night!

Nuts and Bolts Comment
This one was a little unbalanced as there were 4 eliminators and only 2 that could be considered splitters. However, we didn't get a perfect entry so there's still hope for everyone, even if you missed an answer. That said, if you missed one of the eliminators, you're out.

1. Some big bad guy is threatening earth. What group of heroes do you call? Avengers, X-Men, or Justice League?
I figured this would be straight eliminator: Avengers is the most recent movie. If this were a couple of years ago, it would have been X-Men. I was hoping to peel off a few more votes but it was going to be unlikely. If you didn't have Avengers, you can just ignore the results section as you were nowhere near the top. I'm mildly surprised Justice League did as well as it did.
Avengers: 21
X-Men: 4
Justice League: 4

2. Speaking of big bad guys, name a Marvel Universe villain (see intro if you need help with which is which).
I suspected Magneto might win this going away but I thought that since an X-Men movie with him was a little while ago, we might get a bit more of a split. Loki and Green Goblin were expected with the recent Avengers and Spiderman movies. But I don't get Dr Doom's strong showing- can someone explain that to me. And, Mephisto?
Magneto: 17
Dr Doom: 5
Loki: 4
Green Goblin: 2
Mephisto: 1

3. And, while we're at it: name a DC Universe villain (see intro if you need help with which is which).
I was surprised it was an eliminator. I thought it would be a splitter with the Joker edging out Lex Luthor and maybe a couple of Banes as Stupid can often not remember past the last year. But I guess Heath Ledger's Joker left an indelible mark on the moviegoing populace. Or there's a lot of Cesar Romero fans.
The Joker: 24
Lex Luthor: 4
Bane: 1

4. We all know stupid would pick Wolverine. Name another one of the X-Men.
I figured this would be another splitter between Cyclops and Professor X as they're both leaders in some aspect of the team so finally I was right about predicting where a question would go. There was a lot of back and forth between Cyclops and Professor X with each taking the lead a couple of times. Eventually Scott Summers came out on top.
Cyclops 13
Professor X 11
Storm 3
Jean Grey 1
Magneto 1

5. Some superheroes are cooler than others. Who is the lamest superhero?
I figured Aquaman would win this going away or that it would be a two "hero" "race" (pun intended) between him and The Flash. Ten entries in, there were 9 different answers and I thought we were in for an upset. Then the natural order of things was restored as Aquaman was on the next 12(!) entries. I enjoyed the couple of answers of "Sorry, Aquaman". And that rogues gallery of 1s is great: Captain Planet? How did you choose Zan out of the Wonder Twins?
Aquaman 16
Superman 2
Green Lantern 1
The Tick 1
Robin 1
Captain Planet 1
Ant Man 1
Wonder Woman 1
Spiderman 1
Hawkeye 1
Green Hornet 1
Zan 1
Iron Man 1

6. Name an actor or actress who is well known for playing a superhero on tv or in movies.
I wasn't comfortable with my guess but I thought Christopher Reeve would win not only because his Superman was famous but he was never in much else that was notable. However, it's been a long time since then and I think what this shows is that no one has really been an iconic superhero figure since him. I was a little disappointed that we didn't see Lou Ferrigno or some more "less popular" answers like we did in the last question.
Christopher Reeve 12
Christian Bale 6
Hugh Jackman 5
Robert Downey Jr 3
Adam West 1
Dean Cain 1
Scarlett Johansson 1

And now for the Results:

Robin
You're not even your own hero: you're just a sidekick
.
britrock88 480
MIJB#19 6,240
Marc Vaughan 6,552

Aquaman
Your ability to speak with fish did you little good here
.
Young Drachma 25,704
Subby 36,864
nilodor 44,352
TRO 65,520

The Flash
You're really annoying and way too fast; You must be a hit with the ladies
.
cschex 110,880
spleen1015 215,424
CrimsonFox 215,424
ntndeacon 276,480
DougW 308,448
PurdueBrad 332,640

The Hulk
You're big, you're green, and you smash things. That's not always useful.
stevew 565,488
Desnudo 599,040
Tasan 891,072

Cyclops
You nominally "lead" but you have training wheels (The Professor) and a much cooler team member (Wolverine) who steals all the headlines so you're basically an annoying older sibling
.
Sublime 2 1,336,608
Izulde 1,723,392
Mustang 1,774,080

Green Lantern
You're pretty solid: When people call up the Watchtower looking for help and Supes and the Bat aren't around, you probably are their next choice.
albionmoonlight 3,564,288
cuervo72 3,564,288
SackAttack 3,564,288
Coffee Warlord 4,523,904

Captain America
You're not quite in that highest pantheon of superheroes but you're definitely a 1941 classic and only mildly showing your age like Jeep, Citizen Kane, and racist grandpa.
hoopsguy 6,289,920
Joe 8,910,720
StLee 9,047,808

The Wonder Twins
Yeah, you tied for 2nd place which sounds pretty good but really just makes you a pair of losers.
#2 Vince, Pt. II 10,692,864
#2 General Mike 10,692,864

Superman
You are the iconic winner who is not quite perfect, a lot of people hate you, and whose work is never done; Now get started on IWS #208 (and congrats on being a first time winner).

Goddamn I'm good. Especially because if I had picked Cyclops I wouldn't be able to live with myself, perfect score or not.

Wait, this is the only time I've ever done one of these ... now I have to write my own???

As for Dr. Doom, I think you got more "comic reader" answers than you expected.

I got tied up so I didn't get one sent in, but I had them all but went third with Jackman. I guess Reeve is showing the age of some posters.

I assumed there would be more movie watchers than comic readers answering. In retrospect, Aquaman was so obvious

Ouch. Then I failed as my goal is to have a no Google. I figured the hint in the top: "The Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men are Marvel" would yield either Loki or Magneto as practically everyone has seen an Avengers or X-Men movie.

If you don't want to (like Lathum last time), you can let the Wonder Twins do it instead.

But if you do it, make sure to update the Hall of Heroes with your win, update the flavor question, and do whatever you want to the rules, knowing full well that the next person will just cut and paste what you do

It was fascinating to watch results come in. Seriously: with the first 10 entries and only 2 Aquamans and 8 other distinct answers, I felt like I was watching an early upset in an NCAA game. Then, about halftime, the big name school reeled off a 20-2 type run and it became a laugher.

I really did think Lex and Joker would split that vote since Batman has more "name" villains to choose from. The result surprised me

I even mentioned in my PM to SI that my heart said Luthor, but Stupid told me The Joker. That and that I liked Adam West as a much better answer for number 6 but knew that answer wouldn't get the love it deserved.

Lex is really the only other DC villain to consider, I think, that has any mainstream recognition. But I think he's just too generic that non-comic readers, even ones who might have seen him in the movies, probably don't remember him. Whereas the Joker is very memorable, and doubly so after The Dark Knight.
