Re-Imagining The USFL (A Pen & Paper Dynasty)

So I've been wanting to this for awhile. I'm going to start in 1983 with the idea that no NFL players ever play in this league. There will be no stats or players, just an old fashioned hand written schedule and games played using a deck of cards.

I wrote the schedule template for the leagues initial setup myself (fingers crossed I didn't screw it up), and will be using a virtual deck of cards to play out the game using football related cards, 3,6,7,9,10, face cards are 0, the red joker is 13 and the black joker is 14.

Each team gets 1 cards per quarter with the only caveats being that the home team gets 1 extra card per game and that the team with a better record gets 1 extra card per game in order to foster non parity and make homefield mean something, even if only slightly. In the playoffs the higher seed gets 1 extra card.

Each team will play home and away vs every other team in their division and 6 out of division games divided evenly between the two other divisions, 3 home and 3 away for a 16 game schedule.

The 3 Division champions and 1 Wildcard team will make the playoffs in a 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3 setup.

Have you ever used the game Quick Play Football? It's realistic, but only generates scores (either quarter by quarter or possession by possession). It's a simple dice game, but is pretty realistic in its output. I've been thinking of writing a program for a while that will generate semi-random ratings for me, I play the games and then take that output and have my program generate standings, Top 25 polls, etc.

Thanks. I actually got the itch when I found an old deck of playing cards. I found 3 decks and took out all the football cards and was going to do it by hand on actual pen and paper until I found a random card generator online.

A few rules changes heading into 1984.

1) Starting in week 9, A home team with a losing record does not get the extra card.

2) I always draw 10 cards, in an instance where a team has a 1 card advantage it can pick from either of the last two cards to add to it's score. In 1983 I just looked at the 9th card in these situations.

3) Week one is not a clean slate. Advantages will be based on last years final standings.

The idea is to softly nudge teams towards have and have nots, which is how I enjoy my fictional games.

Interesting first month of the season. More undefeated and winless teams than last year at this time, hopefuly that's a reflection of the system. As far as the league goes, not a whole not to draw on but clearly Chicago went out and improved their team, while Birmingham is struggling out of the gate. Is Jacksonville for real? Relocation And Expansion

With two solid years of games and ratings under it's belt, the USFL will take it's first steps forward in 1985.

The Colts leaving Baltimore has given our league an opportunity to step in and fill a void in a major football city. To that end, The Baltimore Mustangs are the leagues first expansion franchise. Joining them will be the New Orleans Soul.

In addition to expansion, The Portland Breakers are headed East. The team has relocated to the city of Boston.

With 20 teams, the league will move to a 2 conference, 4 division setup with alignment as follows.
