Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 29-year-old José Serrano put together a solid offensive month for Halifax and was crowned April's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .297 with 5 home runs, 13 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

Winter Wolves Starter Named April's Premier Pitcher

In April, Pablo Hernández tore through the Continental League like a seasoned veteran -- quite impressive for a player only 24 years old.

The young Halifax starter posted a 4-0 mark and an ERA of 3.07 to earn the Pitcher of the Month award. In 41 innings he collected 41 strikeouts while limiting the opposition to a .223 average.

José González took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award for April.

The 24-year-old Rancheros starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 4-0 won-lost record in 6 starts. This month he fanned 24 batters in 42.2 innings and compiled a 1.48 ERA.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month

Fernando Torres is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In April the Cleveland hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .301 average with 25 hits, 1 home run and 8 RBIs.


RL Announces Rookie of the Month

José González is beginning to make a name for himself and he did it by posting a 4-0 record and a 1.48 ERA in April. For his spectacular mound performance last month he has been named BNN's Rookie of the Month in the Republic League.

The 24-year-old newcomer isn't at all intimidated by his lack of experience, at least not outwardly. In fact, by the way he has pitched beyond his years, you could easily mistake him for a veteran.

In 6 starts for the Rancheros González has struck out 24 batters in 42.2 innings, holding opposing hitters to a batting average of .189 during his hot streak.

CL's Top Hitter Selected

Beach balls were coming in at Kuniyoshi Sato in May and he banged, bashed and blasted them all over the park, putting up a .330 batting average and hauling in the Continental League Batter of the Month trophy.

The 25-year-old Noblesville catcher collected 36 hits last month in 28 games. He put up 10 home runs, 25 RBIs and 25 runs scored. Sato also drew 10 walks and compiled a .385 on-base percentage.

This year Sato is batting .310 with 15 home runs and 44 RBIs.


RL Presents Batter of Month Trophy to Marsh

Fans, friends and family were cheering today when Elliott Marsh received May's Republic League Batter of the Month Award.

Marsh stung the ball all month, posting a .340 batting average with 10 home runs, 29 RBIs and 26 runs scored.

This season in 55 games Marsh is batting .317 with 12 home runs, 49 RBIs and has scored 43 times.

CL's Best Starter is Hernández

May's best hurler was Pablo Hernández of Halifax. He overwhelmed CL hitters all month long and captured the Pitcher of the Month award as he collected a 3-0 record in 5 starts.

The 24-year-old Hernández added 26 strikeouts in 37.1 innings and 8 walks to his season record and compiled a 0.72 ERA. Other clubs hit .184 against him.

This year Hernández has posted a record of 7 wins and no losses with a 1.95 ERA. He has appeared in 11 games and struck out 67 in 78.1 innings.


Republic League Announces Best Starter

Felipe Longos's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 5-1 in May, the 27-year-old Hartford hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 38 in 44 innings, logged an ERA of 3.27 and allowed opponents to hit .232 against him.

This year Longos has made 11 starts, thrown 76.1 innings, fanned 58 batters and walked 22. His won-lost record is 7-3 with a 3.77 ERA.

CL Selects Rookie Star of the Month

Youngster Fernando Torres emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Cleveland deserved the honor, batting .381 with no home runs and 9 runs batted in. Is the month of May a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Torres enjoy the limelight.

For the year Torres has hit .341 with 1 home run, 17 RBIs and scored 21 runs.

Yes, Bert Warren is just a rookie. But he is a special rookie. Today the 24-year-old Ann Arbor starter was awarded the Republic League Rookie of the Month trophy for his standout performance in May.

He dominated the rookie class, registering 3 wins and no losses in 0 starts with 17 strikeouts in 19.2 innings and a 0.92 ERA.

Not bad for a first-year man.

Muñóz Awarded June's CL Top Bat Prize

José Muñóz of the Cleveland Cyclones was named the Continental League's best batter for his fine performance in June.

He compiled a .343 batting average and .368 on-base percentage during the month. In 27 games he piled up 37 hits, 7 home runs, 22 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

Batting .285 to date, Muñóz has 16 home runs and 56 RBIs.


June's Premier Batter Announced

Mario Toro battered Republic League pitchers all June and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 32-year-old Toro told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 28 games, Toro hit .355 with 8 home runs, 22 RBIs and scored 19 runs.

Currently Toro is hitting .315 and has collected 18 home runs, 54 RBIs and scored 49 times, while playing in 83 games.

June's #1 Starter Named in CL

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Jesús García still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in June. The 33-year-old starter for Leduc was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 42 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 1.47 ERA in 43 innings of work.

In 20 starts this season García has notched a 10-8 record and a 2.62 ERA.


Republic League Names #1 Pitcher in June

The Colorado Rancheros felt very secure when they sent Ricardo Mendoza out to the hill last month. The 26-year-old starter went after Republic League hitters with a vengeance and earned June's Pitcher of the Month award.

Jeff Murphy earned June's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Cleveland shortstop might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Murphy hit .211 with 5 home runs, 10 RBIs and 10 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

In 84 games Murphy is hitting .186 this season with 51 hits, 9 home runs, 22 RBIs, 22 walks, .298 OBP and has scored 29 runs.

Dickson Wins CL's Best Bat Award

July's Hitter of the Month has been selected by the Continental League. This month's trophy was presented to the Noblesville center fielder, Bruce Dickson.

He starred by hitting .354 with a .422 on-base percentage, totaled 34 hits in 96 at-bats, 6 home runs, 23 RBIs and scored 20 runs.

Hitting .309 to date, Dickson has 17 home runs and 75 RBIs. He has played in 108 games.


July's Best Batter Announced

Prospective free agents love to have hot streaks and Hiroharu Goto is no exception. The Colorado left fielder capped off a fine month by hauling in Batter of the Month honors in the Republic League.

In July Goto hit .440 with 8 home runs, 28 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

Thus far this season Goto has hit .329 with 17 home runs, 58 RBIs and scored 47 times.

CL Selects Hernández July's #1 Pitcher

The Noblesville Millers owe Javier Hernández a lot for his performance this past month. One of the league's most dominant starters in July, Hernández tore up the opposition with a fine 5-0 mark on his way to the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

"When you're pitching this well," analyzed Hernández, "it's a lot easier to come to the park. I don't judge my performance by the stats, I judge it -- the team judges it -- by the score of the game. I could say I'm tossing electric stuff right now and that would go over big. But if I toss that same stuff -- exact same pitch selection and location -- and they bang me around tomorrow, I was awful. That's the way baseball is."

It was Hernández who did the banging in July as he tossed up 35 strikeouts in 37 innings, holding opponents to a .155 average and posting a 1.70 ERA.

Thus far this season, Hernández has worked 143.2 innings with 103 strikeouts en route to a 12-7 record and a 3.57 ERA.


Germán Wins RL Top Pitcher Honors

It was a sensational July for Ramón Germán as he mystified, mesmerized and terrorized opposing batters to capture the Republic League Pitcher of the Month trophy.

Germán locked down a 4-0 mark in 5 starts last month, striking out 39 while walking 4 in 37.2 innings and posting a 1.19 ERA.

This year Germán has posted a 13-5 mark in 22 starts and has a 3.37 ERA.

Murphy Named Newcomer of the Month

Jeff Murphy's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Cleveland shortstop has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In July he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .226 with 8 doubles, no triples and 6 home runs. Murphy also scored 18 times and drove in 10 runs.

In this current campaign Murphy is hitting at a .196 clip with 15 home runs and 32 RBIs.


Rookie Reels In Republic League Award

With July's Republic League Rookie of the Month title slung over his shoulder, Thurman Hansen has no reason to be modest about his statistical output. But he was, telling BNN reporters, "I just put the bat on the ball a lot and a lot of them fell in. It was just my month to shine."

The 22-year-old blistered the baseball last month as he posted a .291 batting average, 16 hits, 5 home runs, 13 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

So far this season Hansen is batting .260 with 15 home runs.

Jesús Hernández Selected August's Best Batter

He racked up 8 home runs and 20 RBIs, scored 20 runs.

RL Best Hitter Trophy Goes to Sánchez

Andrés Sánchez really smoked the ball in August on his way to Batter of the Month honors in the Republic League.

This year Sánchez has collected a .331 batting average to date with 170 hits in 514 at-bats, 83 RBIs, 25 home runs and scored 103 times. He has played in 129 games.

Martínez Is August's Top Starter

Jaime Martínez is the latest Continental League Pitcher of the Month trophy winner. The Baltimore starter sparkled on the diamond time and again last month and finished August with an outstanding 4-0 record.

In 6 starts he tossed 40.1 innings, posted 42 strikeouts, and sported a 2.23 ERA.

On his stats sheet for the year Martínez shows a 7-13 record, 28 starts, 190.1 innings, 135 strikeouts and a 4.35 ERA.

It was a very good month for Tomohiko Murakami in August. The 37-year-old veteran starter for the Ann Arbor Winged Lingerines outpitched everybody -- young and old -- to claim the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award earlier today.

Murakami ran up a 5-0 record in his 6 starts during the month. In 43.2 innings he fanned 26 and recorded a 3.50 ERA.

Currently Murakami has a 10-9 won-lost record in 27 starts with a 5.88 ERA. He also has 99 strikeouts in 163.2 innings.
