WSOP Pool 2013

Rules:

Pick 10 Poker Players

1 of the poker players must be female
1 of the poker players must not have a bracelet.
1 of your picks can be made "Money Man" and they will score double points for you.
1 of your picks can be made "Main Event Champion". If they win the Main Event, you win the pool by default. (This has never happened, but we've had deep runs by Allen Cunningham, Phil Ivey, and Michael Mizrachi).

Scoring is based on cash won by your players. You get 1 point for every $1,000 your picks earn.

This will be the 10th year of the contest. Previous winners...

2012 - hoopsguy
2011 - Quiksand
2010 - jbergey22
2009 - Comey
2008 - MollyMurphy
2007 - timmynausea
2006 - Barkeep49
2005 - Chubby
2004 - albionmoonlight

I started this a little late, so try to get your picks in before the final table of Event #2 starts. It starts at 5pm today and is expected to be a 4 day event.

We had some controversy last year on whether the One Drop should count, but since the One Drop buy in is down to $111k, I think it should count as normal.

You can still enter if you miss the first couple events. They just won't count in your score.

The numbers are still higher than last year. I'm not sure. With online coming back, it could be back on the upswing.

Live Reporting | Event #62: $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em Main Event | 2013 World Series of Poker | Five-Way All-In Pot Shipped To Sohrabi; Three Players Eliminated | PokerNews

Five way all in that featured someone snap calling allin for 40K (with four others, 3 all in already) with 43d

Donka-Donka-Donk!

Edit: You can't even say he was pot committed, as he had an above average chip stack if he folded.

Another guy snap-called two all-ins with 10-6. He claimed he misread his hand, thinking he had pocket tens.

I'm not sure I believe that one...I'm not sure how you can misread a six into a ten. An eight or nine, perhaps, if you're looking at the symbols on the card and not the number straight off. But still...

Just eye-balling the standings, I'm feeling pretty good heading into the main event. Esfandiari's One Drop score definitely helps out everyone who picked him. I believe my selection of Jeff Madsen also has the second highest with his bracelet in the $3k pot limit Omaha. but Matusow and Chiu also bracelets for others. Cunningham, Galfond, Negreau and Seiver have runner-up finishes for some of our players.

Once in a lifetime , someone moves all in with a royal flush, and doesn't win the pot

7/8/2013 8:51:06 PM PST (about 33 minutes ago)

Royal Flush for Everyone

"Ohhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!" we heard from Table 38 in the Silver Section of the Brasilia Room.

Now, in the Main Event, yelling and cheering is common, even for regular occurrences, but this was different. When we looked over to the table, all but two players - the ones in the hand - had their cameras out, taking a picture of the board. Even a massage therapist paused to reach for her smart phone and capture whatever it was that had the entire table gushing.

When we finally arrived, their were two players heads up on a board of KH TH QH JH AH . Yes, there was a royal flush on the board. One player moved all in, and the other called.

"Very funny, guys," the dealer said.

The two players showed Qx2h and 9x6h , meaning they both turned flushes as well, but the gentleman with the deuce of hearts was fortunate enough to chop.

The dealer held the board for a few more pictures, then finally washed the cards and began riffling in preparation of a new hand.

"I shuffled too!" the dealer made sure to say.

If I'm doing the math right (20 cards that are possibly royal flush worthy of 52, then 4 of 51, 3 of 50, 2 of 49 and 1 of 48), the percentage of a royal flush on the board are:

0.00000153907% or 64974301.662692405 to 1

Players who made the money:

Humberto Brenes$$ (ntndeacon) - 38.212
Allen Cunningham (kingfc22) - 32.342
Michael Mizrachi (kcchief19, larrymcg421, rockboy70) - 24.48

Annette Obrestad (Quiksand) is the only player left. No ME winner picks are left. That means if Annette finishes 18th or better than Quiksand will become the first two time winner. If Annette finishes 19th or worse, then kcchief19 takes the title.

As a group we didn't do well this year. Or maybe we can say the traditional pros didn't do well this year. I see only a handful of names remaining I recognize.

I think I want to win more just so the tradition of no repeat winners continues.

I'm attending a fundraiser poker tournament tonight that is supposed to feature Grant Hinkle with a $100 bounty on his head. He just got knocked out yesterday, so I'm putting his attendance at 20%. I'm more perplexed why he would commit to an event on the final day of the Main Event.

Couple of thoughts seeking confirmation:

1. If Carlos Mortensen were to make the final table, would that make it three players who have made two Main Event final tables since 2001 along with Harrington and Matusow? Anybody else I'm forgetting?

2. Would Mortensen be the second former champ to make a final table in the Poker Boom era along with Harrington?

I'm actually kind of surprised none of us took JC Tran. He's got a couple of bracelets, good at a couple of different games, and he's made a few ME cashes. Would be cool to see him and Mortensen at a final table.

I believe you're correct on both of those. Raymer got really close in his follow up year and Hellmuth made a pretty deep run (to somewhere in the 40s I think). In 2003, Ivey was still alive when it was down to one table, but busted before the "official" final table began. So he has technically twice made it to one table left.

Final table set. All are pretty seasoned players, all with respectable success in the game. Should be interesting. Still would have liked to see Mortensen in it though.

Marc Newhouse was a regular back in the day on 2+2. I think he might have won one of the early Party Poker cruise tourneys, too.

Then he went broke and got sending his junk around on text. Not kidding.

Benefield was also on 2+2 a lot as raptor. Seems like a kid with his head on straight...went back to school after the poker boom.

Just saw the list for the final table.

Am I completely nuts to think that Tran looks like an almost prohibitive favorite here?

He's certainly the favorite, but I wouldn't call him the "prohibitive favorite" by any means.

I believe only one chip leader in the November Nine era has won it, so it almost makes sense to take the field. But no player as accomplished as Tran has been chip leader going to the final table.

Bovada has Tran at 9/5, and that sounds right to me. With his talent and chip stack, it's his to lose.
