Youth Coaching
Was wondering if anyone had any advice on getting my foot in the door with coaching basketball? Is it even possible to coach 5th or 6th grade basketball kids if you don't have a child that age yourself? If it is, I was wondering where to begin.

What Jimga said. My 15 year-old is going to coach a team of 6th graders with two of his buddies. The team is in our local youth basketball league. I have been heavily involved with youth sports leagues over the past decade and one of the common themes is that they are always hard up for volunteer coaches/managers.

korme, I am not sure where you live, but I know that at Kettering's rec center they are always looking for volunteers to help out with their youth basketball program. I would recommend stopping by there (or your local city's rec center) to get some information on when the season starts and the commitment that's involved. I'm sure they would welcome the help, as I know my son's 5th grade team was basically a parent coaching a team of about 10.

Everyone's always looking for willing referees too. A good way to make connections.
