Whoops, I got those switched around. I meant that spot to be Wisconsin. Thanks for pointing it out.

So, Stanford, who just beat Oregon this past week, is 5th, while Oregon is #3?

This is a result of Oregon's tendency to pound its opponents. The Ducks' SOS is 38th compared to Stanford's 7th, but Oregon's mMOV is 20.2 against the Cardinal's 11.3. A 6-point home victory for Stanford in the head-to-head matchup also suggests that the teams are on pretty even footing; the W-L result itself does not necessitate that Stanford leap Oregon in the ranking. |

I've actually thought about this before. If you look at the two teams abstractly, you have two one loss teams. One lost to an unranked opponent, the other lost to the #5 team in the country. One of those is a much more quality loss than the other. Is Stanford better than Oregon? They were on THAT DAY, but does that make them a better team? Pretty sure if we could play the Oregon/Stanford game 100 times, it'd be damn near a 50/50 split on who wins. Edit: I also realize this isn't the argument your ranking system is using, brit. True that the math doesn't think about the relative standing of the teams as you have. But your point is well taken, all the same. |

The six point loss to Stanford doesn't represent how badly Stanford beat down Oregon.

That's where including statistics in the equation is helpful, because even though the score was close, if you look at the primary stats from the game you'd expect a wider margin.
Six points for the home team is about what you'd expect from evenly-matched teams. A rating includes all results from a season. While a team never has an equivalent effort in every game, I hope that by the time they've played 8-9 games, we've seen a representative sample of that team. Some teams are more consistent than others. One of the measures I use in my ratings is a total strength of victory. It represents, basically, "what have you accomplished this season." In that measure, Stanford is #1 in the country (Fresno State is 29th and Northern Illinois is 45th). |

I have always assumed that when a team beats another team head-to-head, and the records are the same, then the team that WON would be ranked higher than the team that lost. Then again, you still have Alabama at 2, while Auburn you have at 9, and both are in the same conference, so I would assume that my logic doesn't suit you.
