Johnny Orr, we hardly knew ye.......
Legendary ISU coach passes away. For someone like me who grew up loving college basketball watching all the fantastic coaches in the Big 8, this is extremely sad to see.
Johnny Orr, Norm Stewart, Eddie Sutton, Larry Brown, Lon Kruger..........not all of them were HOF level coaches, but I can't remember another time where it was just as much fun to watch the sidelines as it was to watch the games. Hell, Danny Nee couldn't win at all, but even he was greatly entertaining. RIP Johnny. Sad to hear. ~20 years ago my brother and 2 friends won a bid to golf in a foursome with Johnny Orr. The stories he tells from that one afternoon are priceless.
RIP Coach. |

As an Iowa fan, with a real distaste for all things ISU, I did respect Orr and what he did at ISU.
Sad day for that University.

I'm embarrassed to say I forgot Billy Tubbs in that list. One of the best if not the best of the sideline characters of the Big 8.

We had season tickets growing up - he was my early idea of what a basketball coach was. His wife was my P.E. teacher one year. They were a big part of the community.

Another great story was how Johnny Orr took the ISU job. He was at the time (and still is) the all-time wins leader at Michigan. ISU contacted Johnny Orr about the possibility of hiring his assistant coach (Bill Freider) as the new head coach at ISU. When they told Johnny what the salary would be at ISU, Johnny told them to forget about the assistant. He he left the Michigan job, took the ISU job on the spot and the rest is history.
