Office 2013 vs. 2010

We're currently on Office 2010, but have 3 new computers (out of 4 in the office) coming in next week. Thinking if Office 2013 doesn't suck we may take this opportunity to upgrade to it.

Any bad experiences with it that should stop me from doing that?

I am fine with it. The UI has changed a bit and it has the Win 8 feel to it, but it is perfectly ok with me so far and I have been using 2010.

No major gotcha's that I have hit yet

It feels a little slower and less responsive- but we're talking fractions of a second. To me, it's noticeable but not a killer.

Word has a really nice feature of asking you if you want to start where you left off (when editing 20+ page documents, it's a godsend). Excel feels a bit like editing a webpage. If you copy a formula from one cell to another, it will "flip" - you'll see what I mean. Outlook changed up their address book format, which kindof annoyed me as I was in the middle of doing an address book update when I upgraded and haven't gone back to updating it but that's not necessarily on the software.

Like MacroGuru said, it has a little of Win8 UI feel but mostly it's just a new coat of paint on 2010. Then again, I've only used Word, Excel, and Outlook for any length of time.

Love the sound of that Word feature - as someone who works on 80 page documents that sounds like a frigging godsend. Easier than my old manual way of highlighting the line where i left off in bright pink or whatever.

Here's the catch: It feels like it works about 95% of the time. For some inexplicable reason, occasionally it doesn't give me the option (you get a little bookmark icon that you click on at the bottom of the screen that takes you back to the page). But maybe there's something about what I'm doing on the document the previous time that causes it to not appear but maybe the last thing I did was edit a table or something on the first page. Hasn't been frequent enough for me to bother to figure out the answer.

People can do that now. There's a 30 or 60 day trial version of it.

I am talking Office for Business on the SMB or Enterprise side.

And yes he can sign up for free on their site.

I was looking more as a biz assistance for DT on his side considering this is what I do professionally and provide guidance for him at no cost.....

Is Office 365 SB Premium going to be overkill for us though? Seems like we're paying for a lot of stuff we won't use. Essentially all we really need is 6 installs of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook, and at a minimum 1 install of Publisher (for me).

We don't need Lync, InfoPath, shared calendars, Exchange space (we have our Exchange emails hosted for legal reasons), SharePoint, or really any of the cloud collaboration stuff (we have VPNs in to our server with all our documents on it).

Hah - the computers just arrived. Day ahead of schedule.

Can Office 365 run on a Windows XP system?

I've upgraded all of our other computers, but we have one person's backup computer that they want to install it on in their home office and I'm curious how well it would run.

I seem to recall trying to install it on my old work desktop (exact same machine) and having issues and just saying "fuck it" and going out and buying a new bottom-of-the-barrel desktop to put it on, but what's the real deal?

Yeah, we had a couple of XP machines around here that had it installed on.

Oh no - I think I remember the issue.

We use salesforce for a CRM. Salesforce has a plugin that syncs with Outlook. In order to install the plugin (which doesn't work with Office 365 Click-to-Run installer because it's missing some files) you have to download a disk image of Office 365 (i want to say professional) and install that. And Office 365 professional doesn't work with XP I want to say?

Or maybe I'm crazy.

I just don't want to have to go out and spend money on a new computer or a software upgrade for this machine if there's no reason to, given that it's not going to get very heavy use at all.

I'm pretty sure that's the issue - I had the same old desktop as him and tried to upgrade my Office here at home and ran into a problem (from my recollection that was it) and rather than upgrade the old desktop to Win7 just went out and spent $279 on a new bottom-level desktop so it would be easy to install Office365.

I'd just do that for him, but I really don't want to. I don't think he'll use it all that much - his place is literally like 5 minutes from the office and he already has a laptop running Office365 and all configured beautifully so I'm tempted to just tell him that for the limited use it'll get he should just use his laptop to check his email. If he's got any more significant work to do then he'll be driving the 5 minutes to the office to do it anyways.
