Interesting on Kershaw's deal--he has no "no trade" clause.
But where his is interesting, is that he has negotiated that he can trigger an opt out option for the following offseason if he is traded midseason, or for the next offseason, if he is traded during the offseason (plus, he gets a $3 M trade bonus for an offseason trade). Basically, if he is ever traded, you're going to have to pay him big time to get him to stay in past the next offseason.

Seeing that Tanaka is only 25, that may not be a bad deal at all.

Well of course its a ton of risk. Then again, we are talking about the Yankees here. They can deal with some risk... especially with some big money coming off the payroll soon.

The opt-out after only 4 years is the part that gets me. Any team was going to be assuming a lot of risk, but that basically eliminates the chance for any surplus value.

Now that the Yankees are safely over the luxury tax, are they really gonna start Kelly Johnson and Brian Roberts in the infield?
Btw, Bruce Arthur @bruce_arthur 20s Also, per @joelsherman1, the Yankees didn't give Tanaka a physical themselves, and trusted the agent's physical. Sounds foolproof. |

Not really much coming off soon. Jeter and Kuroda next year? It's 28M. And that's pretty much taken care of by A-Rod returning to the books. Most of their big tickets are around at least the next three years. For instance, in 2015, they have the following obligations: $25.137 Rodriguez $22.500 Teixeira $24.400 Sabathia $22.143 Tanaka $21.857 Ellsbury $17.000 McCann $15.000 Beltran $03.500 Thornton $02.500 Ryan Subtotal = $154.037M for just 9 players. Can't they recover a lot of A-Rod's salary though? Depending on what happens this year, of course? I'm sure they'll sue for it if he doesn't play anymore.

Why would he not want the remaining $61 million he's owed? In order to not get it he has to retire. Do you think he'll do that?
It seems obvious to me that he'll do whatever he has to fuck over the Yankees, as he sees himself as being fucked over by them during the past year. Last edited by Ronnie Dobbs3 : 01-22-2014 at 03:36 PM. |

That's what I mean by a suit. Perhaps on the guilty of steroids stuff voiding a part of his contract.

From everything I've read there's little to no chance of the Yankees being able to void his contract, apart from wishcasting from Yankee fans.

Yeah - they're not going to get to void it. They'll save some $ this year on it, but that's the best they can hope for. He's going to play it out and soak them for every dime now.

Garza to the Brewers for 4/$52. Either the physical on his arm looks bad or the market for pitching dried up quick

Kind of a curious move for the Brewers, I guess. I'm not complaining about the price but I also don't think they are a Matt Garza away from competing. |

Yeah, the best case scenario is that he comes back after this year off and someone like Miami is willing to pay him 3-5m/year and you save yourself 12 of his remaining 67million dollars owed. |

More upside than Nolasco if he can stay healthy. I guess I wasnt expecting this market being held up so the Brewers could sign Garza. Figured it would be one of the heavy hitters going after Garza when Tanaka passed them over.

so it looks like the pathway to easy financial success is
1. pitch good enough at major league level to accrue 6 years of service. 2. at some point, be slightly impressive, although not that impressive. 3. profit This is all Gil Meche's fault. I guess I'm ecstatic that the Pirates are only paying Charlie Morton 7 million a year. Last edited by stevew : 01-23-2014 at 04:30 PM. |

Saw that the Royals signed Bruce Chen. Good signing there. He's a great long relief guy who can be a fill-in starter for a month or two.
Rex Hudler said a couple days ago on the radio that the Royals have a two year offer on the table for Ervin Santana should he decide to come back. I'm guessing he'll get a four year offer somewhere else. |

I'd say that depends on what Ervin decides. I think he could end up in the bullpen if Ervin comes back. No question that the Royals are somewhat pessimistic on that. Chen's a very good 4-5 starter option. As I mentioned last year, it beats the previous years where he was the #1 starter. |

Well, looks like the Pirates probably mangled this AJ Burnett thing. How you didn't offer a QO is beyond me. It basically locks him in to accept it and 14m was pretty much a steal for him. Or you get a #1 pick. I bet now he signs elsewhere and we get nothing. And Gaby Sanchez is still our first baseman.
