You're not going to be able to sign all those guys anyway. Going to have to sacrifice some offense at some point. Outside of a legitimate 40-50 homer signing, there's not much more that the Royals can add to improve their offense. I'd take a 25M pitcher over a 25M slugger any day. |

After being pretty solid over the past few seasons, it looks like pitching is going to be a big question mark for the Rangers going into the season. After Yu Darvish, there are no sure things. A lot of it is going to depend on how well several pitchers come back from injuries.

I do not trust GMDM to act rationally. I also do not expect him to sign a pitcher for $25M a year. Both of you are right!
(But I would sign a hitter for $25M per before I would sign a pitcher for that) SI

Likewise, although my team's current finances are such that that is not necessarily an either/or proposition, I admit. To be honest, I don't think GMDM is going to spend $25 million on any single player, but I do suspect he'd be more likely to spend it on a pitcher than on a hitter, if that fit of irrationality seized him. He is. |

Dayton Moore would much rather spend it on 25x $1M players than 1x $25M player, even if he had the money

Why would I want to spend 25m on one player? I can get 3 Jared Guthrie's for that.

Braves release Garcia and are left with kids | Jeff Schultz blog
Teheran / Wood / Hale / Schlosser is a rotation likely to strike more fear in the hearts of Braves fans than of opposing batters. Santana will, of course, be along whenever he's ready. Other than that the help has to come from Mike Minor & Gavin Floyd who are both still recovering from injuries of their own. Feels like a lost season in Atlanta before it even begins.

Maybe the Rangers, now that Profar is out for 2.5 to 3 months. But the contract announcement came out before the injury one. They do have Rougned Odor and Luis Sardinas coming up fast in the minors, but I don't think either one is ready for the Big Show.

My guess is that Drew has a 3 year deal, but only 1 year of it is guaranteed and there are some significant deferrals. He doesn't want to sign this deal before the Regular Season starts because he doesn't want to be offered a QO again if the team decides to move on from him.

And not for nothin, but would the Pirates stop dicking around and sign Kendrys Morales already? When the best you've got is a severe downgrade from Garrett Jones, it's time to just pay up. He's a legit bat who will make your lineup so much better.

I was thinking they would put him at 2B. He expressed a willingness to do this earlier in the free agent season.

Can Kendrys Morales even play 1B without physically breaking down? Even if he can, he's had 1 above-average season.

My dream 1b scenario is that the Yankees tire of Teixeira after this season and dump him to us with half of his remaining money and then he has two monster years in PNC. He waives his NTC.

Max Sherzer apparently rejected a 6 year/$144 million offer from the Tigers.
Quite the gamble...

That's what, $24 million/year? Maybe it's not the money. Maybe he wants an opt-out clause similar to what Kershaw and Greinke got, and the Tigers aren't (yet) willing to include one.

I guess that could be. But I think we saw this offseason that cash for flawed pitchers is not there. For instance, if he slips from 2013 Max Scherzer to 2009-2012 Max Scherzer, isn't he closer to the 4/$50M range that Garza and Jimenez got or, at best, 5/$85 for Sanchez. And that's a pretty far cry from 6/$144M.

And if he blows his arm out bad enough he might never even see that money. Hope he doesn't regret it, sure he's getting some "impartial" advice from his agent

I think Scherzer is facing two issues. One is, as you say, performance. If he puts up numbers similar to 2013, he then moves into issue #2: the qualifying offer. Now, if he's 2013 Scherzer redux, there's probably a team going to be willing to sign him for the money he's looking for, especially if it's a team with a protected first. If he's not, he's not only going to be hampered by the QO, but he's going to be looking at half the money as his ceiling. |

Sounds like, per MLBTR, the issue was years, not dollars. Tigers offered 6, he wants 8.

That seems awfully silly. $144M guaranteed is such a ridiculous sum of money to walk away from...especially given the volatility of pitchers and how recently Scherzer has become extremely good. That's risk for the agent as well as the player. Seems a little strange.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. And I don't mean in the "baseball money is a lot of money to walk away from" but that "in his situation, as Max Scherzer, that's a lot of money to walk away from". I think we're going to look back at that deal next offseason and laugh or shake his head at how much he walked away from. SI

I don't think Sherzer is that great or worth going for $24m. But he will b the premium arm on the market and he could end up with an offer exceeding 200M. I'd take the 144 in his situation but I get where he's coming from here. He also has made like 25M career to date including this year. Seems like you can get insurance for injury here, perhaps.
