Yeah I'm pretty sure it was over the place when Phantom Menace first came out.

This thread made me realize...I never got around to watching II and III. I think I may have to revisit the series, using the Machete order.

All of I is bad.
Half of II is bad. Basically whenever you see Anakin & Padme on the screen together, start fast-forwarding. III is pretty decent, if considered as a fantasy / action popcorn flick. |

I enjoyed Ep I, but I never expected it to be as good as IV and V. I figured it would be on the level of VI, and was not disappointed. II is still to this day, the only movie that gets worse for me the more I watch it. The only good parts for me are the scenes with Obi-Wan. III would have been a very good movie had they not rushed Anakin's fall.
I feel one of the themes that was not fully explored but there are tons of undertones is that the Jedi Order is in decline. They have become very rigid and mechanical. They don't sense the force in people, they test them for it. They don't discuss feelings at all, they are suppressed. Contrast that with the originals, where it is always to reach out with your feelings. Put yourself out there, etc. so with the Jedis I felt the acting was ok, because it was supposed to be wooden, but that doesn't explain Portman or some of the other wooden acting. |

it's more interesting to me that John Ratzenburger has a small part in Empire
