The 1986-87 season is the first year of high school basketball at The Van Blake School, which is home to the Pioneers. Located in Van Blake, Kentucky in Stovall County, the school is a small private institution founded by Quakers in 1894. The school resisted athletics until this year when a new headmaster initiated the program in an effort to bolster school spirit.

Their head coach is 28-year old Arthur Lammers, who played at Western Hills HS (Frankfort, KY) and who remains the 2nd leading scorer in school history and after walking on at Kentucky decided to pursue a career in coaching. As a young coach, he took the first job he could get and that led him to Van Blake.

We're starting off with a prestige of 3, so hopefully that'll prevent the team from being especially good, though I'm leaving everything on autopilot for the AI to manage and we'll just watch it play out from season to season until there are seniors to try to import and see if they get recruited.

Someone asked what NBA teams we had in my NBA league. So here's the draft order for the year that Tony Patrick enters the draft. He's slotted as a mid-1st round pick.
My NBA league is set to stats only, so there are no ratings which is nice.

The Pioneers finished their first season of District 50 play with a record of 3-27. No big surprises on a team full of freshmen.

All of the juniors except Brian Pace left early. John Ebner graduated too and went pro, but we'll see what foreign league he ends up in, if the game even imports him at all.

Two years into Tony Patrick's NBA career and his rookie deal with the Kentucky Colonels (he went 15th overall) is up now, so he's a free agent. Should be interesting if another team picks him up, he never got a starting gig in Kentucky, but that team made the playoffs two years in a row and lost in the conference finals this year, so...not a real surprise he couldn't log massive PT on that team.

My crazy class of juniors have hit the NBA draft now and so it'll be interesting to see where the end up and manages to stick in the NBA. What's been cool so far is despite the fact that these dudes killed it in HS, were highly touted through college recruiting and even have lit it up in college, none are a surefire bet to dominate the NBA, which I like a lot because it keeps things sane and looks more like real life.

NBA DRAFT
Tito Campus, Duke (Knicks 1.16)
Jimmy Higgins, Louisville (Portland 1.6)
Henry Street, Indiana (Orlando 2.11)
Brian Pace, Murray State
Daniel Rodgers, Illinois (Chicago 1.11)
John Ebner, Central Kentucky

Brian Pace and John Ebner didn't get transferred into the game as NBA worthy, so both went undrafted and maybe we'll see them as coaches someday.

Tony Patrick signed a 1-year deal with the Orlando Magic worth $1.2 million.

I don't have any draft picks coming to the game this year from our league. So I'm going to import a few high school kids directly into the pro game and send them to a foreign league and see how they do.

Here's how our NBA prospects did this past season. Seems like Daniel Rodgers is the first guy to manage to get any real starting time amongst the guys we've imported into the pros. All of the former studs in HS and college haven't necessarily become much in the pros yet.

Here's the rest of them. The CBL is the Canadian Basketball League and for this league, serves as the D-League for the NBA teams. A number of our guys were key players for their C-League teams, but aren't NBA ready yet for whatever reason. Should be interesting to see how they pan out or if they'll end up in Europe. Remember, some of these guys (e.g. Campos) were monster guys in college and in the league, aren't panning so that's kind of interesting but fun that we can't predict where they'll end up once they go pro.

Our designated high school, Van Blake School has hired 25-year old former Murray State star Brian Pace as their new head coach. The school wants to build its basketball program from where it is now. In their 4th season as a program, they had their first winning season at 17-15 and coach Arthur Lammers left to take over the program at Lexington's Tates Creek HS.

We'll see if Pace can handle the gig, fresh from his own time as a player and graduate assistant at his alma mater.

I forgot about:

Jess Barton, PF, Vine Grove (4*)
Kobe Bishop, SF, Ballard (2*)
Marlin Coleman, SG, Covington Catholic (2*)
Nelly Philpot, PG, Apollo (3*)

They were in the class after Tito Campos on those guys. But they weren't as good and I forgot about them until I noticed Jess Barton as a top prospect in this class.

Nelly Philpot is also listed as a possible draftee in this particular class, but no idea if he'll get picked up in the 2nd round or will end up overseas someplace. He'll be the first case of a fence sitter that might go either way in our recent classes, so should be fun to watch his career.

If you recall, Philpot was part of the 1982 state title team at Apollo HS who knocked off Knott County Central and left the following year which earned him a scholarship to Louisville despite being a start only in his freshman and senior year's at AHS.

Now he's going pro and he'll be an interesting case as a three star recruit who managed to take himself from marginal prospect to possible NBA player.

Jess Barton went 5th overall to the Detroit Pistons. Nelly Philpot, as expected went undrafted. But he was a really solid guy in college. Two-time All-ACC first team at Louisville, so he actually got good. Should be an interesting test case overseas, so I'm following free agency right now to see where he ends up.

Philpot went through the whole 28-day free agency period and didn't manage to get signed. He does have some offers from teams in Argentina, Spain and China, the highest of those is about 60k for the year. Not bad money, but you'd think he could get more shine than that, but he plays point guard and it's a saturated position and he's not an elite guy.

In the end, he gets drafted by the Montreal Jazz of the C-League, taking his chances on playing in Canada in the hopes of landing an NBA deal versus heading overseas just yet.

Looking back at the Top 100 recruits list from the past for college basketball, it's pretty rare over the years for a dude who wasn't ranked in the Top 50 and really in the Top 15 or so, to end up as a real player in the NBA. There are some exceptions, but it's super rare.

What I'd like to do going forward, is use the high school dynasty to mine for those guys who might end up being those guys. We'll still follow our NBA guys as they get there and we'll revisit guys throughout their careers, because we can show them from high school and then how they've done in the pros (with college attached) and show their entire career, basically which could be fun.

But for the next decade or so, I want to see how many of these lower-ranked guys who went acclaimed can end up being real pros. I'll probably entertain myself with a real top prospect or two every 4-7 years too because we haven't seen an elite guy come out of our league yet but those guys are once in a generation anyway. I'd like to see one though and see how he does, where he goes to college and so forth.

I might eliminate the three and done rule for our league too, so guys are leaving at different times too starting this year we'll go back to a one and done rule so guys get a year of college and then see where they end up after that.

Nelly Philpot is in China. He signed another 1 year deal to stay there after going there last year. He bounced around the NBA on a bunch of 10 day contracts where he got no playing time except for one game with the Lakers. After about 14 games in the C-League, he headed to China to finish the year.

FTB or First Tier Basketball is a new pro league based in the US with 16 teams. Their salary cap is $10m per team and the idea is to create a true 2nd tier league in the US for players and fans in cities who'll never get NBA basketball but want to watch other great players play. The league uses a college system with two halves, 5 fouls to foul out and a 35 second shot clock for parity. The playoffs are one and done, too.

Here's the teams:

Spokane
Colorado Springs
El Paso
Fresno
Anchorage
Flint
Omaha
Peoria
Ft. Myers
Myrtle Beach
Little Rock
Syracuse
Dayton
Lehigh Valley
Hartford
Manchester

Okay, so I'm going to end this here and do a sequel dynasty to this one that takes it in a different direction and cleans things up a bit.

What we'll do in the sequel is taking over a college program, we're only going to recruit guys who are 3-star or lower with an exemption to carry a blue chip (4 or 5) guy if we can ever get one at a time...

I'm really curious to see how far a team with mid-level talent can do in the game over a fixed period of time. If I'm feeling ambitious, then we'll go ahead and tinker with coaching strategies, but in general this will be a high level dynasty where I set things up for the year and let it go, besides doing recruiting for the team. I'll only post the season results, maybe the report the game generates with stats and mention how the team did in the post-season if it gets there.

The HS dynasty will continue to give me talent and I'll probably populate the game with more 3-star recruits as a result to keep it interesting for me, but we won't be paying as much attention to the high school game besides taking recruits from there for the time being.

The pro game will also be there and I'll eventually follow careers of guys, but it's possible I run a bunch of college seasons before I go back to the pros again.

I was looking at the pro game and noticed some of the careers of guys who started here came to a close. So I wanted to reflect on them, since well..I like closure. I'll find other guys and list them as I do.
