I wish they still had TIVO's that worked with directv.

Quad tuner? Damn. Pretty awesome, although if I've got 4 things recording at once, I'm concerned .

I was just musing last night that we could use another dual tuner in our family room. It's not only that we have things to tape, but we might also want to watch something that we aren't taping. We usually tape The Middle and Ghosthunters. Both on Wed. 8PM. So was Halloween Wars, which we might want to watch. Then at 9PM is Modern Family. And MythBusters. And Restaurant Impossible. Nevermind throwing in the odd MAD, Regular Show, or Gumball. Thankfully, a number of these shows repeat (hooray 3 hour basic cable repeating blocks).

Oh yeah - and there are also baseball playoffs going on which *I* might want to watch. Or football on Thursdays (have to deal with Chopped, and more recently Community/Parks & Rec). Last week iI might have wanted to watch "the most exciting day of regular season baseball EVAR", but my tuners were already taping things.

amazing how technology marches on.. they're already got a prototype Tivo that can record six or eight shows at the same time. This is obviously a plot by the Government... they'll find out who needs to record 6/8 shows at the same time.. so they can be sterilized for the good of future generations:

Do you really need to sterilize them? That's like loading Ghandi's gun full of blanks.

Now, granted most cases will be gilding the lily, but they might be recording all the American Idol knock offs/spinoffs shows at one time. Or "My super sweet Bridezilla Pregnant at Sixteen.." (ie, the glut of reality shows). Or maybe they want to try to collect the entire history of Skinemax late night soft core porn. In each case, it's better not to take chances. Our future depends on the actions we take today.

Is there anything you can do with an off contract TiVo you don't have a subscription for? I'm switching to DTV and it won't work with that.

I don't think you get access to the guide, so no recording or live browsing. Maybe just Netflix and all that.

If its an hd or newer TiVo, it's a cable box w/o channel identifiers. No Internet video can be accessed.

I have just made the leap to Tivo (Premiere to be exact)!! But not because I didn't like my old Comcast Motorola Box (I did). But rather because cable is just too damned expensive these days. I loved DVR capabilities so much that I was wary of "cutting the cord" (only for cable TV, cable internet I'm going to keep). Then I found out that the Tivo Premiere has DVR for Over the Air programming and I was sold.

So I got an antenna and a Lifetime subscription and things are humming along nicely. I haven't canceled the cable yet (when I complained about the price they gave me a 6 month deal that included HBO, Showtime, etc... so I want to ride that out while watching as much shows on those networks as I can), but I'm glad that Tivo gave me an option to cut the cord, while being able to DVR shows!

The interface is quite nice as well (though not all that much better than the Comcast box).

yes, TiVo is awesome. I've had mine since the series1 days...

currently have series2 and contemplating a premiere but that requires me to get a new tv and deal with TWC to get cable cards, etc.

i had a premiere for 2 years and it was pretty nice. But only 2 tuners and dealing with TWC meant that I needed to give it up and switch to dTV. The 5 tuner thing they have is fuckin sweet.

You need to figure out where this studio is in pittsburgh and go and give that woman something to live for. Other than her screaming at 9 year old girls.

Does anyone have the (unfortunately named) Roamio? Or the Mini?

Mrs. G to chime in...

We just got the Roamio for my parents when their DVD/VHS combo bit the dust(imagine that). It seems to be serving well enough. They don't have satellite and cable won't go out where they are. What are your concerns?

Was more wondering how well the mini works with the Roamio and if the 6 tuner is worth getting.

I have a Roamio. I love it. It's really quick. I have the Basic one because I get my programming Over the Air and I needed a DVR or else I'd be forced to stick with cable... the OTA reception on the Roamio is light years ahead of the Premiere's FWIW.
