Ooh, straight red for Marchisio of Italy. That makes things very interesting.

Playing the doom and gloom for the USA, if we go out on Thursday, it could be argued Ghana had the better tournament anyway.

They would have beaten Portugal where we tied them.

They would have tied Germany where we lose to them.

And they completely outplayed us.

The US can say, "If it wasn't for the last 30 seconds against Portugal..." But Ghana could just as easily say "If it wasn't for the first 30 seconds against the US..."

Picking up on a previous thread of conversation, the Guardian over the winter did a series of articles on the death of grassroots football in England and it could be argued this is a major reason why England aren't as good as you'd think they'd be - kids are just leaving the sport. Some selected articles:

Grassroots football in crisis due to bad weather and poor facilities | Football | The Guardian
Grassroots football in England: abuse, death threats and withering numbers | Andy Hunter | Football | The Guardian
High time the game dealt with crisis in adult grassroots football | Owen Gibson | Football | The Guardian
Grassroots football on Merseyside – in pictures | Football | theguardian.com

Conversely, I would say the opposite is happening in the U.S., where soccer still does "suffer" from talent lost to the bigger sports, but grassroots has been growing consistently for some time now.

Fun Italian fact:

Immobile doesn't mean 'not mobile', it is Italian for 'real estate'.

For the capocannonieri he didn't play particularly well, you're quite right.

Not pretty - I quite agree.

Aside from the win over England Italy haven't really played with any emotion or urgency in of the past two games.

Italy deserves to go out, between nastiness, playacting and just plan negative football.

It would be funny if the referee forgot all the extra time he's probably added for all of Italy's flopping.

And no, I don't think he bit him, but I think he tried to bite him.

Such a shame that one of these teams will move on. After today they both deserve to go home.

I take it back. Let's go 0 minutes of stoppage time.

And I'm certainly not going to defend whatever Suarez did, but let's not ignore Chiellini's backhand/elbow to the face in response.

Yes. Every minute of watching Italy play since I started following things in 1998 has built up an awful lot of dislike and easily trumps Suarez being awful. Go Uruguay.

Crazy to see the exits.

Spain.....out.
England.....out.
Italy.....likely out.
Portugal.....likely out.

Not sure you could have guessed any of those before group play outside of maybe Portugal. Lots of fun to see the Euro teams getting sent home!

So can someone give me a blow by blow? Listening to the match instead of watching and I think ESPN radio is behind you guys by 5-10 minutes. What did Suarez do?

England is hardly a surprise, their first round exit is as expected. Spain and Portugal were/are stuck in the other two tough groups, but I do agree their exits are/will be unexpected.

As an England fan I always thought that we were third favourite in our group. Turns out I was one out!

But honestly we were underdogs to Italy and Uruguay in most peoples eyes until about two or three weeks before the start of the WC, when people forgot their sensible assessments and started getting carried away again

Can't stand Suarez so by association I can't stand Uruguay. I hate Italy with a passion, but I'd rather see them advance.

I'm not surprised England got sent home. There weren't a ton of expectations on them. The others, yeah, a bit surprised. I generally like northern European teams (England, Dutch, Germany, Belgium) and at least most of them a representing well.

I have little faith in FIFA too but if Suarez is allowed to continue to suit up then this is just a complete farce.

He bit Chiellino in his shoulder. Chiellini clearly didn't like it and elbowed Suarez in response. The referee and assistants missed it completely.
