Survivor XXIX

Thought tonight was a very strong premiere. Lots of good characters without overdoing it on the crazy (at least so far). Also pleased with Nadiya going out first, she just rubbed me the wrong way.

I like that at least so far it seems like normal people with shades of gray as opposed to whack jobs and Pollyannas.

Didn't mind the one girl almost popping out of her top going up the wall.

The preview montage at the end looked pretty awesome.

Thought it was a solid episode. I like that there isn't 7-8 alpha males this time around to turn it into a frat house mentality. I like that Dale didnt go, I think he is going to be a solid player. I thought it was stupid of those girls to flat out state they were on the Amazing Race.

I like that gay guy not enjoying just being called one of the girls. He's not Colten, he's like a tough guy that just likes dudes. I can respect that.

Also, obviously the show makes everyone immediately feel for Jeremy. What an incredibly tough spot to be in, but he handled it well, even with the picking of Keith "because he will take care of her." Well done.

Anyway, in my Survivor pool I have Dale (glasses fire starter) and Alec (the younger, seemingly-less dumb surfer bro). Not thrilled about either one of them.

My early pick to win, based on nothing but one show is Jon, the educated linebacker.

heh. I think he may be the one who quits. Wasn't he saying his Dad has cancer or something and doesn't have much time?

I also think Jeremy played that really smart. I looked at my wife and said " he better not pick himself." Glad to see he pays attention to prior seasons and knew how that would be received.

As soon as I saw "The Twinnies" were going to be on the show, my wife and I decided to avoid the season. They ruined one season of The Amazing Race, and almost ruined another except that they went out early. I couldn't take any more of them.

What was she thinking? She wasn't even wearing a top...

She shows up with just her buff wrapped around her big breasts, for a challenge that is pretty sure to be athletic in nature. I'm all for her wearing that around camp.... pretty stupid to wear at a challenge...

i seriously wanted to kill them during the introductions when they were finishing each others sentences and answering in stereo...i cant wait to see the reaction on the fact of the one that is left when them come into next weeks reward challenge and she sees her sister is gone.

I don't think the football player will last long. And like most, I was happy to see one of the sisters go. I can't imagine many gay men like to be treated as the equivalent of a woman.

Just watched the episode last night. I hadn't seen the other Blood and Water (is this structured hte same, with separating them at first?). So far it's been interesting, though I may get tired of hte tearjerker confessionals as the game goes on.

I agree, a good mix. I don't know why guys like professional athletes bother signing up for these things. 0% chance anyone famous or rich gets beyond a few weeks in my opinon. Seems like a waste of your time.

The Louisiana guys drove me bonkers in the intro, but I kind of liked the dad after he went to the island. The son is dumb as bricks though. "I think your name has five letters ... oh wait, no, six." Oh man.

And who wears a Polo shirt to survivor? Might as well write "vote me out" on your back in my opinion, what a doof.

Yeah, I'm glad Josh voted Nadiya, she really nailed her coffin with those comments about him. I think he could be a good player, seems to be able to straddle being a social player without coming off as manipulative.

So are we to assume that was the idol that Dale found? Weird it was just sitting on the well.

I was only partly paying attention, but did I hear this right: John Rocket's big plan to disguise the fact that he's a former MLB closer was to tell people that his last name was Wetteland?

John Wettland was also a closer. I think he wanted to hide the fact he was John Rocker.

I think he didn't want to be associated with baseball at all, and was just saying Wetteland because he was a less famous name. For instance, if you know the name John Wetteland, then you probably don't have any trouble looking at that man and knowing he is John Rocker.

We're still watching, but my goodness, who actually likes these girls to make them appear on their 3rd CBS show?

Right. It was like Joe Montana not wanting to be identified as a former NFL quarterback, and telling people his last name was actually Namath. Way to throw 'em off the scent, John!

I've actually been surprised by Rocker so far. I thought he'd be a complete trainwreck, but he's seemed like a decent player so far. Based on the preview, maybe that changes next week.

Yeah, I liked his comment about losing to a girl - always endearing to the opposite sex.

Val earned her way out of the tribe, and I thought it was a casually ballsy power play by Rocker, calling Val's bluff. If she wasn't lying, he keeps his word and keeps her in the game. She lies, Rocker says fuck it, I gave you a chance, but now you're outta here.

i agree...thought it was really stupid to claim 2 idols so early in the game, especially considering how little time she was on the beach...she basically said to everyone "i am running the show" and forced them to vote for her

I said to my wife, "well he just got himself voted out," when he said that. Way to shoot yourself in the social game early. He's already got knocks on him for his reputation, it seems, and he's an apparent physical threat (though he hasn't performed that way). Alienating half the contestants might not be a good idea.

He definitely seems like a hothead in challenges too, I expect he'll go postal at some point.

There's an interesting sympathy angle that gets played when someone gets voted out. The mother (forget her name) looked ready to adopt Natalie when her sister got voted out. Jeffrey might get some sympathy next week as well.

Julie really kicked ass at that challenge and showed some real focus and patience.

Baylor seems to be left without an ally of any sort, not sure what she'll do next. Already labeled as deceptive this early.

Oh god, I cannot wait for that douchebag guy to get voted out. John? With the hair and the polo shirt. I am so glad he lost that flint, and then basically wasted a challenge for them. What a tool.

Dunno if it'll get touched on in the future but it would have been interesting to see the girl tell her tribe that they only won because Drew threw the competition.

Sometimes, an episode of Survivor is all about misdirection, red herrings and throwing you off the scent of what's going to happen. And sometimes,. every once in a while, it's just "Let's all point and laugh at this gigantic douche bag".

Yeah, I actually 100% expected he was going to tell people he did that. I thought he was that dumb. What an egomaniac, I don't know where they find these guys. He's lucky he got voted out now, because as soon as a merge happened and that came out he'd be gone anyway. I loved that even while on the verge of being voted out he checked out Julie's ass as she walked past him to vote.

I imagine his brother will be a target soon, he's nearly as annoying. However, he may be able to turn it against Baylor as she already has some negatives.

I feel like the last two episodes have been obvious slam dunks, you just knew from the editing who was going, and deservedly so, I suppose. I'm ready for some intrigue, however.

I notice so far Reed on that tribe is sliding by very unnoticed. His boyfriend has been labeled as kind of a leader or decision maker in his tribe, which could backfire, but Reed has been absolutely neutral as far as we know. That should pay off for him.

indeed. Although it's a shame he got voted out before anyone could find out what his "other assets" actually were.

I find it hilarious that he thinks getting voted off validates his belief that the girls were gunning for him. And honestly, he probably still feels that way even after seeing the show - he's that lost.

Maybe under the radar, voting was a hot mess as well. All the girls voted for Drew, no surprise there. But, oddly, Jeremy also voted for Drew instead of Keith. The Keith vote came from Jon while the other two dudes voted for Julie. And, of course, Drew was the only one who voted for Kelley.

I don't understand why they are all so butt hurt about the trailmix. She grabbed it from the merge feast. It isn't like she stole food from the tribe. Any one of them could have done what she did and chose not to. How is it any different than if she ate it at the feast? And to go through her stuff is shitty. Bunch of pussies.

Exactly. All of this moaning is also from people who ate their entire supply of rice within about 14-17 days of the game starting.

I'm not, they would have been stupid to side with the guys. They can still get Jeff out at some point, and Jon can beat the girls if physical challenges.

It would have been nice to go to the end with long hair douchey guy, but Jaquline is right, thinking too long term on Jons part. They now have the numbers and no one has any reason to flip.

We all know things will of course get shaken up, but for now its the right move.

Plus, once those guys went all caveman you knew it was over for them.

Just once, I'd like to see somebody get an immunity idol clue and not find it immediately.

Every single one for the past half dozen seasons has gone something like this:
(Player unwraps clue scroll)
"Hmm... according to this, the idol is somewhere near a tree."
(Camera pans back to show entire island is covered in trees.)
"Well, I guess I could check that tree over there."
(Player takes one step towards tree.)
(Trips over immunity idol.)
"Yay!"

You left out the part where they show the dejected looking player saying they will look one more time, then tripping over the idol.

They are there for 2 days and they show them for maybe 2 minutes. I would think the tripping over the idol happens after hours of looking (off camera).

What's amazing me this season is I have almost never seen anyone gathering any food. They're all starving, but apparently there's nothing to eat there but snails and occasionally a crab? Isn't there any fruit? Most seasons people seem to be spending 80% of their time collecting food, but these guys are all laying around bitching.

Am I just being antsy in waiting for a big move or are people really not doing much of anything. I'd have thought Keith would be eager to make a move on the people who wrote his name down before the tribes merged but he's done nothing. Then I don't really understand why the gay guys would be first on the radar this past week when Wes and the other young dickhead would seem like better choices to get out first.

I'm pretty much down to only rooting for Jeremy, but his alliance makes it so hard to enjoy.
