Apple hit a $700 billion market cap today

Apple hit a market cap value of $700 billion today. No. 2 is Exon Mobil, which is around $405 billion.

Will Apple hit a trillion dollars in market value?

It would probably cost a lot more.

When Steve Jobs returned to Apple back in December of 1996, Apple had a market cap of $3 billion.

If they continue to be a well-operated business, it seems like inflation would take care of that over time. In the short term, I'd guess there's enough demand for Apple stock that if they split the stock, they could get to $1 trillion easily enough as the new, cheaper share price would get bid back up.

Dunno if a $1 trillion market cap is sustainable, though.

I'd just like them to stop screwing up iTunes with their updates.

They just did a 7 for 1 split this year so I can't see them splitting it again and certainly the $119 share price isn't high enough to scare off investors. Actually to be honest I think the company is undervalued - its P/E is only 18.45 which is not that expensive.

Supply problems on the higher capacity iPhones are killing even more profits.

Depends on how quickly it grows post-split (already up 32% since the split) and what sweet spot Apple wants to keep the price at.

That said, I'd like to change my answer. Apple shares need to rise by ~$51/share to hit a $1 trillion market cap. Again, I don't think that's going to happen overnight, but if Apple keeps performing well, $170/share doesn't sound unreasonable if they were trading in the $700 range pre-split.

My wife just paid over $300 for an iPhone 6 on contract last night so that should bump the stock up a couple more cents.
