WaWa vs. Sheetz?
If you were starting a convenience store chain today which would you choose?

We only know Wawa in Tampa and only for the last year or so. Great gas station!

Bug difference of opinion in what Wawa is between those in this area and the rest of the country. To us Wawa is a convenience store with great made to order food that happens to now sell gas as well (and usually at a better price than gas stations). I don't think I will ever call Wawa a gas station (even as the original stores are being replaced with the 'super Wawas' that have gas pumps). To those in the area the phrase "I'm making a Wawa run" doesn't create a picture of getting gas. That would be "making a Wawa run and filling up while I'm there" |

Fair enough, I use it primarily for its coffee, sandwich shop, and convenient store. So I get where you are coming from. But unlike 7/11, where not all stores have gas, the Wawa's here all come with 24+ pumps, hard to see it as anything else when first being introduced to them.

No worries. In a couple generations it will most likely be seen as a gas station here as well, one with a good convenience store attached to it (as any new one opening has gas). All this talk of Wawa has me wanting a turkey bowl for lunch today. |

These places are two gas stations that sell food to red necks. Even the notion of buying coffee there is revolting and repellent.
Since I don't drive a truck with a Confederate flag on it, I don't think they would allow me inside at all.

Yeah, I've seen them on trips down to South Carolina. Never stopped at one tho.
Also I have good memories from youth of stopping at Wawa to buy subs when we were going to Wildwood as a family. |

Unless WaWa or Sheetz is some kind of code for QuikTrip (aka QT), then neither.

...................... That said, I have more experience with Sheetz, as we didn't have a Wawa in the thicke of Confederate country (Harrisburg, PA), I know those down in Dixie (Philadelphia) had it, and swear by it. Back in the day, though...Sheetz's MTOs were the best. Now? I'm too far removed, whistling Dixie in New England, to have any real say. What is the Dixie tune, by the way? |

To be fair, I think there's a different culture in NJ where you can't pump your own gas, (WTF kind of stupid law is that anyways), or in places where you don't pump your own gas typically that make these somewhat more "cultural institutions" than they are elsewhere. |

Okay, but most of the Wawa's didn't have gas until about 2000. They weren't gas stations, they were a better version of 7-11.

Hey - I'm trying to throw the Jersey-folks a bone here to excuse the fact they're getting excited over a convenience store. Work with me. |

I actually prefer Country Fair, Get Go and Speedway to Sheetz in terms of Subs. I just go to Sheetz a lot cause I can see one from my house.

Must be a native Jersey thing. I have lived in Jersey for 10+ years but grew up in Georgia. I really don't view Wawa as anything but another gas station that tends to be well lit and doesn't have overtly shady looking attendants.

Well, a Philly thing that spread into Jersey at least. Starting to see them in my neck of the woods finally (there was one near Hopkins back in the 90s, in a tiny store below a row house; lent the name to the neighboring frat before it became just the "University Mini-Mart"). And one even popped up near the in-laws in Florida, so they are definitely spreading.

When I moved from Kansas to Richmond, I was disappointed that WaWa was their equivalent to QT as I was expecting more. That said, nothing really compares to the flagship Buc-ee's stores, tho. I mean, geez: they have whole counters for deli, warm sandwiches, fudge, jerky, and more. And then there's the aisles of snacky food, bathrooms with actual walls between each stall, or that they're practically the size of a supermarket. All that adds up to Texas-size insanity but a great stop if you're on the road between any of the major Texas cities (actually, I don't think there's an Austin-Dallas one yet). SI

Needed to make a quick run to Jersey yesterday and you can be sure as hell I picked up a couple Wawa subs to bring back. I would never take them over something from a real deli (would cost twice as much of course) but they are miles better than anything from Subway, Quiznos, etc so to say it's convenience store/gas station food is crazy. Not only is the quality much better, but you actually get a good amount of meat compared to those chains and the preparation is so much better and much more consistent.

Do a large number of people really give a shit what convenience store they stop at? I always figured it's "what's closest", and possibly, if 2+ are close, "what's cleanest."
I've never once thought of a convenience store as anything other than a place to buy smokes or grab an emergency caffeine fix. |

Along these lines, I was going to question why people offer their opinions on stuff like this when they haven't had an opportunity to try one of the options. But then I saw that Wawa is winning 20-1 and decided this poll is perfectly valid. |

It's a family name fwiw. Sheetz was gas, they used to have nachos and good subs when I was a kid. Now it's mediocre subs and a second rate Starbucks. I've wanted to check out Wawa for forever but I live in a Sheetz area so I doubt they come in. Also Sheetz was in that Morgan Spurlock movie about branding. |

I think in this case it's not a stop as much as it is a destination. Like, you could be at home and go out to WaWa for a coffee and doughnuts or to buy a couple of hoagies. ETA: WaWa is really a "food market" that later added gas rather than a gas station that added food. The chain dates back to 1964, but the first "fuel store" didn't open until 1996.

In this area at least (Central NJ, Central PA), the WaWas are more like mini supermarkets. Clean, spacious, good selection & quality. They don't feel anything like the usual mini mart type of place.

If these people were shown what was in Luling or Madisonville, their jaw would drop but it's hard to imagine if you've never seen SI
