Reporting from the Georgia Dome, an Atlanta Falcons Dynasty Thread

Game: Madden NFL 15 (Xbox One)
Difficulty: Armor & Sword's/Marino's All-Pro Slow Simulation Style Sliders
Roster: Default Connected Franchise Roster
Rules: Preseason games will be simmed... I'm allowed only one major roster move (sign or trade) during the preseason and one during the regular season, and if that move is to be made during the regular season, I must do it on the 8th week (the week of the trade deadline)... I'll allow myself to use the XP I acquire throughout the season to develop my coach and players in the offseason or preseason only... During the season, I am only allowed to use the game prep mode to install the gameplans and boost my players' confidence so that I can't simply use the in-game skill challenges to develop a certain player exponentially.

2014 Preview

"We're gonna need more than just Home Depot to fix this one, Mr. Blank." - An anonymous fan shortly after a disappointing season in 2013

After a season in which he saw his team go 4-12, Arthur Blank made sure that he saw to it that his coaches did every thing they could to right the wrongs of such a disappointing season. Head coach Mike Smith called that season an "anomaly" while general manager Thomas Dimitroff believes that his team could turn it around 180-degrees this season. Joining the front office this offseason was former Patriots and Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who has already shown his influence on his best friend as Dimitroff and the Falcons signed two big free agents, Paul Soliai and Tyson Jackson, who previously played for Kansas City. The Falcons were also the team highlighted in this season's "HBO Hard Knocks" series in which the main theme portrayed was that of toughness. We'll see exactly how tough this team is after replacing their offensive and defensive line coaches with Mike Tice and Bryan Cox, respectively.

Falcons Ink CB Brandon Flowers to a 1-yr, $2.2M deal

The Falcons have inked 26-year-old cornerback Brandon Flowers to a one-year deal just days after the Chiefs released him. Flowers will join a young core of defensive backs which already boasted a solid group that included Desmond Trufant, Robert Alford, William Moore, and 2014 third round draft pick Dezmen Southward.

I typed out a pretty good preseason wrap up report but when I hit submit, the system logged me out and I couldn't go back to see what I wrote...

2014 - Week 1 Wrap Up

The NFC South rival Saints came to town to kick off the 2014 season. The Falcons played superb on all levels of the game as they held Drew Brees to just one touchdown and forcing him to throw for an interception. The Falcons were able to get to Brees and was able to sack him for a whopping 5 times (2 from Umenyiora and 1 from each of Kroy Biermann, Keman Ishmael, and Paul Soliai). The catalyst on offense was Steven Jackson, who rushed for 2 touchdowns and looked to be the old Steven Jackson that had consistently rushed for 2,000 yards year in and year out in St. Louis.

2014 - Week 2 Wrap Up

The Falcons went on the road for their first road game of the season vs. the 1-0 Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. The story leading up to the game was that of two of the premiere receivers in the league going head to head against one another in A.J. Green vs. Julio Jones. The Falcons defense was underwhelming, to say the least. They allowed Andy Dalton to throw for 300 yards on 28-for-38 passing and giving up a total of 473 yards on defense. On offense, the Falcons fared well, but Matt Ryan had difficulty connecting with his receivers early on and looked flustered from the pressure that the Bengals were putting on him. Ryan went on to threw 2 interceptions in the 4th quarter, essentially sealing the loss for the Falcons, which is their first of the season.

2014 - Week 3 Wrap Up

The Falcons headed home after a disappointing loss against the Bengals last week to face off against NFC South rival Tampa Bay on Thursday night. The home team put on a show as they were able to best their rivals 31-13 on a game that was nationally televised. Mike Smith stated that he was still not satisfied with the defense's overall performance, which allowed Mike Glennon to throw for over 315 yards, but he was pleased to see that his defense bent but did not break this time around.

2014 - Week 4 Wrap Up

The Falcons were finally able to get their first road win of the season against the league-leading rusher Adrian Peterson and the Minnesota Vikings. The game was a tight one as the Falcons took control early and fast, thanks to the power running of Steven Jackson, but were not able to hold off the Vikings' offensive onslaught in the second quarter. The Falcons, however, were able to hold on just long enough for "Matty Ice" to add yet another 4th quarter comeback to his resume.

2015 - Week 5 Wrap Up

Eli Manning and the 3rd ranked offense in the league hosted the soaring Falcons this past Sunday and suffered their third loss of the season. The Falcons pass rush was just too much for Eli and crew in as they were in full force and were able to get to Eli Manning 6 times. The Falcons now rank second in the league in sacks with 17, and their leading pass rusher in Umenyiora is ranked second amongst the league leaders racking up 7 sacks so far this season.

2015 - Week 6 Wrap Up

Atlanta's winning streak is now at four games as Matt Ryan and Julio Jones were able to connect 3 times for a touchdown. The Falcons offense was slow to start as the Bears were able to force them to punt it after three straight possessions. In the middle of the second quarter, Jay Cutler was sacked by Jonathan Babineaux and missed the rest of the game. Cutler's backup, David Fales, had a solid night looking very accurate but held on to the ball a little too much. The Falcons were able to get to him eleven times today. Osi Umenyiora had 4 sacks, leading the team in that category. Atlanta looks to continue this streak alive as they sit atop the division with a 5-1 record.

(Sorry, I wasn't able to get the box score!)

2015 - Week 7 Wrap Up

League leading rusher Steven Jackson and the Falcons traveled to Baltimore this week to face off against the 1-5 Ravens. What many believed to be an automatic win for the hot team of Atlanta became an embarrassing loss for the now 5-2 team. The defense allowed 472 total yards, over 400 of which, came from the hand of Joe Flacco. Matt Ryan continues to look inconsistent throughout the season and many are curious as to what has happened to him this season. One can point out that he is consistently under fire with a shaky offensive line but his accuracy has just been disappointing this season. The only bright spot this week is one that is bright every week -- the pass rush. The Falcons were able to get to Flacco eight times in their loss.

2014 - Week 8 / Trade Deadline Wrap Up

TRADE ALERT!: Shortly before the team left for their game against the Detroit Lions in London, the Atlanta Falcons announced a blockbuster deal that will have Jadeveon Clowney coming to Atlanta in exchange for Rashede Hageman, Corey Peters, a 1st round pick in the year 2016, and a 2nd round pick in next year's draft. Sources in Houston say that the front office and coaching staff were not pleased with Clowney and had deemed him a "locker room cancer". The 1st overall pick of the 2014 draft has 23 tackles, 6 of them for a loss, and 5 of those sacks. The Falcons plan on moving Clowney to the right defensive end position in their hybrid defense, allowing league leading sack artist Umenyiora to continue playing in the same position that he has been all season. This move allows Babineaux to stay fresh and healthy towards the later parts of the season--something he has struggled with in the past. Nose tackle Louis Nix III was a 3rd round selection by the Texans and has not played in any games yet this season.

Clowney and Nix III were able to make it to the last plane going out of London, but the new acquisitions were not able to stop the Lions from making a huge 4th quarter comeback against the Falcons. Clowney was able to flash his dominance from the right defensive end position, sacking the quarterback 3 times and making one tackle for a loss. But the rest of the defense was lackluster, especially in the coverage. This loss puts the Falcons at 5-3 with one of the worst passing defenses in the league.

To wrap up the week of the trade deadline, Atlanta acquired OLB Dekoda Watson from the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for CB Javier Arenas. The underutilized cornerback was sent for yet another young pass rusher for this team to develop. With the aging Umenyiora and the underperforming Biermann, this move made a lot of sense for the Falcons. Watson now joins Clowney in what the Falcons are hoping will become one of the best pass rushing crews in the league for many years to come.

2014 - Week 10 Wrap Up

The Falcons traveled to Tampa to face off against their division rival Buccaneers, who are just 1 game behind them in their division. Mike Smith emphasized toughness this offseason, and the Falcons looked every bit of that this week. The player of the game was Jadeveon Clowney, who absolutely dominated the Bucs' linemen and looked unstoppable. He finished the game with 11 tackles, 5 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. The Falcons are now alone on top of the division sitting with a 6-3 record.
