Mississippi St. hires Croom as coach

Memphis news stations reporting that Sylvester Croom will be hired as the coach at MSU. He will be the first African-American coach in the history of the SEC.

More as it becomes avaliable...

WOW, I heard they were looking at him and Doug Williams but never thought they would hire either of them. This is groundbreaking in so many ways if it is true.

Alabama should have hired him. I think he'll be a good coach.

Agreed. I hope he destroys Alabama everytime he plays them.

Yeah but you are talking about the SEC. On a scale of 1-10 Notre Dame hiring Willingham was a 5 and this is an 11. Never thought I would see it while I was alive.

Wasn't the OC (I forget his name... Jimbo-something at LSU being looked at too? Did he decide not to apply?

Ah, yes. I was kinda hoping Williams would get the job over Croom. Williams has head coach experience and probably knows the South a little bit more than Croom does. I am perosnallt not a fan of Miss. ST, but I do follow them. Also, if Williams would have got the job then the high school coach at my high school alma matter would have got a job on the coaching staff. I would have liked for him to leave, he is an idiot.

I have always loosely followed Mississippi State. Croom should be an interesting choice, I haven't lived in the Starksville, MS area since I was 12 years old, but if things haven't changed, it's going to be an interesting relationship between Croom and the Good Ole Boys. Hopefully he is highly successful and wins over the minds of the old folks down there.

As for Doug Williams, he's a coach at Grambling. Having been in Shreveport now for a couple of months, I have watched a few Grambling games. The difference between Grambling and Mississippi State is night and day. Mississippi State, even at 2-10 would blow Grambling away as far as the level of talent on the football field.

Well, on paper anyway.

And Doug Williams is about as articulate as a drunken sailor. He's not the guy that should be breaking ground in the SEC.

Croom was an assitant for the Lions a couple years back and was mentioned as a possibility for head coach. Would have been better than Morninweg thats for sure. Good luck to him.
