John Lennon - Jealous guy

The Beatles - A Day in the Life

Not sure it really counts if it's the same guy after he's left a band (unless you're John Fogerty), but by brain kept wanting to start parts of A Day in the Life while listening to Lennon's song.

Stumbled across this on YouTube today:

Thundermother - "Boogie Music" {1971} - YouTube

Thought damn, this sounds like something else...what was that song with "come on, come on...". Oh right!

Ted Nugent - Stranglehold - YouTube

Of course, the first couple of times I heard Stranglehold I got to the middle part (5:00 on?) and thought "well shoot - this is Bullet the Blue Sky."

U2: Bullet the Blue Sky - YouTube

Nah, this kind of points out the double standard of interpolating versus sampling a song.

When you hear a song like

its intention is obviously not to cash in on the popularity of Peace and Love Moviment IV by Mandrill:

yet Kanye West arranged a deal with the artist for the sample, no matter how obscure it was. Contrast that with Robin Thicke and Pharrell obviously trying to make a song that was very conscientiously a throwback to the 70s-80s which happened to sound very much like a song one of the most popular artists from the 70s and 80s already did.

So, Quik - you think we can sue Billy Joel on behalf of The Tymes (or any other doo wop group)?

I'm sure Billy was just paying tribute, not looking to make money or anything.

Heck, Reunion should sue Billy, too.

Life Is A Rock - Reunion - 1974 - YouTube

Billy Joel - We Didn't Start the Fire (Official Video) - YouTube

Necro bump, just because it came across my playlist:

Santana Evil Ways sounds like Steely Dan Do It Again.

Also, parts of Evil Ways sounds like Love Potion No. 9.

That is all.

Australian Crawl - "Unpublished Critics" [1981 track with lyrics] - YouTube

Apparently they're supposed to be similar. I don't know... I'm not hearing it.

There's a lot of similar transitions, etc. I see the similarities but it'd be hard to say it was an intentional copy.

Heard this for the first time today:

The Young Holt Trio-Wack wack - YouTube

Overall different, but there's a pretty big element in common with this:

The capitols - Cool Jerk - YouTube

So I doubt this was intentional, but I was watching Ellen the other day and her design show had a contestant that got disqualified because he allegedly inadvertently ripped off an existing piece of furniture.

Anyways his walk out music was "Blurred Lines". Either an amazing coincidence or meta level trolling

It's similar songs like these that make me shake my head at issues like the Gaye/Thicke lawsuit. Inspiration/riffing/tweaking doesn't really copy an idea... and how crazy is it to give one particular artist/group sole rights to a melody, anyway?

That said, great songs--I love Rundgren's version of the Cool Jerk in 7/4 (extra jerk!).

I would say ROCK In the USA by Mellencamp sounds a bit like On The Dark Side.
