Network Help

I have a problem with a Network I'm trying to fix. The computer is running Win98 and I can't figure something out. I think I've nailed the problem, I just can't find the solution.

Under Network in the Control Panel, I see three things listed:

Client for Microsoft Networks
(Name of the Wireless PCI Adapter) (Can't remeber name off top of my head)
TCP/IP

Now, in every help thing I've found online, it showed:

TCP/IP -> (Name of Adapter)

Except on the computer I working on, it just says TCP/IP.

My question is, how do I get the TCP/IP to point to the Adapter in Win98?

try removing it, then restarting your comp so it automatically has to reinstall it.

i think i had similar probs long time ago and i THINK thats how i fixed it...

I think I tried that before, but I'll try again.

I've seen some cases where it didn't list it like that for some reason. If you go Start>Run and type winipcfg, is your Wireless adapter listed in the adapter list? Does it have an IP?

Chubby, didn't work.

Sloan, yes, it is listed and it is giving me an IP.

The utility that came with the wireless network card runs and the computer is connected to the router, which in turn is connected to the internet. The utility and winipcfg are bother giving me the same IP address.

But none of the programs (Internet Explorer, Real Player, AIM, etc.) can connect to the internet.

dola,

I did try to remove the card, uninstall the drivers and reinstall everything. That (obviously) did not fix it.

I haven't installed too many wirelss cards in 98, but in XP and 2000 I know the wireless cards will get IPs from routers that aren't secured without "connecting" to the network. I usually have to go into the wireless software to view available networks and select "connect to network"

Can you ping your router or other PCs? Can you ping something like google? (216.239. 39.99)

Do you have any firewall or security software that could be interfering?

No firewall or anything on this computer to interfere.

Yes, I can ping google and the router. 4 sent, 4 received everytime.

Hmm, if you can ping google and surf there by using the IP instead of google.com then something with the DNS is not working correctly. In most cases the gateway and DNS in winipcfg should be the IP of the router. Is this the case?

The gateway is, the DNS is not.

dola,

I can not surf at all, using either www.google.com or the IP address. IE will not connect. I can use the DOS command "ping" to ping the site, but not surf there.

double dola,

The thing is, the DNS on my computer is not the IP of the router either, but I'm using the internet just fine. The DNS numbers for the other computer are the same as mine.

EDIT: FWIW, the DHCP is the same as the router...

Well, first I would try manually entering IP, gateway, and DNS in the IP properties. If that doesn't fix it then you can try some of the fixes suggested here: http://www.tek-tips.com/gviewthread....581/qid/177979

The above is a long thread, but some of the people say that the registry tweaks towards the end work.

dola-
I don't know if you're using a linksys card or not, but here is their suggestion which should work with any card.

Windows 98SE/ME

a.Click on the Start button and click on the Run option.

b.After the "Run" window opens, input control into the "Open" field.

c.After the "Control Panel" opens, double click on the Network icon.

d.After the "Network" window opens, click on the TCP/IP for Wireless-B USB Network Adapter, and click on the Properties button.

e.When the "TCP/IP Properties" window opens, click on the DNS Configuration tab.

f.When the "DNS Configuration" area loads, click on the Enable option.

g.Input computer123 into the "Host Name" Field.

h.Input 206.13.29.12 into the "DNS Server Search Order" field, then click the Add button.

i.Input 206.13.30.12 into the "DNS Server Search Order" field, then click the Add button.

j.Click the OK button on the "TCP/IP Properties" window. Click the OK button on the "Network" window. You will be prompted to restart your computer, click on the Yes button.

Sloan, yes I'm using Linksys.

The problem is, I think, look at step d. It says to click on "TCP/IP for Wireless-B Network Adapter". But mine doesn't say that. It just says TCP/IP which makes me wonder if Windows is using the network card to access the internet or not. SO far only the utility and DOS commands have been able to.

But I will try that and see if it works.

Well, that did something. Now it takes about 3 times as long to search for the site before telling me it can't find it.

FINALLY!

Thanks for the link Sloan, one of the posts there gave a solution to the problem. It was the registry. Thanks, I can stop growing gray hair for now.
