DICE Baseball 2008 Tournament- Championship Bracket
We have now come to the 16 team championship bracket, which will be played in rounds. I will go over the format and the rules briefly.
Format 1st round and Quarterfinals- Best of 5 Semifinals and Championship Series- Best of 7 Home Field advantage goes to higher seed. In first 2 series, it will be 2-2-1. Last 2 series will be 2-3-2. Rules I am using the same rules I did for the consolation bracket: 1. Every player must get credit for playing in a game. Credit is given when a player completes 4 innings on defense and gets 1 official at-bat. If his first AB is a walk, HBP, or something of that nature, he must bat again to get credit for playing in the game. DH is a little different, since they aren't in the field, once they get an official AB, they get credit for 1/2 game played, which basically means they must either DH 2 games, or DH 1 game and play in the field 1 game. Maybe not the most fair, but it's how I had been doing it all along. 2. No player may start more than 3 games in a row. Once a player has started 3 games in a row, he may come off the bench as a PH or PR, or late inning defensive replacement, but that is it. 3. Pitching rotations will stay the same, and if possible, I will be moving some guys from the rotation to the bullpen to get them some extra appearances. I have been trying to keep appearances even among the bullpen players. If anybody has any questions or comments about these rules, feel free to let me know. I do have a question for you guys... since the championship bracket will be played in rounds, should rule #1 apply to every single round? For instance a guy has to get credit for playing 1 game in every single round? Or just 1 game for the whole championship bracket? I've been going back and forth on this. Writing Format Before every round, I will do a short preview of each series, like I was doing with the consolation bracket before I decided to speed through it. I will not report on a series until it is over, but instead I will play a game from each series then give the game scores. For instance, I have played 7 of the 8 game 1s so far. Once I play the first game of the final first round series, I will post the scores for all the game 1s, then do the same for the game 2s. Once a series is complete, I will do a series recap. This means they may not necessarily be in order. For instance, if a series at the bottom of the bracket is over before the 1/16 series is, I will still report on it. If it gets too confusing, I will just wait and do series reports in order. I hope nobody is too confused already! Again, any questions or comments, feel free to let me know. |

It's time to do some First Round previews, as all 8 of the Game 1's have been completed.
(16) Texas vs. (1) Boston Texas finished in 4th place in Pool C, going 6-4 with a run differential of 19. They were they only 4th place team to finish 6-4, but dropped all the way to 4th thanks to tiebreakers, still good enough to earn the wildcard. They lost a chance to win the pool by losing their last 2 games. Boston won Pool D with an 8-2 record, and a run differential of +16. If the Rangers are going to have any chance in this series, they are going to have to shut down the potent Boston offense, which averaged 5.6 runs a game. This doesn't bode well especially since Rangers pitching gave up an average of 5.8 runs a game. (9) Minnesota vs. (8) Baltimore Minnesota finished in 2nd place in Pool A with a 6-4 record and a +1 run differential. They lost the tiebreaker with Washington on point differential, but they are a team on the slide, losing their last 4 games in pool play after starting 6-0. Baltimore finished 2nd in Pool E with a 6-4 record and a +5 run differential. The Orioles are doing the complete opposite, as they won their last 4 games in pool play to get to this point. Will Baltimore stay hot and Minnesota stay cold? Or will the roles reverse in this first round series. (12) San Francisco vs. (5) Washington San Francisco finished 3rd in Pool D with a 6-4 record and a -1 run differential, winners of their last 3. Pitching was a strong point for the Giants in pool play, as they only had 2 games where they allowed 5 or more runs. Washington won Pool A with a 6-4 record and a +4 run differential. They won the pool thanks to a run differential tiebreaker. They have won 5 in a row after going 1-4 in the first half of pool play and might be the hottest team going right now. (13) Los Angeles Angels vs. (4) Toronto The Angels finished in 3rd place in Pool A with a +8 run differential, and if it weren't for winning a run differential tiebreaker with Cincinnati, the Angels, who came into this tournament as the highest ranked team, would have been in the consolation bracket. They've lost 5 of their last 6 and a 2-1 win over Minnesota in their last game of pool play is why they are here. Toronto won a wild Pool B with a 6-4 record and a -2 run differential. This was a pool that nobody wanted, evidence by the 4 way tie for 2nd place. This is 1 of a couple first round series in which it really wouldn't be an upset if the lower seeded team won the series. (11) Colorado vs. (6) Cleveland Colorado finished 3rd place in Pool C with a 6-4 record and a -9 run differential. They lost out on the 3 way tiebreaker for 2nd, but won the tiebreaker for 3rd thanks to beating Texas both times. Pitching will be a factor for the Rockies who are not exactly known for having quality arms, that is evidence by the 5.8 runs a game they gave up. Cleveland finished 2nd in Pool D with a 7-3 record and a +9 run differential. They handed Boston 1 of their 2 losses, but missed a chance to win the pool by losing their last 2 games in pool play. In those 2 games they gave up 8.5 runs a game, so this series could be a slugfest. (14) Detroit vs. (3) Philadelphia Detroit finished 3rd in Pool B with a 5-5 record and a +5 run differential. They were part of the 4 team tiebreaker for 2nd and 3 team tiebreaker for 3rd, which I don't even remember how all that went down. The Tigers lost their last 2 games in pool play, giving up an average of 9.5 runs in those 2 games. Philadelphia won.. no let me rephrase that.. backed into the Pool E title with a 6-4 record and a +18 run differential. They can thank their 6-1 start in pool play, because they lost their last 3 and won the title thanks to the run differential tiebreaker. Had some of the other teams in this pool fared better, the Phillies might be on the outside looking in. So we've got 2 teams with losing streaks, 1 of those will continue in game 1 and the other will be broken. (10) Seattle vs. (7) New York Yankees Seattle finished 2nd in Pool B with a 5-5 record and a -10 run differential, somehow winning the 4 way tiebreaker for 2nd. I don't even remember how they did it. They are just happy to still be playing though, as in reality, they had one of the worst records in baseball in the 2008 season. Winning 3 of their last 4 is the reason they are here instead of playing in the consolation bracket. The Yankees finished 2nd in Pool C with a 6-4 record and a +20 run differential. They won the 3 team tiebreaker for 2nd, I think due to run differential, not sure. Their +20 run differential was the best of all teams, and I'll be shocked if they don't win this series in 3 or 4 games, although Seattle has been battling all tournament to stay in the mix. (15) Los Angeles Dodgers vs. (2) St. Louis The Dodgers finished 3rd in pool E with a 5-5 record and a -1 run differential, winning a tiebreaker with Milwaukee based on the fact that they beat the Brewers in both games in pool play. They were just 1-4 at the halfway point of Pool E, as they were predicted to be Philadelphia's toughest competition in this pool. Fortunately they did enough to play in the championship bracket. St. Louis won Pool C with a 7-3 record and a +13 run differential, including beating the Bronx Bombers twice. In reality, 2008 wasn't the Cardinals' best season, so this is the 2nd first round series that wouldn't be an upset if the lower seeded team won. So there you have it, first round previews are in. Anybody have any predictions they'd like to throw out there? |

Our first series is complete, and let's take a look at it.
(16) Texas vs. (1) Boston Game 1 Boston- 8, Texas- 5 Code:
After the Rangers scored the first 4 runs, Boston would proceed to score the next 8 before Texas got a meaningless run in the 9th. Julio Lugo had the hot bat for Boston, going 3-4 with 4 RBI's. Travis Metcalf was 2-4 with a double, a homer, and 3 RBI's for Texas. WP: Tim Wakefield LP: Scott Feldman Game 2 Boston- 7, Texas- 4 Code:
The Red Sox again spotted Texas an early lead before getting the bats going, as they batted around in the 4th inning and got 2 doubles and 3 singles in the inning. 8 of the 9 Boston starters recorded hits, with J.D. Drew being the only one not to hit safely, but he did have 2 walks. WP: Bartolo Colon LP: Matt Harrison SV: David Aardsma Game 3 Boston- 5, Texas- 3 Code:
Texas squandered a chance to keep the series alive, down 4-2 going into the bottom of the 7th, they got runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, but Javier Lopez came out of the pen to allow just 1 of the runs to score. Jeff Bailey added an insurance run in the 8th, and Justin Masterson and Hideki Okajima each pitched a shutout inning as the Red Sox sweep this 1st round series 3 games to 0. WP: Paul Byrd LP: Brandon McCarthy SV: Hideki Okajima Boston advances to the quarterfinals and will take on the winner of the series between Baltimore and Minnesota. |

Our second series of the First Round is complete, and it is the New York Yankees/Seattle series. Here's a recap
Game 1 Code:
The teams combined for 28 hits and the Yankees broke open a close game with 5 runs in their last 2 at-bats. Hideki Matsui was 3-4 with 3 RBIs in the win, while Bryan LaHair was 2-5 with an RBI for the Mariners. WP: Darrell Rasner LP: Ryan Feierabend Game 2 Code:
The Yankees lost 2 players to injury this game, as starting pitcher Ian Kennedy left in the 3rd inning, and Derek Jeter left in the 5th. Joba Chamberlain came on in relief for Kennedy and pitched a brilliant 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball, giving up just 4 hits while he was in. The Yankees this time got their runs in the middle innings, as Cody Random and Hideki Matsui had 3 RBIs a piece, and Jose Vidro was 1-2 with a walk and a sacrifice and a double for the Mariners in a losing effort. WP: Joba Chamberlain LP: Felix Hernandez Game 3 Code:
Another excellent effort from a long reliever/spot starter for the Yankees, as Carl Pavano left after 4 innings due to short stamina, and Dan Giese finished it off for the Yankees, going the next 5 innings as all Seattle could muster was a 2nd inning homer. The Yankees had 4 hits in the 8th inning, which put the game and the series away for the Bronx Bombers. Seattle, in an effort to stay alive, used 5 pinch hitters in the 9th inning! Keep in mind the rule that everybody has to play a game in each series, so the Mariners had some key players on the bench to start this one. WP: Dan Giese LP: R.A. Dickey So the Yankees are the 2nd team to sweep their First Round series (Boston was the other, go figure), and will take on the LA Dodgers/St. Louis winner in the Quarterfinals. |

Another First Round series is complete, this one being the Colorado/Cleveland series. Here's a recap.
Game 1 Colorado- 000 000 000 0 9 0 Cleveland- 000 002 00X 2 5 0 Colorado outhit the Indians in this one, but couldn't get anything across, as Cleveland starter Anthony Reyes went 8 innings. Ryan Garko accounted for all the scoring with a 2 RBI double in the 6th. WP: Anthony Reyes LP: Jorge de la Rosa SV: Jensen Lewis Game 2 Colorado- 011 000 000 2 8 0 Cleveland- 200 000 30X 5 13 0 Cleveland used 4 singles and 2 walks in the 7th inning to break the tie, and both teams used 4 pitchers in this one. Lots of hits, but still not a lot of scoring. WP: Juan Rincon LP: Manuel Corpas SV: Tom Mastny Game 3 Cleveland- 000 000 120 3 9 1 Colorado- 010 211 01X 6 10 0 Colorado kept the series alive with 4 runs in the middle innings, and actually led 6-0 before Cleveland got 3 runs late. Colorado lives to play another game however. WP: Franklin Morales LP: Aaron Laffey SV: Brian Fuentes Game 4 Cleveland- 220 012 000 7 9 3 Colorado- 000 003 002 5 8 0 3 errors almost came back to haunt Cleveland in this one, as they saw their 7-0 lead evaporate quickly, but it took Rafael Perez only 1 batter to shut the door, as he records one of those 1 batter saves, and the Indians move on to the Quarterfinals. WP: Jeremy Sowers LP: Livan Hernandez SV: Rafael Perez The Indians will now face the winner of the Detroit/Philadelphia series in the Quarterfinals. |

We've got 1 series that has been completed, the Washington-Toronto series. Let's get a short recap.
Game 1 Washington @ Toronto Toronto- 7, Washington- 2 Jose Bautista had a monster game for the Blue Jays, going 5-5 with a double, a homer, and 4 RBI's, and A.J. Burnett went 7 innings as the Blue Jays took an early lead in Quarterfinal series #2. Code:
Game 2 Washington @ Toronto Toronto- 2, Washington- 1 This was a well played pitching duel, with Joe Inglett getting the game winning run in the bottom of the 5th on an RBI double, as the Blue Jays take control of the series. Code:
Game 3 Toronto @ Washington Toronto- 2, Washington- 1 Another well played game, this one decided again in the 5th inning on a bases loaded walk to Brad Wilkerson. Shawn Marcum threw a complete game 4 hitter for the Blue Jays in a game that shouldn't have even been close as Toronto rapped out 14 hits, but left a lot of men on base. Nevertheless, the Blue Jays sweep the series and move on to the Semifinals. Code:

Quarterfinal Series #4 is done, between the Dodgers and Yankees. Let's take a look at how that one unfolded.
Game 1 Los Angeles Dodgers @ New York Yankees Dodgers- 7, Yankees- 6 Los Angeles took advantage of a 5 run 3rd inning, chasing Yankee starter Phil Hughes after just 2 1/3 innings. The big blow was a 3 RBI double by Blake Dewitt. The Yankees hung tough though, getting it to within 7-6 going into the 9th, but Takashi Saito nailed it down to give the Dodgers an early 1 game lead. Code:
Game 2 Los Angeles Dodgers (1-0) @ New York Yankees (0-1) Dodgers- 10, Yankees- 0 The Dodgers pounded out 20 hits in this one, as they completely embarrassed the Bronx Bombers. Surprisingly, it was only a 1-0 game going into the 5th, but LA exploded for 7 runs in the inning as they sent 10 men to the plate, and got a 3 run homer from Manny Ramirez, who was 4-6 in the game with 4 RBIs. The Dodgers now are in complete control of the series and have negated the Yankees' home field advantage. Code:
Game 3 New York Yankees (0-2) @ Los Angeles Dodgers (2-0) Dodgers- 6, Yankees- 5 The Yankees got off to a good start in this one, jumping off to a 5-0 lead, but LA battled back with 3 homers in the 4th and 5th innings combined to take a 6-5 lead. Pablo Ozuna had 2 of the 3 homers. That proved to be the difference as the Dodger bullpen shut down the Bronx Bombers after the 4th inning. We did have an unfortunate event in the top of the 6th, as Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter was hit with a pitch which led to a bench clearing brawl. Jeter was ejected along with Dodger catcher Danny Ardoin and pitcher Brad Penny. The Dodgers got the last laugh though by sweeping the series and advancing to the semifinals, where they await the Cleveland/Philadelphia winner. Code:
Also, a note, the dates on the games are the dates they were actually played, so you can see what kind of separation there is between game times. |
