I rented this game for PS2.

Initial Impressions:

WOW! This is one of the few non-football games that will keep my interest. I've played a lot of different Need for Speed titles, but this one tops the cake.

Graphics:

WOW! Again, amazing. Probably the best I've seen on PS2. The racing is only at night, which it rightly should be, and there is plenty of lighting from the city.

Sound:
Worst part of the game IMO. I like rap, but the stuff they put on here sucks. I have about 3 songs that I selected to play.

Gameplay:

The pedestrian cars are perhaps the most annoying thing ever. Expect to run into these guys a lot. Good thing is that the AI will also crash into them. I guess that's one thing I like in the game. No matter what, unless you truly suck, you'll have a shot at winning every race since the AI makes mistakes.

My game:
You start out with 10k. There are about 6 stock cars to choose from. Volkswagen Golf, Honda Civic, Dodge Neon, and a couple others. I chose a Dodge Neon. It sucked and looked ugly in its current state. So I did my first competition, opened up a couple of visual upgrades, got some cash and went to work. After 52/111 of the game's progress I now have a pimpin Neon.

The races:

Drift: There's a track, and the whole point of the competition is do almost powerslide around every corner. The longer you hold it the more points you get.

Drag: Self-explanatory. Straight line, shifting is very important.

Circuit: Run a set amount of laps around the city.

Sprint: Race from point A to point B in the city.

Knockout: A circuit race, except that the car that finishes last each lap is knocked out.

Time Trial: A sprint race by yourself against the clock.

Also one thing I noticed other people didn't like was that the tracks are all in the same city. Not a lot of variety. But I like it, doubt people would ship their pimped out speedsters all over the world every night.

Must buy.

sounds awesome. great review.

i have an xbox so the sound problem of bad rap music is solved. you can always make your own game soundtracks with your own songs on your harddrive. first thing when i get a new racing game is load up my reel big fish albums as the new soundtrack

ive been dropping hints to my wife that she should get me this game for Christmas.
