Coach Ken Esqueda (FBCB)
Well, my history in the re-making dynasty save seems to be corrupt. I can't advance without it crashing. So I am going to fast forward to the future, 2045 to be exact.
I've simmed from the 2015-2016 season until the start of the 2045 season and taken control of a first time head coach named Ken Esqueda. Esqueda has been an assistant coach for 15 seasons before finally being named as the head coach of South Dakota. My goal was to get the 2045ish mark and takeover a first time coach with one of the North or South Dakota schools. Why? I thought it would be a tough challenge with such limited local talent and a few other schools competing for their commitments. My focus will be on scouting and developing players that fit my system more so than just getting the best players I can. What am I looking for? Defense, defense, defense. I am planning to play a 1-3-1 trapping zone defense with long athletic versatile players across the board. I don't care much for depth but if somehow we end up with depth we will figure it out. Ideally we would have 2 point guards in the lineup at all time with a big time shot blocker at the back end of our 1-3-1 to clean up any mess created by the trap. Meet Coach Ken: Code:

2045-2046 South Dakota Coyotes A look at the coaching staff:
Gerald Weil joins the staff with a wealth of experience and loyalty. Weil was an assistant under Clemson's head coach Than Mariano for 21 years before Mariano let him go over the summer. Classy move. Code:
Brian Taylor joins the staff as Recruiting Coordinator. Taylor brings 27 years of experience to the bench. He is a good recruiter for this level. Code:
Dennis Kolb rounds out the staff as Lead Scout. He has no previous experience but seems like a good option for us. Code:
Now let's take a look at the roster. Centers: Code:
Gilliland is easily the starter here, he has great upside and if we develop him properly I could see him developing into a draft pick. He is a perfect fit for what we want defensively and he has great skill for a big guy. Connell doesn't appear to be in the mix right now. Power Forwards: Code:
Small Forwards: Code:
Shooting Guards: Code:
Garcia can shoot from anywhere in the gym, a career backup will finally get a chance to start. He is a career 43% shooter from deep, including 54% his freshman season. Grier is a walk-on and I have no intentions of playing him. Points Guards: Code:
Robinson played mostly at shooting guard last year but he is naturally a point guard. He is not a good defender though. All 3 of these guys are viable options, even Gordon the walk-on who has started for 3 years. |

November Signing Period:
Coach Ken gets his first 2 recruits to sign, more to come on them after the season but here is a quick look: PF Brian Lowery 6'10" 214 lbs from McGregor, MN 2-star recruit, #756 overall Lowery will be a nice addition to our front line, he is very capable defensively but has limited upside on the offensive end. SF Sylvester Goddard 6'9" 227 lbs from Oklahoma City, OK 2-star recruit, #519 overall Goddard is a versatile player, he should play 3 positions during his career at USD. He isn't as good as a defender as we prefer but his length and quickness should allow him to cause fits in the 1-3-1. He also has a nice mid-range jumper. Season Schedule: Code:
Play in the NCAA Tournament. Seems lofty but I really think this team could actually do it. There are a lot of good pieces to start with. USD History Before we get started lets check out some of the history books here at USD... The team has made the NCAA Tournament only 2 times, once in 2038 and once in 2031. Both appearances were after 8-8 finishes in the conference but rallying in the conference tournament to earn the bid. All-time leading scorer is shooting guard Joseph Bynum with 1986 points, he was a deep range shooter, he also holds the school record for career 3 pointers made with 349. The team has a 464-488 record over the last 30 years with 4 appearances in the NIT and 4 appearances in the CIT. They've actually been quite successful in the CIT, winning 7 out of 11 games and reaching the finals in 2034. |

Gulf Coast Showcase - Day 1
November 5, 2045 South Dakota (0-0) vs. George Washington (0-0) GW was 30-7 last year after reaching the Sweet 16. They return 3 starters and have historically been one of the best defensive teams in the country. This will be a tough test to start with. --- What. A. Game. After controlling most of the first half we built a 10 point lead with 15 minutes to go but we went cold and GW ended up taking a 61-55 lead with 1:20 left before we scored 7 unanswered capped off by a 3 by Upton with 0:16 left. GW called a timeout and we put our best defensive group on the court. However, Daryl Lang hit a jumper from the left corner at the buzzer to give GW the 63-62 win! Bennett had a great game despite missing most of the first half with foul trouble, he scored a career high 19 points in just 21 minutes. Code:

Gulf Coast Showcase - Day 2
November 6, 2045 South Dakota (0-1) vs. UT-Rio Grand Valley (0-1) UT-RGV has had quite a run of late, last year they went 26-12 before losing in the CIT Finals. They return 2 starters but one of them, guard Mark Nieman, will miss the game with a torn ACL. --- After racing out to an 11-1 lead we managed to let them back in the game before exploding in the 2nd half. We hit 3 straight 3's to start the half and never looked back. Upton and Garcia were lights out for most of the night, combining for 39 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists. Code:

Gulf Coast Showcase - Day 3
November 7, 2045 South Dakota (1-1) vs. Pittsburgh (1-1) We surely can't complain about the quality of competition in this preseason tournament. Pittsburgh went 26-9 last season after losing in the Round 3 of the NCAA Tournament. They lost their entire starting five last year, so they are very young but they had the 8th best recruiting class in the nation and 3 of those recruits are starting this year. Maybe we can get another good win out of this event... --- They got up on us early 13-3, before Robinson came off the bench and gave us a big spark. However, in the 2nd half they built the lead to 10 and kept it there until late when we just got exhausted by their relentless full court press. They ended up smoking us 73-56. Robinson had 14 points and 4 assists off the bench. Code:

November 14, 2045 UMKC (0-0) at South Dakota (1-2) UMKC is coming off a historically bad 5-25 season and I'm not sure if they consider it good news or bad news but they return all 5 starters. --- After an ugly first 30 minutes we finally got it going and went on a 10-0 run to go up 3 with 4 to play. Foul trouble once again disrupted our rotation but Upton had a huge night with a career high 30 points. We pulled away late for a 75-69 behind some great free throw shooting. Code:

November 18, 2045 South Dakota (2-2) at Arizona State (2-2) The Sun Devils went 23-11 last year and lost in the 3rd Round of the NCAAs. They return 2 starters from that team. Arizona State lead that all-time series 1-0. --- After a slow start we managed to take a double digit lead in the 2nd half before making it close but we sneak out of here with a 61-56 win! We really clamped down defensively, holding them to just 32% shooting from the field. Upton had another big game with 24 points, including 5/9 from deep. Bennett had a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. Code:

November 21, 2045 Eastern Kentucky (1-1) at South Dakota (3-2) EKU was 6-24 last year and they return all 5 starters. Their backcourt is pretty good, with point guard Arthur Yager (14.5 ppg, 48% fg) leading the way. They are a horrible 3-pt shooting team and defensive team, let's hope for a better performance than what we had against UMKC. --- After probably one of the ugliest first halves I have ever seen, we trailed 29-13 with 13 turnovers and we shot just 21% from the field. They start the second have with 4 straight after 2 more turnovers and we trail 33-13. At that point we switched to a full court press and decided to up the tempo to get things going, and it sure did! We ended the game on a 52-27 run and got away with a 65-60 win. Upton exploded for 22 out his 24 points in the 2nd half, he also added 8 rebounds. Code:

November 28, 2045 Idaho State (1-3) at South Dakota (4-2) The Bengals were 7-23 last season, they return 3 starters from that squad. Their leading scorer is junior center Dustin Hang with 12.8 points per game. --- This one was never in doubt after we started the game with a 13-3 run. The only thing worth watching in the 2nd half was at one point Upton was outsourcing Idaho State 25-24 before he took a breather. Upton finished with a career high 31 in the 65-40 blowout. Code:

December 2, 2045 North Dakota (2-4) at South Dakota (5-2) North Dakota is coming off a 25-8 season in which they lost in the 1st Rd of the NCAA Tournament. They return 4 starters including reigning Big Sky Player of the Year, senior power forward Darnell Fred. Fred has a sprained knee but will play and is averaging 19 points and 7 boards per game. North Dakota leads the series all-time 7-5. ---- Fred had a double-double at halftime and we committed 15 fouls, with 4 of our 5 starters in foul trouble to start the 2nd half. We never really contested them much in the 2nd half. They roll 61-43. To make matters worse Robinson was injured in the 2nd half as well. Code:

December 5, 2045 Saint Louis (1-6) at South Dakota (5-3) The Billikens have gradually increased their prestige over the years but last year's team was dreadful, they finished the year 7-24. They return 3 starters, led by senior center Daniel Barley. Barley is averaging 12 points and 5 boards per game, he is a big man at 6'11" and 306 lbs. Saint Louis leads the all-time series 1-2. Robinson's injury is not serious, a minor knee sprain, and he will play his normal role today as he is almost back to full strength. --- An absolute dreadful start to the game. We didn't score our first point until we finally made a free throw with 8:29 left in the first half. Luckily our defense held strong and we stayed in it for a while but by halftime this one was over, as Saint Louis led 27-9. The second half we played even with them but at the end loss 57-39. Just horrible shooting, including 2 of 13 from the free throw line! Code:

December 9, 2045 South Dakota (5-4) at Drake (3-5) The Bulldogs are coming off a 21-12 season in which they lost in the 1st Round of the NCAA Tournament. They return 4 starters from that group, however senior point guard Joel Willett is not one of them. Willett is leading the Bulldogs with 14 points per game, he will be a tough matchup for us. Drake leads the all-time series 6-0. --- We raced out to an early 20-8 lead but they chipped away at it and took the lead going into the half 40-37. We were never really in contention shortly thereafter, the led by as many as 19 in the 2nd half. We did mount a 10-0 run late to get back in it but down the stretch they put the clamps on us. Upton has hit a rough patch offensively, shooting poorly again. Robinson is almost back to 100% but he had a nice game off the bench with 13 points. His development is critical for us, we will need him to score in bunches next year. The Bulldogs roll 83-72. Junior center Robert Larocca had a career high 26 points for the Dogs. Code:

December 12, 2045 South Dakota (5-5) at Long Beach State (0-6) LBSU has lost every game so far this season, with an average scoring margin of 21 points. We can't possibly lose this game, right? Last year they went 8-24 and return zero starters from the team. We lead the all-time series 2-0. --- They just picked apart the 1-3-1 zone and shot a season high 55%. An ugly loss but the shining light is Upton finally started hitting shots again, he scored a game high 24 - including 5/9 from deep. Code:

December 17, 2045 Central Arkansas (1-8) at South Dakota (5-6) UCA has had a rough start to the season but they have played a good schedule. Last year they went 9-22, they 4 starters back from that team. Leading the way is undersized small forward Eddy Lindquist. He is averaging 14 points per game. The all-time series is tied 1-1. --- We survived a slow start and pulled away in the 2nd half with stout defense and a highly efficient offense. Great games off the bench by Robinson (21 pts) and Mann (9 pts, 7 boards). A nice 67-50 win as we get ready to head into conference play soon. Code:

December 22, 2045 South Dakota (6-6) at Kansas (7-3) Over the last 30 years Kansas has gradually fallen into mediocrity, they have not made the NCAA Tournament in 17 seasons. Last year they were 11-20, they return 2 starters. Their leading scorer is sophomore point guard Marco Cartagena, he averages 15.2 points per contest. Kansas leads the all-time series 3-1. --- The Jayhawks gave us a thorough beat down as they just carved up our defense to a 91-62 win. Upton had 25 points, most of which came after the outcome was decided. Code:

You've got me thinking it's time to play a little FBCB.
Are you recruiting just regionally? Doing any overseas looking around? I'm always able to find a gem or two over there depending. Minnesota might give you a player or two, too. I've coached with fictional teams there before. Looking forward to seeing how this goes.

Summit League Game
December 28, 2045 South Dakota (6-7, 0-0) at North Dakota State (8-5, 0-0) Twenty years ago the Bison dominated the Summit League for almost a decade, winning the title 6 out of 7 years. In recent years they've lost their luster and have fallen back to middle of the pack. Last year they went 12-19 overall and 6-10 in the conference. They return 3 starters, including senior point guard James Bass. Bass is averaging 13.7 points per game. They are a very good defensive team, they force you to turn it over a lot and don't allow many assists. They lead the overall series 38-31. ---- For start to finish their press wreaked havoc and the refs didn't do us any favors. We turned it over 19 times and committed 29 fouls. When we weren't fouling we were giving up open looks and when they missed they got the rebound anyway. Bison roll 90-76. Upton had a career high 33, but again most of it came after they were in control. Code:

December 30, 2045 South Dakota (6-8, 0-1) at IPFW (8-7, 1-0) Much like North Dakota State, IPFW peaked about 10 years ago but they are still one of the better programs in the league. Fifteen years ago they made it to the Sweet 16. Last year they went 13-16 overall and 9-7 in the conference. They return 4 starters, including 2nd team All-Conference player Maurice Woolfork. Woolfork leads the league in scoring at 21 points per game. ---- We just couldn't get enough stops...we jumped out to a 10 point lead midway through the 1st half but they chipped away and took a 10 point lead themselves midway through the 2nd half. Upton had a huge night with 24 points and 14 boards. Woolfork had 14 at the half but didn't score the rest of the game. Code:

January 2, 2046 Nebraska-Omaha (7-6, 1-0) at South Dakota (6-9, 0-2) The Mavericks feature one of the best scoring defenses in the country statistically. They don't turn you over, they just play good sound defense - this should be an interesting challenge for our guys. --- Upton couldn't throw the ball in the ocean and he refused to stop trying...going 2/17 from the field. Needless to say we got dominated, 62-42. Code:

January 11, 2046 Western Illinois (7-9, 4-0) at South Dakota (6-10, 0-3) They've got a dynamic backcourt that can put up a lot of points. Freddie Bye (13.8 ppg) and Dennis Parks (12.2 ppg) are quite potent, lets see if we can contain them with our 1-3-1. --- I honestly thought we had the talent to compete in the conference but we get beat quite easily, 84-75. Bye and Parks combined for 40 points, 11 boards, and 7 assists. Our backcourt did well too, Upton and Garcia combined for 47 points in the loss. Code:
