PS2 Mod-Chips
What's the story on these? Are they illegal to buy or is it only illegal to use them the wrong way?
Does anyone have any information about this site?: http://www.mod-chip.com/ Just asking...I swear... |

They violate the DMCA. Meaning, yes, technically, it is illegal to make, purchase or own them. Now, are they going to come to YOUR door and get you, no, it hasn't been their way of doing it. Microsoft and Sony usually go after the chip manufacturers instead of the end user.

Most poor college kids who get sent to the hole end up being modified by an end user.

Mod-chips
I have a PS2 but I use swap magic for it with a flip top cover.
It is basically so you can play import games like the Fire Pro series ect. The mod chip usually has to be placed into the board and is fixed there for good. Last edited by SnDvls : 04-05-2006 at 12:52 AM. |

The only thing I have heard from Sony on Mod-Chips is that by installing them you void your warranty. So if you destroy your PS2 installing the chip your screwed.

Using the mod chips bypasses the copy protection schemes they use, thereby making it a violation of the DMCA and therefor illegal.

I love that skit..."I'll take the rapists for 100."

Should warn you that...
Any Modified Xbox that is on xbox live.... Xbox live will kick your modded xbox off the network.. and continue to do so.. So anyone with xbox live should not mod their xbox if they want to continue to play online.. |

I have a magic 3.1 modchip for my Sony. I use it to play my "backups". I don't play online so the problems won't affect me. Apparently EA has some issues and does not allow a PS2 backup to work online. You have to use the original for it to work.
