My dad had a nice Arnold Palmer story that happened after he and his second wife had retired down to Palm Desert. They and another couple had just played a round at one of the Arnie-designed courses down there and were tying a few on at the 19th hole afterwards, when who should come in but the course architect, himself. Against my dad's advice, his wife and the lady from the other couple proceed to drunkenly gush all over the poor man. Dad said it was really cringe-worthy. But Arnie handled it like a real champ and even picked up the next round. A classy reaction from a classy guy. RIP Arnie.

My dad was a HUGE Arnie fan...and he had a ton of stories about him. In fact, one of my favorites is from his tournament at Bay Hill. Now for the story to make since, I have to provide some background. If you've never been to Bay Hill they have a rule that your hat comes off when you enter the clubhouse (no hats worn inside). This is at Arnie insistence, and should you forget the staff will remind you.
Well one year the tournament ended in the rain, and they moved the presentation ceremony indoors, and the producers said for the winner to get a dry hat to put on so the sponsor's logos would look good on TV. At which point, Arnie stepped in and said, he won't be wearing a hat in here at all, and if you don't like it you can take your ceremony back outside. |
