4 Wheel Drive is an amazing thing
I am in awe. I take back every bad thing I said about those crazy assholes whipping down the roads during a storm. I always owned a little Honda, which needless to say, isnt exactly the best vehicle in the winter. Last summer i bought a Wrangler and I must say its amazing. I live in semi-upstate NY and we are getting hit somewhat hard, but not a problem. I've been out all day on the roads without a single worry. God bless this 4 wheel drive.

While its real nice, how often do you really really need it? I live in suburban Philadelphia, and the roads are always plowed the day during or after it snows. If you counted the hours that you really needed one to get around, I bet that you'd be under 24 hours a year. To me, I think the Hauling capacity is a much better reason to get a bigger truck/suv. |

True, that its probably not needed all too much. But I'm a 19 year old kid, no need for a big heavy duty truck. I also like to take it off-road. Also, where I live, on a day when its snowing you will really appreciate the 4 wheel drive, because they dont do all that great of a job around here. They do the main roads decent, but the back roads they usually get to at their own conveinance. It sure beats the hell out of sitting around every snowy day after a failed attempt of getting the little 2 door Accord out of the driveway.
When I grow older, get a home, job, family and such, you are right though, a nice truck will surley be the way to go. |

Remember that 4-wheel drive DOES NOT HELP YOU STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Many people seem to forget that.

I live in Alaska, 4wd is a must here, and I gotta side with Craptacular on this one. Lotsa 4wd's = lotsa morons going WAY too fast and then trying to stop on the glare ice. All that = fun for the observer, not so fun for a participant. Be careful out there JimJam, as was stated earlier, 4wd will help you go fast, but sure won't help you stop fast.

One question. Do you have studs on your wheels when the road's covered by a thin layer of ice?

Nope, no studs 3ric.......I just got these amazing new tires which are doing me just fine. And I agree %100 about the stopping. I take my time while I'm on the road, do a lot of down shifting instead of breaking. My point was that it's so much better actually being able to drive around in the snow with this, then being stuck. And in my opinion, this Jeep is a work of art. My friend has a Pathfinder, very nice vehicle, but I remember a few times last winter when we went out and I didnt feel all to safe, we were all over the roads a few times. In my Jeep, so far, it hasn't been a problem at all, if I take my time. I'll admit it, I got a little cocky at first and learned my lesson.

yeah, Jim, good to hear you seem to know your limit...
Around here, we always say that the difference between a car with AWD and one without it is the fact that when the AWD will get off the road, they'll plow abut 30 feet deeper... I live in Quebec City, where there is about 55 times more snow than anywhere in the States. I've never owned an AWD vehicle, probably never will. Good tires is the way to go. Good tires and AWD is nice, but good tires is usually enough... FM

Quebec City has an annual snowfall of 13 inches. By random comparison, Fargo, ND has 35 inches. |

huh? don't know where you got this information, 13 inches is one snowstorm... look at this stats page from the weathernetwork for precepitions for Quebec City... http://www.theweathernetwork.com/wea...0.htm?CAQC0441 and this page for Fargo, ND... http://www.theweathernetwork.com/wea...3.htm?USND0115 Let's assume that snow falls only from December through March... For Quebec City, it's 110 inches (280cm) For Fargo, it's 31 inches (79cm) While I'll agree it's not 55 times you should have seen my point without me having to explain it... FM

I see your info but it's just not right, impossible that we get only 13 inches of snow in a howle winter, just impossible... I could show you picture of you front and backyard...
That page is a tourism page. My guess is they don't wanna scare off visitors No way the average temperature is 18F in January either... FM

I lived in Fargo, ND for 5 years and they get more than 35 inches of snow each winter, not to mention the wind which creates blizzard conditions with just a few inches of snow. Think back to the Great flood of '97. That winter alone Fargo got around 110 inches of snow.

I know my first statement wasn't accurate. There are probably plenty of cities in the States that get either more snow or colder temperatures than Quebec City, but not too many... If you dig a little you'll find one, or many, my point was more about the fact I never needed an AWD to go around and we do get lots of snow...

Living in upstate New York, I really don't want to hear anyone else crying about the amount of snow they get! BTW, how about that NE-Miami game today in Foxboro?

I found out this weekend that the car I got not too long ago (95 Elantra) SUCKS in the snow. I went up a steep hill, which my old Shadow would have handled fine, at about 1.5 MPH with my tires spinning the entire time. Don't know if it is the car or the tires, but needless to say, I will not be driving in the snow anymore. My car was sliding all over the place.
I miss my my Shadow. |

As an former owner of a '92 Sundance (identical twin) for over 10 years, I'm shocked to hear someone say this. Funny enough, I now have an Elantra, albeit a new one with traction control. |

I never had a problem with my Shadow until the end of its life, after about 150,000. That thing got put through hell and kept kicking. It handled pretty well through all kinds of weather.
My new (old) car does not. |

I will agree with you there. Mine went through more than a decade of Wisconsin winters and the associated salt and crud, was never parked inside, and actually wasn't too bad to drive in the snow. |
