The Fermi Paradox

Lifted from another thread. A nice read for people who like to wonder about our place in the grand scheme of the universe.

This is the one I subscribe to:

Possibility 6) There’s plenty of activity and noise out there, but our technology is too primitive and we’re listening for the wrong things

I mean, we are listening for radio signals, but we ourselves have only been using them for a little over 100 years.

Dola,

They touch on it in the article, but the expanse of space is even more humbling when you realize that what look like an innumerable amount of stars in the sky actually ends up being only about 6,000 that are visible with the naked eye, and all in an incredibly small local section of the Milky Way galaxy.

And how many of those "stars" are actually galaxies? The scale of the universe is truly humbling.

There are only three or four objects visible with the naked eye in the night sky that aren't in the Milky Way. Depending on if you are in the Southern or Northern Hemisphere, there is Andromeda and the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Everything else something in our solar system, or a 'local' star in the Milky Way.
