FOF8: Life In A Sandbox (Empty Cupboard)
I'm a well-documented tinkerer, so I can never really get a handle on FOF. That said, I bought FOF8 in a moment of weakness and maybe to get me to stop playing college basketball and building cities temporarily.
This omnibus dynasty should last me through whenever I get bored, I imagine unless I somehow start figuring out what the hell I'm doing. We are headed into the 2059 season. BACKGROUND I created a fictional NFL with real team names, but put teams in non-NFL cities deliberately. I've also simmed like 30+ seasons to get some history. I originally started with the Orlando Titans (who now play in Anchorage) and then a few years ago in simming, moved over to the Sioux Falls Vikings (who have moved to Youngstown, OH) for this upcoming season. The AI moved the Rams to Athens, GA and the Packers from Cheyenne, WY to Ann Arbor, MI. Hate that the game moves teams without any say, but it's partially why I just put them in ridiculous places to start. Apparently Davenport are moving somewhere, too, but no idea where. Here's how everyone has done up through the end of the 2058 season. Code:

I'm not really good enough at FOF to have a ton of house rules constraining me, but here's how I'm playing:
INJURIES: 200 (I like realistic injury issues and giving backups a chance to shine.) CAP VARIABILITY: 10-99. Because why not? CHEMISTRY: Off. AI HANDLED DEPTH CHARTS: I don't have time for this level of micromanaging. GAMEPLANNING: Haha, right. Not happening. EMPTY CUPBOARD: Because the league is fictional and I don't know these dudes, I'm just going to do an empty cupboard when I finally start taking over this team. We'll release everybody. Borrowing from BELCO: Quote:
I'm going to take over the Honolulu Broncos, mostly because they hadn't already been slated for a move in-game. I'm going to rename the franchise and have had a move to Stockton, CA already approved. We don't have enough CA teams in this league, anyway. I'll take over during their first season in Stockton and begin the process of drop kicking everyone off the roster and starting from scratch building the franchise from the ground up. Even if it's a slow process for me, it'll surely give me an ability to get immersed into things over time. Last edited by Young Drachma : 12-25-2016 at 11:35 AM. |

In 2062, the Steelers left Davenport, IA for Arizona.
The move to Stockton is complete in 2064. We become the Stockton Swarm I've released everyone from our roster. This season (2064-65) is my first in the captain's chair. I'll fire all of our staff and then get started on getting our maiden roster out of the way and staff. Last edited by Young Drachma : 12-25-2016 at 01:36 PM. |

Initial Staff (2064-65): STOCKTON SWARM
If you notice a trend, it's that I'm going after guys who can develop young players and/or talent. I don't really have time for the fog of war shenanigans, so I have scouting ratings on 100.

Needless to say, this whole having to sign a whole roster thing in an empty cupboard scenario is mondo tedious, but I am trudging along in spite of the temptation to let the AI just fill my roster. But somehow, I managed to sign a full roster after LFA and not surprisingly, we have the youngest team in the league average age 23 years old. Cheap tickets (lowest prices in the league) did not get us more fans despite being in a new market. Maybe the dire lack of talent is an issue? Code:

Here's our initial roster. I'll need to get the roster down to 46 before the pre-season games can take place, but...we're gonna be so bad. At least I drafted a few players that have the potential to be good down the road. That bodes well. More later.

IF I HAVE A HEAD COACH WHY DOES THIS GAME REQUIRE ME TO MICROMANAGE EVERY DECISION ON THE ACTIVE ROSTER I AM GOING TO LOSE MY MIND. I DON'T CARE THAT MUCH.

2046 SEASON RECAP
As expected, THE SWARM did not win a game. Didn't want to invest a lot of time with the roster knowing we were bad. Code:
Code:
Here's the team summary for this year: SPOILER WE AREN'T ANY GOOD. I'm going to keep it up with this team though. Rome wasn't built in a day. Neither will this Swarm. Last edited by Young Drachma : 12-25-2016 at 07:22 PM. |

Obviously, on the bright side, we'll end up with the #1 pick in this year's upcoming draft and that should at least give us some talent infusion though we'll still be bad. I've also done a decent job of identifying guys who can help us.
STAFF: No changes TICKET PRICES: Slashing them more, because frankly we don't deserve the money. FRANCHISE PLAYER: We're not ever going to be able to use the franchise tag. New house rule. Mostly because I don't want to have to figure out who to issue it to, once that's something we'd want to do. FREE AGENCY: I only have 27 guys on the active roster right now and I find signing dudes massively tedious. I'll come back to this though and we'll figure out what approach to take to signing more guys. By and large, we're just going to re-sign a lot of the dudes we already had for simplicity purposes and for the fact that if we're gonna be bad anyway, we might as well do it without a revolving door. I'm not sure if I have the stomach for the slowness that is Empty Cupboard life, though. I might have to relax my standards, let the AI take over signing at least a bare minimum of guys so that we can just sim through the first few years of being bad. I just don't have the patience for that kind of tinkering just to get a baseline roster together when we're gonna suck anyway. So that's what I'm going to do. It'll enable me to get through a second season, let me develop the young talent I do have and start to figure out what guys I like on this team. |

Milwaukee is moving to Akron in 2070. (Jim really needs to lower the time on these franchise moves. Real life moves don't happen over a million years anymore.)
2065 STOCKTON SWARM DRAFT PICKS: Quote:
Drafting a RB first overall is dumb, I know. But I just need guys I can identify with and I think he might be can't miss, so I took the plunge. YOLO. |

2065 SEASON REVIEW
Not sure 3 wins is worth celebration, but it is when you went 0-fer in the first season.
Code:
Here are the bars for my first two first rounders from last year and this year. One nice thing about ending the empty cupboard charade is seeing what kinds of bottom feeders the AI can pick up for me. WR Buddy Kemp never got a shot to start anywhere else, he shows up in Stockton and he's a 1200 yard receiver, 5th best in the entire league this year. Not bad! To be fair he had ELEVEN DROPS which is why this former first-round probably flamed out of his other clubs. Geez. |

Our punter Evan Adams is a two-time All League selection. He was 1st team last year and 2nd this year.
Sevon Kennedy was named to the All-League First Team at OLB in his 2nd season. As far as this off-season, I'm going to keep building the team. I'm still not able to sign anybody that we didn't draft or who wasn't a UDFA, but the AI only gets to fill the roster for me when I fall short. So it's still the spirit of the empty cupboard for my purposes, I just don't want to try to waste a lot of time trying to figure out what crappy third tier dudes to sign when I'm just gonna be bad anyway. We'll see what the draft yields us this year. Back again soon, but committed to seeing this team eventually get good. |
