October 22nd, 2018 UMass 2-4 vs Florida International 1-5
UMass: Offense Scoring 15.7 (101), Rushing 71.7 (120), Passing 225.0 (74) Defense Scoring 39.5 (99), Rushing 162.5 (57), Passing 263.8 (97) FIU: Offense Scoring 12.8 (112), Rushing 124.7 (104), Passing 158.3 (117) Defense Scoring 32.4 (68), Rushing 210.7 (102), Passing 195.7 (20) All-time record vs opponent: 3-2 Injury report: CB Jose Taylor Doubtful (Hernia), T Reginald Small Out (Sprained Knee) This is a pretty even matchup of horrible teams FIUs lone win is a 48-6 thrashing of 1-6 Texas State and it was expectedly ugly to watch. We went 1912 old school in this one as both teams combined for less than 600 yards of total offense, with neither being able to punch it into the end zone. It is really sad that it looked like our offense would be much improved this year and has in fact almost taken a step back as FIU outgains us 326-267 and accumulates 17 first downs to our 11. The difference in this one came down to the kickers as both teams attempted a single field goal in each quarter, with our offensive MVP Dewey Hicks connecting from 19, 47, 38 and the game winner from 29 with 50 seconds to go in the game. His counterpart, Randy Jewell missed from 32 yards out in the 2nd quarter and that was the difference. Darryl Lavigne was again mistake prone, going 13-25, for a meager 134 yards and 2 more picks, giving him 10 for the year, which is firmly on pace to surpass last years total of 14. The running game was a semi bright spot, as Seth Wooley ran for a season high 98 yards on 21 carries. Defensively I dont even need to say that Harry Zeigler again led the way with 9 tackles, while CB Bobby Padgett, starting in place of Jose Taylor forced and recovered a key fumble. Final Score: UMass 12 FIU 9 Recruiting: Scholarships offered 16 of 16 QB Richard Kolb ** (1340) interest 29 (no other schools) Small bump, slow and steady and we only need depth at QB this season anyway. QB Ken Leigh *** (1116) interest 7 (no other schools) Meh RB Joshua Curry *** (1089) interest 10 (no other schools) Fingers crossed more than ever as Wake Forest has offered plan B Loren Wallace (37 interest) FB Geoffrey Daughtry ** (2415) interest 74 (no other schools) No change. TE Todd Thorne ** (1392) interest 28 (no other schools) Interest dipped, must not have like me calling him slow and weak last week. WR Miguel Williams ** (1341) interest 37 (no other schools) Still holding serve with him. G Norman Harbin ** (1385) interest 40 (no other schools) Seem like a good choice to offer him as he is at 40 interest two weeks later. T Kurt Kay ** (1542) interest 41 (no other schools) This Goomba, come on, we have a bench spot waiting for you! K Donald Scott * (2719) interest 90 (Old Dominion) This may go to the wire. DT Ezequiel Charles *** (1012) interest 10 (no other schools) Still no other contenders for his service, new backup option Johnny Denning ** (1251) shows an initial interest of 21. LB Francis Franklin *** (938) interest 10 (no other schools) Still a huge long shot, I expect other offers to come soon as other schools look to replace players they lose. LB George Orr ** (1264) interest 46 (no other schools) Maintaining current levels. CB Salvatore Dockery *** (1030) interest 8 (no other schools) Shocked nobody else has offered him. SS Karl Farmer ** (1548) interest 29 (no other schools) Continued tough sledding for a middle of the road prospect. Commits: N/A Lost: G Kevin Smith ** (1285) interest 22 (Commit to UConn week 7) He is the first recruit we lose as he pulls the trigger on the Huskies offer. At least we didnt lose anyone else. This is turning into our least promising class yet. With 5 games to play, we are one win away from tying our 28 year season high. If that doesn't scream horrible, I don't know what does. |

Is the glass half full or half empty though? Maybe it screams 'incremental progress' rather than 'horrible'.
No? Okay then. |

LOL, no we still suck. Next year will be interesting with Lavigne gone and Felton Haight and James Kelly competing to replace him. I think either will be in upgrade, especially with out improved receiving corp having another year under their belts. In terms of this year, the last winnable game is our final one against Texas State, which will come the week after what should be a horrific beatdown at the hands of Nebraska (now 7-1). Games 9 and 10 against Bowling Green (3-5) and Buffalo (4-4) probably won't be as competitive as they once looked to be either. |

October 29th, 2018 UMass 3-4 at Akron 4-3
UMass: Offense Scoring 15.1 (101), Rushing 80.4 (117), Passing 212.0 (85) Defense Scoring 35.1 (92), Rushing 161.9 (53), Passing 250.1 (81) Akron: Offense Scoring 22.4 (85), Rushing 131.6 (97), Passing 216.9 (80) Defense Scoring 33.3 (87), Rushing 214.9 (104), Passing 246.3 (75) All-time record vs opponent: 3-2 Injury report: CB Jose Taylor Doubtful (Hernia), T Reginald Small Doubtful (Sprained Knee) This one started out wild, before settling into SOS. Akron came out smoking, opening the game with 21 straight points courtesy of the right arm of Kent Land who tosses scoring strikes of 53, 25 and 2 yards. The Minutemen would not lie down (at least not yet) on this day however, as a pair of Darryl Lavigne TD passes to TE Robert Kerns (3 yards) and Frosh WR David Schneider (57 yards), followed by a 44 yard FG from Dewey Hicks had us down 21-17 and back in the hunt. From there it was all downhill as Land tossed two more TD passes to finish the day 15-27, 310 yards with 5 TDs, before Thomas Wray (20 carries, 106 yards) capped the scoring off with a 7 yard run as we just couldnt hang down the stretch. Lavigne had one of his better games, protecting the ball and going 22-38, 273 yards with 2 TDs and 0 interceptions, but he missed some key throws in the second half. Our running game continued to operate in park, with Seth Wooley logging 44 yards on 12 carries. Kerns had his best day as a collegian grabbing 8 balls for 53 yards to go with his first career TD. Akron did a great job shutting down Leon Belcher, who had but 1 catch for 5 yards. Final Score: Akron 42 UMass 17 Recruiting: Scholarships offered 16 of 16 QB Richard Kolb ** (1340) interest 29 (no other schools) Kind of disappointed his interest isnt a bit higher. November 5th, 2018 UMass 3-5 vs Bowling Green 3-5
UMass: Offense Scoring 15.4 (100), Rushing 80.5 (117), Passing 219.6 (81) Defense Scoring 36.0 (94), Rushing 162.5 (51), Passing 261.4 (90) Bowling Green: Offense Scoring 26.3 (78), Rushing 203.1 (43), Passing 209.1 (86) Defense Scoring 22.5 (41), Rushing 156.8 (43), Passing 233.4 (56) All-time record vs opponent: 0-3 Injury report: CB Jose Taylor Probable (Hernia), T Reginald Small Probable (Sprained Knee), CB Bobby Padgett Questionable (Depression) and I am not depressed about this season?? The Falcons lead 10-0 early in the second quarter and it looks like it could be a long day, but the boys get some fight in them and it stays there the rest of the way. Darryl Lavigne, who will again have a turnover free day, finds Ezra Garber from 5 yards out and we go into half down 10-7. The 3rd quarter features the defenses, until Dewey Hicks connects from 45 yards out with under 3 minutes to go, but Bowling Green comes right back with a quick drive, capped by a 6 yard scamper from Robert Landis (17-110) to lead 17-10 after 3. The Falcons gash us for 303 yards on the ground, to go with 327 through the air, while we manage only 258 TOTAL! It is all about efficiency though as David Schneider hauls in a 15 yard pass from Lavigne, before we convert a turnover into another TD on Lavignes third TD pass, this one from 2 yards out to Leon Belcher and we now lead 24-17 with 6:02 to go! Alas, our hemorrhaging of yards will bite us as BG QB James Klinger says this is all the time he needs and he tosses TD strikes of 38 yards to Craig Roberts and 46 yards to Paul McConnell (Where the hell are our safeties?), the latter coming with just 57 seconds left. It wastes a decent day by Lavigne 20-40, 212 yards, 3 TD, 0 Int that sees Leon Belcher haul in 11 of his passes for 119 yards. Our running game is suck deluxe again, with Wooley the leader gaining 32 yards on 11 carries. Harry Zeigler (who else) tallies 11 tackles to lead the D, Donald Ramirez adds 9, while the depressed Bobby Padgett, still subbing for Jose Taylor, gets a pick. Final Score: Bowling Green 30 UMass 24 Recruiting: Scholarships offered 16 of 16 QB Richard Kolb ** (1340) interest 29 (no other schools) No changes, he smart as hell, has no arm, but good athleticism. QB Ken Leigh *** (1116) interest 11 (no other schools) Accurate and smart, but not a very big arm either. RB Joshua Curry *** (1089) interest 10 (no other schools) Our backup plan Loren Wallace ** (1271) commits to Wake Forest as I expected. FB Geoffrey Daughtry ** (2415) interest 75 (no other schools) We gotta be close with him, though being a fullback and not very strong is a red flag. TE Todd Thorne ** (1392) interest 19 (no other schools) Hovering at lukewarm interest, great hands and agility, but again, so sloooow. WR Miguel Williams ** (1341) interest 36 (no other schools) Come and join your recruiting buddy!. G Andrew Savage *** (1185) interest 6 (no other schools) This guy is the total package, minus sub-par pass blocking, which is exactly why we have no shot. G Norman Harbin ** (1385) interest 40 (no other schools) Liking him more and more, scouts as strong, agile, fast and exceptional at pass blocking. Run blocking, not so much and we suck enough there already. T Kurt Kay ** (1542) interest 42 (no other schools) This scrub, interestingly he scouts as having bad intelligence,. Not taking the best offer he will get (us) just confirms this. K Donald Scott * (2719) interest 87 (Old Dominion) Dipping a few points the last 2 weeks, not a good sign. DT Ezequiel Charles *** (1012) interest 10 (no other schools) Quick, fast and weak, maybe that is why there are no other suitors still. LB Francis Franklin *** (938) interest 5 (Louisiana Tech) Was fun while it lasted, will be dumping him next week. LB George Orr ** (1264) interest 46 (no other schools) Our next big hope, great tackler, smart, fast and strong, could be a sleeper. CB Salvatore Dockery *** (1030) interest 11 (no other schools) His speed is only average, which could be the reason he is still not heavily recruited. SS Karl Farmer ** (1548) interest 31 (no other schools) Not sure what I saw in him. He is dumb and a shitty tackler. Commits: WR Troy Mitchell ** (1402) interest 40 (no other schools) Commits week 11, great speed, thats about it. Lost: G Kevin Smith ** (1285) interest 22 (Commit to UConn week 7) He is the first recruit we lose as he pulls the trigger on the Huskies offer. Our first commit and I am surprised he did so with only medium interest, but well take it. We lose a total of four we were showing love to, but had not offered. This forces some shuffling as I look for new recruits to fill those voids. I also get complaints from a half dozen players that they are sick of losing .WTF, then play better!!! |

November 12th, 2018 UMass 3-6 at Buffalo 5-4
UMass: Offense Scoring 16.3 (99), Rushing 76.7 (117), Passing 218.8 (81) Defense Scoring 35.3 (93), Rushing 178.1 (70), Passing 268.7 (102) Buffalo: Offense Scoring 29.4 (66), Rushing 226.0 (25), Passing 212.7 (85) Defense Scoring 26.8 (59), Rushing 178.3 (71), Passing 173.0 (9) All-time record vs opponent: 0-2 Injury report: CB Brian Freeman Questionable (Appendicitis), DT Clayton Kirkpatrick Questionable (Stress Fracture Foot), CB Jose Taylor Probable (Hernia), T Reginald Small Probable (Sprained Knee) Both friggin starters at corner banged up, dammit. The surprising Bulls come into the game with a winning record, a strong running game and a top 10 pass defense. Just what we need! Well, despite this lofty ranking Darryl Lavigne shreds them early and we get the only score of the first quarter on a 13 yard pass from him to Ezra Garber. From there it is a barn burner into the second half as Buffalo knots it on a 62 yard run by Rodger Cobbs, we jump back up on a Lavigne to Belcher strike covering 5 yards. Buffalo scores the next two as James Trapp hooks up with Keith Walker on 29 and 28 yard TD passes. We tie it again on a 1 yard plunge by Donald Neil and then the wheels comes off. Buffalo scores the final three touchdowns of the game as our offense bogs down and the defense implodes. They end up outgaining us 525 to 297, which includes almost 300 yards on the ground! Both Joseph Altman (121) and Rodger Cobbs (147) top 100 yards and James Trapp throws for another 225, plus 4 TDs, though we do pick him off twice. For the good guys Lavigne cools off after his fast start to end up 18-31, 198 yards, 2 TD, 1 Int. Seth Wooley again paces the weak ass ground game 15-61, while SS Robert Watkins breaks Harry Zeiglers run as our leading tackler, getting 8. Starting Sam Donald Ramirez gets one of our picks and reserve corner Charles Kay the other, as we get Buffalo bowl eligible. Final Score: Buffalo 42 UMass 21 Recruiting: Scholarships offered 16 of 16 QB Richard Kolb ** (1340) interest 30 (no other schools) Time running out for others to jump in. QB Ken Leigh *** (1116) interest 11 (no other schools) Looks like his lack of arm strength is hurting him. We dont care. WR Miguel Williams ** (1341) interest 34 (no other schools) Interest dips slightly again, but I still think we get him. G Andrew Savage *** (1185) interest 7 (no other schools) Another potential miracle? We will know soon. G Norman Harbin ** (1385) interest 44 (no other schools) Feeling somewhat confident we land him. T Kurt Kay ** (1542) interest 46 (no other schools) We are still waiting K Donald Scott * (2719) interest 92 (Old Dominion) This is the battle I am most interested in. He loves us, but does he love OD more? DT Ezequiel Charles *** (1012) interest 8 (no other schools) Still out there, as much as he hates it. LB Francis Franklin *** (938) interest 8 (Louisiana Tech) Keeping him around until he commits to La Tech, just in case. CB Salvatore Dockery *** (1030) interest 11 (no other schools) Despite his lack of elite speed, would be great to steal him. SS Karl Farmer ** (1548) interest 32 (no other schools) We may be cursed, err blessed to get him. Commits: WR Troy Mitchell ** (1402) interest 40 (no other schools) Commits week 11, great speed, thats about it. FB Geoffrey Daughtry ** (2415) interest 75 (no other schools) Commits week 12, fills a need. LB George Orr ** (1264) interest 46 (no other schools) Commits week 12, like I said last week, I think he is a sleeper, good get! Lost: G Kevin Smith ** (1285) interest 22 (Commit to UConn week 7) He is the first recruit we lose as he pulls the trigger on the Huskies offer. Very happy with the week in recruiting, pick up two kids we need to fill holes and dont lose any players we have offers out to. |

November 19th, 2018 UMass 3-7 vs #16 Nebraska 8-2
UMass: Offense Scoring 16.8 (96), Rushing 78.9 (118), Passing 216.7 (82) Defense Scoring 36.0 (96), Rushing 190.0 (82), Passing 264.6 (97) Nebraska: Offense Scoring 38.2 (39), Rushing 247.4 (18), Passing 267.2 (37) Defense Scoring 17.7 (14), Rushing 133.6 (21), Passing 193.2 (18) All-time record vs opponent: 0-10 Injury report: CB Brian Freeman Questionable (Appendicitis), DT Clayton Kirkpatrick Porbable (Stress Fracture Foot) I dont think its any secret how this one was going to turn out, so lets get straight to the carnage. Nebraska did what they needed to do in the first half, outscoring us 45-0 behind a punishing run game that racked up 343 yards and again saw two players Edmund Kuntz (12-130) and Jimmy Homan (15-116) top the century mark. Cornhusker QB Jefferson Rouse played just over half the game, but still managed to chuck 5 TD passes, going 13-23, for 257 yards s the game was really over at the coin toss. Nebraska really was kind and subbed liberally after halftime, only outscoring us 17-10 after the break, so at least we salvaged some dignity. Their defense held us to 237 yards a and a disheartening 1-13 on 3rd down conversions, which of course gave our punter Vincent Anderson plenty of PT, and he responded averaging 51.1 yards a kick, with 2 inside the 20. Of course this only gave Nebraska more field to pad stats. Apart from that Darryl Lavigne was 20-38, 196 yards, 1 TD, 2 Int. Lavigne has improved on his TD/Int ratio from last year (17/13 currently) and could reach 20 TD passes against Texas State in our finale. Leon Belcher, who hauled in 4 passes for 59 yards now, has 54 receptions for 865 yards and an outside shot to hit 1000 yards with a magical day against the Bobcats next week. I would the true freshman has been our offensive MVP for the year and I am glad he is back for 3 more seasons. Final Score: Nebraska 62 UMass 10 Recruiting: Scholarships offered 16 of 16 QB Richard Kolb ** (1340) interest 28 (no other schools) He is starting to feel us less and less QB Ken Leigh *** (1116) interest 13 (no other schools) At a season high interest level right now .Hmm RB Joshua Curry *** (1089) interest 12 (no other schools) I start showing some love to Victor Earle ** (1355) in anticipation of losing him soon. TE Todd Thorne ** (1392) interest 29 (no other schools) I am calling this now, we get him, cant see anyone else jumping in. WR Miguel Williams ** (1341) interest 37 (no other schools) Still positive on our chances with him, despite the low interest. G Andrew Savage *** (1185) interest 9 (no other schools) Still nobody high on his list, I know he is going to break our hearts, but man it would be nice, if only so spite his uncle Brian. G Norman Harbin ** (1385) interest 43 (no other schools) Still hanging in there. T Kurt Kay ** (1542) interest 46 (no other schools) Nothing more to say about him DT Johnny Denning ** (1251) interest 30 This is much more likely than ever landing Charles was. LB Francis Franklin *** (938) interest 8 (Louisiana Tech, Toledo, Cincinnati) Our fate is sealed now. In anticipation of this I sent my scout back down to Puerto Rico and may have another gem there, stay tuned. CB Salvatore Dockery *** (1030) interest 11 (Louisiana Lafayette ) At last another offer, but what is it with all these Bayou schools recruiting Massachusetts? SS Karl Farmer ** (1548) interest 32 (no other schools) Starting to think we will land him now with no other suitors. FB Geoffrey Daughtry ** (2415) interest 75 (no other schools) Commits week 12, fills a need. LB George Orr ** (1264) interest 46 (no other schools) Commits week 12, like I said last week, I think he is a sleeper, good get! K Donald Scott * (2719) interest 92 (Old Dominion) Commits week 13, whaaat!?!?! We win a recruiting battle!! Lost: G Kevin Smith ** (1285) interest 22 (Commit to UConn week 7) He is the first recruit we lose as he pulls the trigger on the Huskies offer. DT Ezequiel Charles *** (1012) interest 8 (Commit to Marshall week 13) The Thundering Herd finally give him another offer and he cant say yes fast enough. We have a kicker to replace the departing Dewey Hicks and we beat out another school for him, suck Monarchs. Losing Charles is not a surprise, just cant believe the swiftness in which he snapped up the Marshall offer. We have been lucky keeping a lot of our reaches on the line, but I am sure we lose from 2-4 this next week. |

November 26th, 2018 UMass 3-8 vs Texas State 2-9
UMass: Offense Scoring 16.2 (100), Rushing 75.5 (120), Passing 214.8 (84) Defense Scoring 38.4 (100), Rushing 203.9 (98), Passing 265.9 (100) Texas State: Offense Scoring 8.7 (124), Rushing 54.3 (126), Passing 162.5 (118) Defense Scoring 40.0 (108), Rushing 233.6 (112), Passing 229.5 (49) All-time record vs opponent: 1-1 Injury report: LB Harry Zeigler Out (Torn Abdominal muscle), T Ray Wright Questionable (Broken Finger), TE Charles Young Questionable (Sprained Wrist), SS William Qualls Questionable (Stiff Neck), C Matthew Goodrich Probable (Cold) At last, someone with worse numbers on both sides of the ball than us, but losing Zeigler against Nebraska last week will sting. We need to end the season with a win and the team comes out on fire, racing to a 31-6 halftime lead as Darryl Lavigne ends his college career in style, connecting with Leon Belcher (9 yds), Ezra Garber (23 yds) and Tyrell Cox (11 yds) on first half TD passes. Donald Neil adds the other first half score on a 1 yard run. The defense will not miss Harry Zeigler as they go on to hold the Bobcats to 249 yards and only 8 first downs for the game. The second half sees Lavigne (17-21, 331 yards) hit Thomas Thomas for his 4 TD pass of the day, to go with 1 interception as the team keeps the pedal down the entire 60 minutes. On the ground we 131 yards as Allen Amaya gets a season high 62 yards on 12 carries in his final College game. Seth Wooley is banged up and finishes with 3 carries for 24 yards, giving him a team high 537 on the season. We need much more from the run game next year! Five players lead the Defense with 5 tackles each and FS James Whitley forces and recovers his first career fumble. T Reginald Small gets 6 pancakes, giving him 22 for the season and in 19 career starts has only allowed 1 sack, plus he is only a sophomore. Final Score: UMass 54 Texas State 9 Recruiting: Scholarships offered 16 of 16 QB Richard Kolb ** (1340) interest 30 (no other schools) At this point, we may be his only option. QB Ken Leigh *** (1116) interest 13 (no other schools) This could get interesting as he still has no other offers. TE Todd Thorne ** (1392) interest 29 (no other schools) Still think we get him for depth. WR Miguel Williams ** (1341) interest 36 (no other schools) Same as Thorne, dont think we lose him now. G Andrew Savage *** (1185) interest 3 (Western Kentucky) My heart is officially broken, I will have a new offer here next week. G Norman Harbin ** (1385) interest 46 (no other schools) Close to a sure thing at this point. DT Johnny Denning ** (1251) interest 33 Another I am hopeful for, but apart from intelligence, nothing stands out. LB James Ferguson *** (509) interest 1 (No other schools) Meet the latest find from Puerto Rico, now it will be only a matter of time before others take note. Recruiting Wrap-up:
Scholarships offered 16 of 16 G Irving Pace ** (1794) interest 25 (no other schools) Recruiting is over until signing day, but I throw him my last offer, hoping he commits on signing day to give us another body here Commits: WR Troy Mitchell ** (1402) interest 40 (no other schools) Commits week 11, great speed, thats about it. FB Geoffrey Daughtry ** (2415) interest 75 (no other schools) Commits week 12, fills a need. LB George Orr ** (1264) interest 46 (no other schools) Commits week 12, like I said last week, I think he is a sleeper, good get! T Kurt Kay ** (1542) interest 46 (no other schools) Commits week 14, about time you sonofa . SS Karl Farmer ** (1548) interest 32 (no other schools) Commits week 14, as expected here, did I mention dumb and a shitty tackler yet? WR Miguel Williams ** (1341) interest 36 (no other schools) Commits week 15, again I was confident about him, nothing sexy, but depth. G Norman Harbin ** (1385) interest 46 (no other schools) Commits week 15, this could actually turn out to be a solid get. TE Todd Thorne ** (1392) interest 29 (no other schools) Commits week 15, he was only recruited for depth all along, but glad we got him. QB Richard Kolb ** (1340) interest 30 (no other schools) Commits week 16, the additions of him and Mark Lear will give us some options in the coming seasons at QB. QB Mark Lear *** (1244) interest 10 (no other schools) Commits week 16, another under the radar kid, but not much better than Kolb from first glance, still a good pickup after we lose Leigh. RB Victor Earle ** (1355) interest 33 (no other schools) Commits week 16, with Curry getting an offer from Louisville, no point chasing him still, hello to plan B, probably nothing more than a depth player. CB Rafael Morrill *** (791) Interest 1 (No other schools) Commits week 16, with Dockery as good as gone, we find this guy in Alaska and steal him at the wire. He adds to an already strong position. LB James Ferguson *** (509) interest 1 (No other schools) Commits week 16, he decides to not wait and pulls the trigger. Another huge pickup from off the beaten path, he and Morrill save an otherwise very ho-hum year for recruiting. DT Johnny Denning ** (1251) interest 33 (no other schools) Commits week 16, a project for sure, but he could develop over time. QB Ken Leigh *** (1116) interest 13 (Commit to Virginia Tech week 15) When his next offer finally came it was good, dont blame him. G Andrew Savage *** (1185) interest 3 (Commit to Western Kentucky week 16) No surprise, uncle Brian will be happy. RB Joshua Curry *** (1089) interest 14 (Commit to Louisville week 16) We chased him as long as we could, good luck in the ACC. CB Salvatore Dockery *** (1030) interest 8 (Commit to Louisiana Lafayette week 16 ) I think losing him was a blessing as I was able to find Morrill. LB Francis Franklin *** (938) interest 8 (Commit to Louisiana Tech week 16) The Bulldogs beat out Cincinnati and Toledo for his services, surprising since Toledo finished 12-0 and ranked 6th (The only FBS unbeaten) but again we gained form this loss. Not a great class, but not terrible. We only lose 7 of our offered targets, but all were reaches anyway. Overall we have commitments from three 3 stars, eleven 2 stars and a single 1 star, with one scholarship still open. We did get stronger on defense for sure and pretty much just added depth on the offensive side, though I am hoping someone like Harbin or Williams can surprise. |

Season Recap 2018 – Final Record 4-8 Prestige 30
Doubled our wins from 2017, but still feeling flat as we were inconsistent and our big win over a P5 team was against 0-12 Boston College, hardly shout worthy. Then there was the loss to Army, which if we had done what we were supposed to, would have made it a successful season at 5-7. Still, there is lots to be optimistic about as we were young and we had some freshman step up (Looking at you Leon Belcher) for the second straight season. The roster is gradually turning over and in the next year or two I look forward to drubbing teams like Army with my players, and getting that signature win against a team like Bowling Green that actually went to a bowl after we had them on the ropes. Darryl Lavigne improved a ton from his junior to senior seasons, though he still made crushing mistakes at key times. He will be missed regardless as next season we will be starting either a sophomore or a freshman under center, meaning our anemic run game, which average just 80.1 yards a game will need to pick it up. We get all starters but one back up front and have a talented incoming freshman in Victor Earle, who should push incumbent Seth Wooley for the job. Our longest run of the season was 19 yards, so no home run threat at all! Defensively we had no pass rush at all, which put a lot of strain on a fairly talented secondary. The linebacking corps is in good stead with both Harry Zeigler (89 tackles) and Donald Ramirez (65 tackles) back. We also have an all-independent 1st team punter in Vincent Anderson, 48.9 avg, 15 inside the 20, returning. . Code:

The class is ranked 91st and while last year we had more 3 star recruits (5 to 3), this year we had more top 1000 players (2 to 1) and more in the top 1500 (11 to 8) so it may be just a bit better overall in terms of strength. Time will tell. Looks like you are recruiting well enough that you'll soon improve from terrible to merely bad. Outstanding, esp. on the LB front with Ferguson joining Ziegler and co.

Been fortunate with linebackers, but I need to get a running game going. It is looking like redshirt freshman James Kelly will be the QB and he is faster than any of the running backs, so that may help. Not a very strong arm though. Ferguson will be starting for sure, 4th fastest player on the team. I will be blitzing more with him able to come off the edge Last edited by BYU 14 : 01-18-2017 at 03:51 PM. |

2019 Roster and position outlook (Starters in bold, red shirts in red)
Code:
James Kelly won the job in camp quite decisively and true freshman Richard Kolb drew raves for his football smarts and will continue to compete with Felton Haight for the backup spot, which allows us to redshirt top QB recruit Mark Lear. Kelly adds a dual threat aspect to our offense, which will hopefully add some rushing yards as we can’t pin our season on a freshman’s arm. Code:
In a complete shocker, true freshman Victor proved a capable all around back and in doing so unseats incumbent two year starter Seth Wooley as our #1. We will likely spread carries out between him and Wooley, but there is no doubt Early, who was plan C in recruiting, turned out to be a nice little pickup, who can hopefully break a run longer than last year’s top scamper of 19 yards. Code:
I was feeling good about the line last year and they failed to open many holes for our backs, but I maintain that optimism for this season, if only because of improved depth. The bookends Reginald ‘Biggie’ Small and Theo Sumner are back at the tackle spots for the third straight season, but sophomore Ray Wright pushed Sumner to the limit for the job and will get substantial reps at both tackle spots this year. Herbert Perrin returns at one guard spot, while the competition for the other spot yields another true freshman starter in Norman Harbin, who is strong as a bull and just needs to polish his technique. Center sees last year’s starter Mathew Goodrich overtaken by redshirt freshman Dan McCall, who improved by leaps and bounds over the off-season. Code:
We have a regular revolving door at TE as Charles Young edges out Robert Kerns to win back the job he lost last year after starting as a freshman. At wideout both starters return and Schneider will get a lot more targets now that Tyrell Cox has graduated. Troy Mitchell is the better of our incoming freshman, but I decide to red shirt him to stagger eligibility, meaning his running mate Miguel Williams will be the #3 target and gives us a solid possession guy with the best hands on the team. Code:
Yet another true freshman works his way into the starting lineup as Johnny Denning earns a spot alongside returning starter Paul King. Denning is strong and will be called upon to plug the interior gaps, while King is more suited to getting a good pass rush up the middle. Both starting defensive ends are back in Stanton McNeely and Jay Rash, though neither are particularly adept at rushing the passer. Christopher Ortiz will get some long yardage reps at DE as he is our most athletic, but recruiting a pass rusher this year is a priority. Code:
What was once a weakness is now the strength of the defense thanks to the addition of highly regarded James Ferguson, who can fly. In fact, this group has speed to burn as last year’s freshman sensation Harry Zeigler can run as well and will cone again be expected to be the heart of the defense. Three year starter Donald Ramirez is not the athlete that Zeigler and Ferguson are, but is a cerebral player, who will be a coach on the field. Red shirting and waiting in the wings is George Orr, who is another speedy backer, who will compete with William Barney next season to replace Ramirez. Code:
Incoming Freshman Rafael Morrill blows the coaches away during camp and jumps in front of Brian Freeman on the depth chart at corner, where he will start opposite Jose Taylor, to give us two 3 star players at the position. Freeman will be the primary nickel and is still going to get plenty of rotation time. The starting safeties will remain the same as James Whitley and Robert Watkins return, though redshirt freshman Daniel Galloway will see plenty of time as the heir apparent to Whitley. 2018 Schedule Code:
A much nicer schedule overall than last year as we have winnable games against Idaho, Georgia Southern, Boston College (unbelievable how bad they have become), FIU and Troy. Akron and Buffalo are swing games that we could get if the Football Gods smile on us. All the rest will range from losses to beat downs, which is par for the course. So best case scenario 6-6, which would be a program record for wins and potentially boost our prestige finally, which would be a step or two on the long road to respect. 7-5 would get me coach of the year votes and 5-7 would still be more than satisfying. The wildcard will be seven freshmen starting, guess that could be looked at as good for the future or bad from an experience/depth standpoint. I like to think of it as the fruits of good recruiting! Awesome and thanks. I think you will enjoy it, still some kinks to work out, but has great potential and still giving me lots of enjoyment. Last edited by BYU 14 : 01-19-2017 at 02:52 PM. |

September 3rd, 2019 UMass 0-0 vs Connecticut 0-0
UMass: Offense Scoring N/A (), Rushing (), Passing () Defense Scoring N/A (), Rushing (), Passing () UConn: Offense Scoring N/A (), Rushing (), Passing () Defense Scoring N/A (), Rushing (), Passing () All-time record vs opponent: 0-2 Injury report: None The new season is underway with a good test for how much we have improved, as I did not list UConn as one of our likely wins as they are coming off a 5-7 season and actually went 8-5 and won a bowl game in 2017. The game is tight in the first half as both teams have opening game jitters. We sandwich an 8 yard run by Husky TB Carl Jones (18-96 on the day) with two field goals by new kicker Donald Scott (36 and 33 yards) and trail 7-6 at the half. Jose Taylor intercepts William Harkins to open the second half and we cap a 9 play drive with a 13 yard pass from James Kelly to Leon Belcher to go up 14-7 after the 2 point conversion. UConn comes right back and ties it on Jones second TD run from 11 yards out to tie, but the defense buckles down and it is all UMass from then on as Seth Wooley closes the 3rd quarter with an 11 yard TD scamper of his own. The nail comes with 2:52 left when David Schneider hauls in a 49 yard strike from Kelly to close the scoring. Defensively we give up 205 yards on the ground, but rack up 195 of our own, led by Frosh phenom Victor Earle (19-117) with Wooley chipping in 58 yards on 14 carries. Our freshman QB is inconsistent, but gets it done as Kelly ends up 14-32, 209 yards 2 TD and 1 Int. Defensively we hold William Harkins to 11-27, 179 and pick him off twice, with James Whitley getting the second one. Zeigler is back to his old ways with 10 tackle and a forced fumble, while true freshman LB James Ferguson tallies 8 tackles. David Schneider is our leading receiver with 4 catches for 101 yards to go with his TD catch. This is a huge win to start the year! Final Score: UMass 28 UConn 14 Recruiting: Scholarships offered 2 of 20 C Randall Marshall ** (1523) interest 16 (no other schools) Strictly an offer for depth as we are set at C for the next three seasons. P Jacinto McGehee * (2865) interest 41 (no other schools) This is a need, so I get an offer out early Commits: N/A Lost: N/A We have 20 schollies to fill so I am starting slow with the offers to see how interest goes as I want to really try and nail down 4-8 three star or high two star recruits this season. Note: I am not going to advance more than a week or so past this point as the last patch introduced an issue affecting interest levels, so I dont want to get too far and possible screw up recruits. |

I know you mentioned that the long gain for your team for the year was 19 yards. Are your opponents seeing the same thing? That was one of the things I mentioned upon the game's release - long gains on runs were extremely rare.

I am seeing them at about the normal RL pace. I already have two 21 yard runs this season, UMass just doesn't have speedy backs. Victor Earle is a power runner and it seems that type game wide have more consistent positive games, just not as many long runs. I looked at the top rushers from last season and their longest runs, 1st through 10th are 56, 79, 83, 90, 95, 67, 21, 72, 50, 49. The top five after two games this season have the following long runs. 78, 87, 59, 77, 17. The number 5 rusher with the 17 yard run ran for over 1400 yards in 13 games last season and his longest run that years was only 20. Overall, if anything I think rushing yards per team is a little bit high. It's getting there though. Thank you, glad you are enjoying it. |

September 10th, 2019 UMass 1-0 at Idaho 0-1
UMass: Offense Scoring 28.0 (55), Rushing 195.0 (47), Passing 220.0 (67) Defense Scoring 14.0 (46), Rushing 205.0 (87), Passing 179.0 (50) Idaho: Offense Scoring 0.0 (128), Rushing 3.0 (112), Passing 43 (112) Defense Scoring 41.0 (95), Rushing 271.0 (111), Passing 273.0 (85) All-time record vs opponent: 3-3 Injury report: DT Robert Curtis Probable (fatigue), T Kurt Kay Out (Sprained Wrist) How the hell do you develop fatigue when you got next to zero PT in the opener? Stay away from the PS4 and sleep! There is no reason in the world we shouldnt destroy these guys, which is exactly why I am nervous. James Kelly quickly allays my fears with a pair of 1st quarter TD passes to Ezra Garber (10 yards) and David Schneider (18 yards). He tosses his third of the game in the second quarter finding TE Robert Kerns from 7 yards out and we take a 21-3 lead into the half as all the Vandals can manage is a 22 yd FG from Spencer Rico. The third quarter sees Idaho close the gap courtesy of a Gergorio McGhee to William Aguirre hook that covers 11 yards. As the 4th quarter starts, Leon Belcher gets behind the Idaho secondary to haul in a 66 yard scoring strike, before Karl Farmer closes the scoring with a 23 yard pick six. All in all a total team effort to go to 2-0 and although James Kelly (12-21, 235 yards) does not complete a high percentage right now, he has a penchant for the big play as his four TD passes demonstrate. He now has a 6-1 TD/Int ratio in the early season and is making people forget about Darryl Lavigne. We spread the carries out nicely today as Victor Earle (13-95), Seth Wooley (12-71) and Donald Neil (14-40) all get double figure touches. Leon Belcher only hauls in two passes, but they go for 126 yards, a glossy 63.0 YPC average. Freshman CB Rafael Morrill gets his first career interception, while Harry Zeigler again paces the D in tackles with 8 as we hold Idaho to 45 yards rushing. Final Score: UMass 35 Idaho 10 Recruiting: Scholarships offered 20 of 20 RB Jason Witcher *** (1157) interest 10 (no other schools) Agile and has good hands, more of a scatback FB Jackson Toney ** (1558) interest 16 (no other schools) We lose a FB this year and I want to carry 3 TE Kelvin Lattimore *** (1099) interest 3 (no other schools) A real reach here and I have a solid plan B, plus we are in good shape at this position so nothing to lose. WR Ronald Loftin *** (1095) interest 1 (no other schools) We graduate 3 WRs this season, so shooting for the stars with this one. WR Robert Seymour ** (1327) interest 11 (no other schools) Much more likely to get him and I do want to sign 2 WR, so showing love to a couple others. C Randall Marshall ** (1523) interest 15 (no other schools) He will be the only center I pursue, so hoping he will grow to like us. G Andre Kilgore *** (1239) interest 2 (no other schools) My reach pick, guy is beastly strong. G Bruce Irons ** (1317) interest 12 (no other schools) I am good signing either one or two guards and he grades out as athletic. T Paul Watts ** (1330) interest 19 (no other schools) I had a higher rated T targeted, but his early interest is good, so he gets the schollie offer. P Jacinto McGehee * (2865) interest 40 (no other schools) At interest this high so early I am thinking he is a lock. DT Ruben Todd *** (1192) interest 1 (Connecticut) Not real likely with UConn in the mix, but hopefully he watched our win over them. DT Young Christian ** (1369) interest 14 (No other schools) Besides the cool name, he is one we have a good shot, but I really want to sign 2 this cycle. DE Clarence Huntington *** (1041) interest 4 (no other schools) Probably one we lose, but I want two so I am shooting high on him. DE Malcolm McSwain ** (1374) interest 10 (no other schools) Another we should be able to swing as time goes on, fast and agile, could be the rush end we need so badly. LB Leonard Pugh *** (1241) interest 3 (no other schools) I only need one LB, so shooting for another three star, while maintaining a solid back up. LB Bryan Vogt ** (1353) interest 20 (no other schools) Good early interest and if he is the only one we sign I will be fine. CB Columbus Miller *** (1222) interest 2 (no other schools) If nothing else, this class has some cool names. CB Eddie Glass ** (1392) interest 8 (no other schools) No good feel on him yet, but is a good guy for depth. SS Curtis George ** (1297) interest 11 (no other schools) The only SS I am pursuing, so I hope that factors in for him. FS Miguel Bunch ** (1609) interest 15 (no other schools) Only want depth here and at his rating I think we should be a lock. FS Glen Gay ** (1668) interest 9 (no other schools) See above, not really trying to get an impact player here this year, but both these guys would be adequate. Commits: N/A Lost: N/A All offers out and way too early to make too many predictions, but I like what we have on the board and think we can land most of them, though some are some definite long shots. Side Note: The speed at which interest accumulates was adjusted in the patch, so you will see it grow much slower and in some cases remain low. This is a good thing in my opinion as it will add some more unpredictability and risk. |

September 17th, 2019 UMass 2-0 vs Georgia Southern 0-1
UMass: Offense Scoring 31.5 (59), Rushing 203.5 (40), Passing 241.0 (61) Defense Scoring 12.0 (21), Rushing 125.0 (43), Passing 241.5 (70) GSU: Offense Scoring 17.0 (92), Rushing 42.0 (118), Passing 264 (46) Defense Scoring 34.0 (82), Rushing 165.0 (65), Passing 286.0 (100) All-time record vs opponent: 1-0 Injury report: DT Robert Curtis Probable (fatigue), FB Chad Ponder Probable (fatigue), WR Miguel Williams Questionable (fatigue), T Kurt Kay Doubtful (Sprained Wrist), RB Victor Earle Out (Sprained Wrist) More with the fatigue, guess I need to dial back training. On a serious note, have Earle on the sidelines will hurt! Break up the Minutemen!! Straight to the point here as this is probably the most complete game we have played in my tenure. Things start well on our first drive as James Kelly hits David Schneider, who is showing much more than he did his freshman year, on a 9 yard slant to jump up 7-0. Kelly chucks two more TD passes in the second quarter finding Charles Young from 4 yards out, before dialing long distance with Leon Belcher answering for an 86 yard hookup. Donald Scott adds to 40+ yard field goals and we take a 27-0 lead into the half. Things are going so well that Kelly is on the bench early in the 3rd quarter and Richard Kolb gets into the action tossing two TD passes to Melvin Najera that both cover 18 yards in the second half. Overall we rack up 430 yards of total offense and hold Georgia Southern to 193 overall, including only 2 of 18 on 3rd down conversions. In just over a half James Kelly throws for 199 yards and 3 TDs, with no picks, but is only 10-21, which is the only chink in his armor right now as he protects the ball and makes big plays. In relief Kolb is 8-15, 109 yards and 2 TDs and Seth Wooley fills in admirable for an injured Victor Earle, rushing for 84 yards on 18 carries. Leon Belcher continues to average obscene yards per catch, grabbing 4 balls for 144 yards, with Melvin Najera leads the team with 5 catches for 85 yards to go with his 2 TD catches. Defensively Harry Zeigler again leads the way with 7 tackles and Donald Ramirez chips in 6 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 PD and 1 Int as Mr. do everything. We are ranked 33rd in the country heading into a rematch with Boston College, who will be amped to pay us back for last season. September 24th, 2019 UMass 3-0 vs Boston College 1-0
UMass: Offense Scoring 34.7 (51), Rushing 176.3 (60), Passing 263.3 (48) Defense Scoring 8.0 (7), Rushing 109.0 (29), Passing 199.7 (37) BC: Offense Scoring 41.0 (29), Rushing 78.0 (108), Passing 370 (8) Defense Scoring 35.0 (85), Rushing 182.0 (74), Passing 279.0 (95) All-time record vs opponent: 1-3 Injury report: DT Robert Curtis Probable (fatigue), FB Chad Ponder Probable (fatigue), WR Miguel Williams Questionable (fatigue), William Qualls Probable (Fatigue), Theodore Whelan Probable (Fatigue), T Kurt Kay Probable (Sprained Wrist), RB Victor Earle Doubtful (Sprained Wrist) Dialed training back and we are still sleepy, Earle is almost sure to miss this game. Injuries going in already have us hampered and we lose Harry Zeigler to a sprained ankle in the first quarter to add to the misery. Couple that with an unwarranted feeling of confidence since we upset them last year and you can only guess what happens next. BC is still a P5 team and they remind us of that by shredding our previously stalwart defense as we get no pass rush and they shred us for 305 yards passing and another 149 on the ground, taking advantage of Zeiglers absence. We spend the first three quarters getting bullied as BC enters the 4th with a 24-0 lead behind three James Garcias TD passes as the BC QB finishes 10-18 for 219 yards before sitting in the 4th. We finally wake up in the final quarter and manage to win the 4th 14-7 as James Kelly (16-31, 167, 1 TD) hits Melvin Najera from 12 yards out, before Seth Wooley (19-61) closes the scoring with a 4 yard run with 42 seconds left in the game. James Morgan led BC with 16 carries for 112 yards as big play are the order of the day for the Eagles as they only amass 14 first downs (11 for us). The big star for the good guys is our punter Vincent Anderson, who punts 11 times for a 48.6 average and puts 3 down inside the 20. Defensively, Zieglers replacement William Barney is one of five Minutemen to record 5 tackles, while DT Paul King, who also had 5 stops, recorded our only sack. Two weeks to lick our wounds now and get healthy as the potent BYU offense awaits us. Final Score: Boston College 31 UMass 14 Recruiting: Scholarships offered 20 of 20 RB Jason Witcher *** (1157) interest 6 (Connecticut) We continue to lag behind UConn significantly, about ready to abandon him FB Jackson Toney ** (1558) interest 46 (no other schools) Nothing great about him but intelligence, not a real important trait for a FB TE Kelvin Lattimore *** (1099) interest 14 (no other schools) Riding it out as option two has decent interest if he falls through WR Ronald Loftin *** (1095) interest 13 (no other schools) Going to hope he stays under the radar WR Robert Seymour ** (1327) interest 21 (Connecticut) Thinking he is definitely favoring UConn at this point C Randall Marshall ** (1523) interest 39 (no other schools) A little drop in interest, but still feel good about him G Andre Kilgore *** (1239) interest 12 (no other schools) Would REALLY love to land him, will ride it until we get competition G Bruce Irons ** (1317) interest 26 (no other schools) - Bumpingup my recruiting of him, we will see if we get a jump in interest next week T Paul Watts ** (1330) interest 52 (no other schools) - Local kid and his interest continues to grow, if we get him he will have time to get stronger P Jacinto McGehee * (2865) interest 94 (no other schools) Nothing further to add on him, he will be a Minuteman DT Ruben Todd *** (1192) interest 8 (Connecticut) Still holding our offer for now DT Young Christian ** (1369) interest 34 (no other schools) Based on scouting he could be a hidden gem DE Anthony Archuleta *** (1168) interest 10 (no other schools) - Pulled Huntingtons offer, conceding him to UConn. LB Bryan Vogt ** (1353) interest 60 (no other schools) Scouting him heavily this week due to his high interest CB Columbus Miller *** (1222) interest 8 (no other schools) Strong and fast, but a terrible tackler, as long as he can cover, hoping he falls CB Eddie Glass ** (1392) interest 27 (no other schools) Hoping his interest would have jumped, but still feel we should get him SS Curtis George ** (1297) interest 20 (Connecticut) Another player UConn decides to jump on, stay in your damn state FS Miguel Bunch ** (1609) interest 37 (no other schools) Staying steady and I am not worried about losing him, unless of course his home state Huskies jump in FS Glen Gay ** (1668) interest 28 (no other schools) A little interest jump, dont see us losing him Commits: N/A Lost: N/A No real developments of note again. We have two straight byes coming up, so we will be hitting the recruiting trail hard in hopes of getting some good swings. |

October 15th, 2019 UMass 3-1 vs BYU 4-2
UMass: Offense Scoring 29.5 (65), Rushing 152.5 (78), Passing 243.5 (59) Defense Scoring 13.8 (8), Rushing 119.0 (30), Passing 226.0 (53) BYU: Offense Scoring 30.5 (59), Rushing 145.2 (83), Passing 285.2 (33) Defense Scoring 27.8 (62), Rushing 110.5 (21), Passing 276.3 (101) All-time record vs opponent: 1-3 Injury report: C Dan McCall Out (Stress Fracture, Foot), RB Victor Earle Probable (Sprained Wrist), LB Harry Zeigler Probable (Sprained Ankle) Still have 6 players fatigued but not even listing them, this is football and training is as dialed back as I am making it. Hopefully Zeigler and Earle can go, we need them! Defense is the strength of both teams, though I give their ranking more credence due to SOS. Sure enough, they roar out of the gates to take a 10-0 lead after the 1st quarter on a 52 yard bomb from James Coughlin to Charles Moreno and a 48 yard John Bello field goal. On this day however our freshmen signal callers play like vets as we get on the board early in the 2nd on a 3 yard scramble by James Kelly, with a 14 yard pass from Kelly to the emerging David Schneider sandwiching a 35 yard FG by James Kelly and we lead at the half 17-10! I am nervous as the second half starts, but we continue to play solid defense and Richard Kolb, in for a series for James Kelly at QB as the latter gets shaken up, goes 3 for 3 and caps the drive with a 15 yard TD strike to Leon Belcher as we take a 24-10 lead into the final quarter. It is inevitable that the Cougars will rally and they do as Coughlin finds Paul Anderson behind the coverage for another 52 yard TD hook up. Then in what proves to be a pivotal moment, Donald Scott drills his second FG from 28 yards out, with the Cougars answering quickly on a 3 yard run by Fernando Bilodeau to cut our lead to 3 with 7:26 left. We turn it over on our next possession, but force a stop on downs, before going on an epic 14 play drive that consumes nearly 5 minutes and ends in a 36 yard miss by Scott, which leaves BYU no time on the clock. We play BYU even, being outgained by only 7 yards (417 410) and overcoming a 3-2 turnover deficit. Victor Earle and Harry Zeigler both play and make a huge difference as Earle tallies 103 yards on 29 carries and Zeigler leads the team with 9 tackles. Schneider (93 yards) and Belcher (65 yards) both haul in 5 balls in a huge win for the program! Final Score: UMass 27 BYU 24 Recruiting: Scholarships offered 20 of 20 RB Bradley Gibson ** (1405) interest 26 (no other schools) Witcher is gone and I expect a big jump in interest next week now that we have offered, this is a depth need only FB Jackson Toney ** (1558) interest 52 (no other schools) Slight gain for him, thinking we are a close to a lock now TE Kelvin Lattimore *** (1099) interest 14 (no other schools) Still holding out hope and plan B Carl Beckman has 28 interest, but is one we should land if we have to fall back WR Ronald Loftin *** (1095) interest 16 (no other schools) Slight gain for this solid possession guy, who would make a nice compliment to Belcher and Schneider WR Robert Seymour ** (1327) interest 24 (Connecticut) Slight bump in interest, but the crappy UConn program still the favorite C Randall Marshall ** (1523) interest 44 (no other schools) Getting close to being able to count on a commit for him (knock on wood) G Andre Kilgore *** (1239) interest 19 (no other schools) Good 7 point jump, may our early love will pay off G Bruce Irons ** (1317) interest 29 (no other schools) - Thought we would be a little more favorable, but still the leader for him T Paul Watts ** (1330) interest 56 (no other schools) - Looking solid for him, great technique, just weak as I mentioned last week P Jacinto McGehee * (2865) interest 90 (no other schools) Our next Punter DT Ruben Todd *** (1192) interest 10 (Connecticut) I am bringing him in for an interview in a last ditch attempt DT Young Christian ** (1369) interest 35 (no other schools) Liking his potential more and more, fingers crossed DE Anthony Archuleta *** (1168) interest 16 (no other schools) - Still out there and he is a nice athletic player, but he could use some more speed DE Malcolm McSwain ** (1374) interest 36 (no other schools) The faster of the two DEs we are after, so I really want him more over the higher rated Archuleta LB Leonard Pugh *** (1241) interest 6 (Connecticut) - Dont know why I am still chasing him LB Bryan Vogt ** (1353) interest 59 (no other schools) Scouting shows he is fast, smart and a good tackler, we can work with that CB Columbus Miller *** (1222) interest 14 (no other schools) He jumped up a little in interest, though still a long shot CB Eddie Glass ** (1392) interest 31 (no other schools) This guy can fly and would be a nice addition on the back end SS Curtis George ** (1297) interest 22 (Connecticut) Friggin Huskies, not looking like we will win this one FS Miguel Bunch ** (1609) interest 41 (no other schools) Smart, agile and slow, great FS Glen Gay ** (1668) interest 39 (no other schools) Huge interest jump, another who can run, but not much else Commits: N/A Lost: RB Jason Witcher *** (1157) interest 6 (Committed to Connecticut week 7) Not shocked we lost him to the Huskies, but they are currently 0-6 this season do good luck there buddy. The two straight byes helped a little bit in recruiting, we lose someone I thought we would and he will help UConn, but screw him now. Vogt is the sleeper of this class and our chances with him look good, as I continue to look for those 2 star gems. |

October 22nd, 2019 UMass 4-1 at Florida International 2-5
UMass: Offense Scoring 29.5 (65), Rushing 152.5 (78), Passing 243.5 (59) Defense Scoring 13.8 (8), Rushing 119.0 (30), Passing 226.0 (53) FIU: Offense Scoring 11.3 (117), Rushing 97.3 (110), Passing 127.3 (123) Defense Scoring 48.3 (123), Rushing 237.4 (117), Passing 256.0 (82) All-time record vs opponent: 2-2 Injury report: G Richard Clanton Out (Sprained Ankle), C Dan McCall Questionable (Stress Fracture Foot), LB Harry Zeigler Probable (Sprained Ankle) , down to only two fatigued players, babies. On paper a major mismatch, but I am worried about a letdown as the whistle blows. My fears are somewhat allayed as we get out to a 10-0 lead in the 1st quarter on a 33 yard Donald Scott FG and an 89 yard bomb from James Kelly to Leon Belcher. From there things get sluggish and we only lead 10-3 at halftime and I am worried that we are letting them hang around. Finally, CB Rafael Morris gives us a spark with a 68 yard punt return in the 3rd, which leads to 27-3 lead before FIU gets into the end zone on an 8 yard pass from Bud Goodin (14-33, 186, 1 TD, 1 Int) to Michael Zamora. We close the scoring on an 8 yard Seth Wooley run to cruise home with a comfortable win and a franchise record 5th win!! Despite the inconsistency it is a good win, with the only disappointment being that we allowed FIU Williams Hart to get 110 yards on 19 carries as our run defense has a bit of let down. For the good guys James Kelly 15-27, 241 yards, 1 TD, 0 Int has another solid day and now has 12 TD passes to only 2 Int. He has been really impressive for a freshman and will hold all of our passing records when done. Seth Wooley leads the ground game with 10 carries for 92 yards and a score, while Victor Earle chips in 69 yards on 13 carries. Leon Belcher has 5 catches for 141 yards and the defense is led by our young linebacking corps as both Zeigler and true frosh Ferguson get 6 tackles. Final Score: UMass 34 FIU 10 Recruiting: Scholarships offered 20 of 20 RB Bradley Gibson ** (1405) interest 28 (no other schools) Not the interest jump I hoped for, but again this is not a need position, he is a power back FB Jackson Toney ** (1558) interest 53 (no other schools) Holding steady, he is very athletic for a FB, can catch TE Kelvin Lattimore *** (1099) interest 14 (no other schools) Still nothing to report here, strong and agile, poor hands WR Ronald Loftin *** (1095) interest 19 (no other schools) Encouraged that is hs almost as interested as the two star we offered, though we still have no competition WR Robert Seymour ** (1327) interest 22 (Connecticut) Thinking we will lose him to UConn, I have backup plans C Randall Marshall ** (1523) interest 47 (no other schools) Strong and smart, he will make a nice addition if we hold on G Andre Kilgore *** (1239) interest 21 (no other schools) Another small jump and still no other serious suitors G Bruce Irons ** (1317) interest 31 (no other schools) A small jump with him as well, but he is dumb as a rock T Paul Watts ** (1330) interest 57 (no other schools) close to locking this guy up I think, and we can afford to develop him P Jacinto McGehee * (2865) interest 90 (no other schools) No clue why he is just not committing DT Young Christian ** (1369) interest 39 (no other schools) I ditch Reuben Todd before we lose him and will focus here, great tackler, needs to get more athletic DE Anthony Archuleta *** (1168) interest 19 (no other schools) A slight gain and still someone I hope will slip to us DE Malcolm McSwain ** (1374) interest 38 (no other schools) Still hopeful we get our speed guy, but he is a bad tackler LB Leonard Pugh *** (1241) interest 6 (Connecticut) I am a glutton for punishment still hanging on LB Bryan Vogt ** (1353) interest 62 (no other schools) Really happy with his interest as we get closer to locking him up CB Columbus Miller *** (1222) interest 13 (no other schools) I admit, I am staying on him for the name at this point, but he is a helluva CB too CB Eddie Glass ** (1392) interest 35 (no other schools) Hands are bad, but ads mentioned last week, he has blazing speed SS Curtis George ** (1297) interest 21 (Connecticut) Might have to start looking at a plan B here FS Miguel Bunch ** (1609) interest 45 (no other schools) Getting closer with him, just no attributes jump out FS Glen Gay ** (1668) interest 39 (no other schools) I boost the recruiting push for him, I think he may be the better option of the two Commits: N/A Lost: RB Jason Witcher *** (1157) interest 6 (Committed to Connecticut week 7) Not shocked we lost him to the Huskies, but they are currently 0-6 this season do good luck there buddy. Not a lot of movement here, I expect the chips to start falling over the next two weeks. Also realizing that we could be on track for our first bowl invite ever, scary! |

If next year equals never, then yeah An added note of interest: After we upset them, BYU went on to dismantle previously undefeated and #3 ranked Utah 37-7 this week, so maybe there is more to this team than you would think. The polls don't agree through as we are currently ranked 42. Last edited by BYU 14 : 02-18-2017 at 12:59 PM. |

October 29th, 2019 UMass 5-1 vs Akron 2-6
UMass: Offense Scoring 29.8 (68), Rushing 153.5 (82), Passing 249.2 (59) Defense Scoring 14.8 (7), Rushing 121.7 (24), Passing 227.5 (45) Akron: Offense Scoring 21.8 (91), Rushing 133.5 (103), Passing 175.9 (112) Defense Scoring 33.8 (82), Rushing 227.9 (112), Passing 196.3 (13) All-time record vs opponent: 3-3 Injury report: G Richard Clanton Out (Sprained Ankle), C Dan McCall Questionable (Stress Fracture Foot), QB James Kelly Probable (Pulled Hamstring). Kelly should be fine, but even if he is not Kolb has been solid off the bench, especially for a true freshman. Their pass defense worries me and with two linemen down I worry we will run as well as we need to, to win this one. The one thing I am beginning to realize with this team is that somebody always seems to step up when we need it and today it was a stingy defense that played tough on a day we shot ourselves in the foot offensively by committing 3 turnovers, including 2 fumbles that tarnished an otherwise very solid effort on the ground. Akron truck first on a 22 yard field goal by Richard Ogden, but James Kelly (17-30, 231, 2 TD, 1 Int) fired right back hitting David Schneider from 50 yards out to complete the first half scoring as we led 7-3 at the half. The third quarter only saw a 20 yard field goal from Donald Scott, which made it still anybodies game going into the 4th. After trading field goals to start the final quarter, Schneider got loose again and hauled in a 68 yard TD strike from Kelly to give us a little bit of breathing room. From there we pounded the ball with Victor Earle (24-123) and Seth Wooley (14-98) punishing the Akron defense. Schneider ended up with 5 grabs for 169 yards to go with his 2 TD catches, as the defense held the Zips to 185 total yards and stymied Akron QB James Hatfield (10-35, 93), in addition to holding them to a paltry 3 for 16 on 3rd down conversions. The gun sounds and for the first time in school history, we are bowl eligible!!! Final Score: UMass 20 Akron 6 Recruiting: Scholarships offered 20 of 20 RB Bradley Gibson ** (1405) interest 31 (no other schools) No movement, but I still think we end up with him at the end FB Jackson Toney ** (1558) interest 56 (no other schools) Another guy holding steady, feel very strong about him TE Kelvin Lattimore *** (1099) interest 22 (no other schools) I am encouraged with the 8 point jump in interest here as he will make a fine extra tackle with his bad hands WR Ronald Loftin *** (1095) interest 17 (no other schools) Interest drops a bit, which likely means other schools are coming on, but have not yet offered WR Robert Seymour ** (1327) interest 26 (Connecticut) We get a bump despite his interest in the Huskies C Randall Marshall ** (1523) interest 47 (no other schools) He is not a very good run blocker, but solid in all other facets G Andre Kilgore *** (1239) interest 19 (no other schools) Drop a bit with him, he is a solid all-around lineman, just not real agile, but it would be nice to steal him G Bruce Irons ** (1317) interest 34 (no other schools) - Continue to gain a bit at a time with him, and he is a road grader run blocking T Paul Watts ** (1330) interest 63 (no other schools) Getting closer and closer to securing his services P Jacinto McGehee * (2865) interest 98 (no other schools) All over but the shouting DT Young Christian ** (1369) interest 41 (no other schools) Starting to feel pretty comfortable about him too, he should start at some point if we get him DE Anthony Archuleta *** (1168) interest 21 (no other schools) Another small gain, but I still think McSwain will be better long term DE Malcolm McSwain ** (1374) interest 37 (no other schools) Still nobody else offering, hopeful he will be in UMass colors LB Bryan Vogt ** (1353) interest 66 (no other schools) Still one of the guys I want most out of this class, we continue to lead LB Mark Walton *** (1178) interest 5 (no other schools) Pipedream for sure, but I have landed a rare gem like him before CB Columbus Miller *** (1222) interest 17 (no other schools) It bodes well every week that goes by with no other offers CB Eddie Glass ** (1392) interest 34 (no other schools) Still in fair enough shape to land this burner SS Curtis George ** (1297) interest 24 (Connecticut) He hasnt signed with UConn yet, who by the way, wont be bowling this season FS Miguel Bunch ** (1609) interest 48 (no other schools) Holding steady and getting closer to him becoming a good possibility FS Glen Gay ** (1668) interest 51 (no other schools) The push in recruiting pays off with a huge jump in interest, now his favorite Commits: N/A Lost: RB Jason Witcher *** (1157) interest 6 (Committed to Connecticut week 7) Not shocked we lost him to the Huskies, but they are currently 0-6 this season do good luck there buddy. LB Leonard Pugh *** (1241) interest 6 (Committed to Connecticut week 10) Again, no shock, in fact it was probably stupid to hang in for so long on him. Lose Pugh, which I expected, but becoming bowl eligible this week more than makes up for that! |

November 5th, 2019 UMass 6-1 at Bowling Green 4-3
UMass: Offense Scoring 28.4 (69), Rushing 169.0 (62), Passing 2252.6 (57) Defense Scoring 13.6 (2), Rushing 117.4 (21), Passing 208.3 (24) BGU: Offense Scoring 32.4 (51), Rushing 238.3 (17), Passing 223.9 (77) Defense Scoring 22.3 (31), Rushing 128.1 (28), Passing 214.4 (29) All-time record vs opponent: 0-4 Injury report: T Kurt Kay Out (Fractured Skull), FB Chad Ponder Out (Fatigue), G Richard Clanton Questionable (Sprained Ankle), C Dan McCall Probable (Stress Fracture Foot). Scary injury for our backup tackle Kay, who will miss the rest of the season and Ponder will be a big loss in the run game form a lead blocking standpoint. This is a real test as both teams have good defenses, though being ranked second in the country in scoring defense should be taken with a grain of salt, given our schedule. Bowling Greens resume is more impressive with 2 of their 3 losses coking to Texas and Notre Dame. Talk about the cruel hand of reality slapping us in the face! As mentioned in the preview, Bowling Greens resume of losses scared me and they were definitely the more battles tested of the teams on the field this day. I have been waiting/dreading the moment all season where James Kelly finally had a freshman moment at QB and boy, did it happen today. Sacked twice, but hurried consistently, Kelly was 19-41, 127 yards and 3 interceptions, ugly! The running game was no better as we were held for a net of 44 yards with Victor Earle 16-39 leading the way. In terms of the game, the Falcons scored on rushing TDs by Robert Landis (4 yards) and Richard McCabe (1 yard) in the first quarter, followed by TD passes by James Klinger of 29 yards (Sal Beaulieu) and 8 yards (Richard McCabe in the second and we were down 28-0 at half en route to one of the lowlights of my regime. A 21 yard pick 6 by Ronald Hollingsworth only added to our misery as Bowling Green racked up 406 total yards, including a 176 on the ground spread between seven Falcon ball carriers. Donald Ramirez racked up 10 tackles on defense, while Vincent Anderson averaged 46.2 yards on 10 punts, to give us the only things resembling a highlight. Final Score: Bowling Green 49 UMass 0 Recruiting: Scholarships offered 20 of 20 RB Bradley Gibson ** (1405) interest 32 (no other schools) Scouting has him locked in as yet another power back, with good hands, fits our mold FB Jackson Toney ** (1558) interest 56 (no other schools) Still holding serve, great speed and hands TE Kelvin Lattimore *** (1099) interest 19 (no other schools) Still a longshot, but no other suitors still, probably due to his hands, does have a nice 65 234 pound frame WR Ronald Loftin *** (1095) interest 22 (no other schools) Pretty fair jump in interest, is a well rounded prospect with good speed and is also 65 WR Robert Seymour ** (1327) interest 23 (Connecticut) Seems as though he is leaning even more to UConn, have some intriguing backup plans in place if he bails C Randall Marshall ** (1523) interest 51 (no other schools) I think we have him pretty much dialed in, again, if only he was a better run blocker G Andre Kilgore *** (1239) interest 19 (no other schools) Still a longshot, but holding on. He is an amazing pass blocker, though only average in the run game G Bruce Irons ** (1317) interest 36 (no other schools) - Staying at 36 interest and as good as Kilgore is at pass pro, he is that good in run blocking, if I could only morph them T Paul Watts ** (1330) interest 59 (no other schools) A slight drop, but we are still #1 and I am saying it now, he is a diamond in the rough P Jacinto McGehee * (2865) interest 98 (no other schools) Just waiting for it to be official DT Young Christian ** (1369) interest 42 (no other schools) Good motor and athletic, he will start for us at some point if landed DE Anthony Archuleta *** (1168) interest 22 (no other schools) Staying on him, though as mentioned last week I actually like McSwain more now since he fits a need DE Malcolm McSwain ** (1374) interest 41 (no other schools) Scouting uncovers the speed rusher trait, which validates my opinion of him LB Bryan Vogt ** (1353) interest 70 (no other schools) Getting closer to landing him, would be another solid addition to an already strong LB corps LB Mark Walton *** (1178) interest 11 (no other schools) Interest doubles, but we will lose him as soon as a more sexy offer comes along CB Columbus Miller *** (1222) interest 16 (no other schools) Still holding my breath, he would be a huge get and is still a huge long shot CB Eddie Glass ** (1392) interest 37 (no other schools) Again the only good thing about him is speed, but speed kills SS Curtis George ** (1297) interest 26 (Connecticut) The more I learn about his skills the less I would mind if UConn lands him FS Miguel Bunch ** (1609) interest 46 (no other schools) To be honest, we are the leader, but I dont see him as a starter with us, ever FS Glen Gay ** (1668) interest 51 (no other schools) See above, I really picked two mediocre guys to pursue at this spot Commits: N/A Lost: RB Jason Witcher *** (1157) interest 6 (Committed to Connecticut week 7) Not shocked we lost him to the Huskies, but they are currently 0-6 this season do good luck there buddy. LB Leonard Pugh *** (1241) interest 6 (Committed to Connecticut week 10) Again, no shock, in fact it was probably stupid to hang in for so long on him. We need a big bounce back from this weeks beatdown as it kind of exposes us to some of the better recruits that might be considering UMass. Buffalo is one of two of our remaining 4 games I think we can win, so fingers crossed. |

November 12th, 2019 UMass 6-2 vs Buffalo 4-4
UMass: Offense Scoring 24.9 (85), Rushing 153.4 (82), Passing 239.4 (65) Defense Scoring 18.0 (14), Rushing 124.8 (25), Passing 211.0 (27) Buffalo: Offense Scoring 22.9 (89), Rushing 180.0 (57), Passing 165.9 (115) Defense Scoring 26.6 (56), Rushing 187.8 (86), Passing 232.3 (57) All-time record vs opponent: 0-3 Injury report: T Kurt Kay Out (Fractured Skull), LB Harry Zeigler Out (Torn Bicep), FB Chad Ponder Questionable (Fatigue), G Richard Clanton Probable (Sprained Ankle), C Dan McCall Probable (Stress Fracture Foot). Obviously the big news is Harry Zeigler, the heart and soul of our defense not only out, but done for the year. This makes us much more vulnerable to a fairly decent Buffalo running game, though thankfully they cant throw to save their lives, so the goal will be to get up early and make them play catch up. This has all the makings of a heartbreaker as we cant finish drives in the first half, settling for field goals of 28, 19 and 24 yards by Donald Scott. Seriously three times inside the 20 (twice inside the 10) and we get this. We also gift them the 3 points on a James Kelly interception, then allow what will be their only sustained drive of the game, capped by a 6 yard Joel Smoot run and we trail 10-9 at the half. Coming out after the half, Victor Earle (25-108) fumbles and they run it back to the 2. Roberto Free punches it in from 2 and it is 17-9. Kelly, who finishes 24-33, 283 yards 1 TD, 1 Int recovers from his early foibles and finds David Schneider down the sideline for a 55 yard score, we go for 2 and it is tied at 17. Scotts 4th field goal gives us the lead, but a special teams lapse leads to a 99 yard TD by Jimmy Pitt on the ensuing kickoff and we trail again 24-20. From here however the defense goes into lockdown mode and Donald Scotts foot owns the 4th quarter as he hits three more field goals from 20, 31 and 56 yards out as we again cant finish a drive. His 7 field goals is a team record, but two short of the NCAA mark of 9, by UConns William DeHart. The defense is lead by DT James Denning, who is a wrecking crew with 11 tackles, 1 TFL and a sack. True frosh James Ferguson also tallies 11 stops filling in nicely for the injured Harry Zeigler and we get a solid gut check win! Final Score: UMass 29 Buffalo 20 Recruiting: Scholarships offered 20 of 20 FB Jackson Toney ** (1558) interest 58 (no other schools) Looking like we will lock him up, a probable starter TE Kelvin Lattimore *** (1099) interest 24 (no other schools) A notable jump of 5 points, perhaps we are gaining since there is no other interest. WR Ronald Loftin *** (1095) interest 23 (no other schools) Would be a diamond for sure, hoping nobody else jumps in late WR Robert Seymour ** (1327) interest 28 (Connecticut) His interest jumps, but still lagging behind UConn. We could actually end up with a poor haul at this spot if we lose him and Loftin C Randall Marshall ** (1523) interest 50 (no other schools) 66 is a pretty long frame for a center, really has tackle length G Andre Kilgore *** (1239) interest 23 (no other schools) Nice little jump for Andre, who would probably be our best pass blocker from day 1 if we steal him. G Bruce Irons ** (1317) interest 35 (no other schools) - Scouting uncovers the athletic blocker trait, which I assume means he is good at getting to the next level T Paul Watts ** (1330) interest 63 (no other schools) Jumped back up and we are getting to the point that he could commit soon P Jacinto McGehee * (2865) interest 96 (no other schools) Alabama is not coming kid DE Anthony Archuleta *** (1168) interest 23 (no other schools) Still not out of the picture, good run stopper, which we already have at this spot DE Malcolm McSwain ** (1374) interest 44 (no other schools) We are still leading and if we get hi he will be our career sack leader LB Bryan Vogt ** (1353) interest 75 (no other schools) I am telling you, if he wasnt 511 and 200, he would have another star and a bunch of teams after him LB Mark Walton *** (1178) interest 10 (no other schools) Man I would love to poach him, would be our first commit ever from Texas CB Columbus Miller *** (1222) interest 17 (no other schools) Still no front runners, though this is normally when a school that lost a kid they liked more will jump in CB Eddie Glass ** (1392) interest 36 (no other schools) Liking him more and more as we will have a couple of years to develop technique if he commits SS Curtis George ** (1297) interest 26 (Connecticut) Still no change and working on 3 star Donald Jolly now as he is still under the radar FS Miguel Bunch ** (1609) interest 49 (no other schools) Still gaining on this roster filler FS Glen Gay ** (1668) interest 58 (no other schools) Big jump for Glen, think he realizes he is luck to have an offer Commits: RB Bradley Gibson ** (1405) interest 32 (no other schools Commit Week 12) A good depth pick up for us, projects as a backup and short yardage back behind Victor Earle DT Young Christian ** (1369) interest 42 (no other schools Commit week 12) I am excited for this commit, he is definitely a starter at some point in his UMass career, great motor and can move for a big guy Lost: RB Jason Witcher *** (1157) interest 6 (Committed to Connecticut week 7) Not shocked we lost him to the Huskies, but they are currently 0-6 this season do good luck there buddy. LB Leonard Pugh *** (1241) interest 6 (Committed to Connecticut week 10) Again, no shock, in fact it was probably stupid to hang in for so long on him. Got the bounce back we needed and our 7th win should probably guarantee us a bowl berth..I hope, have a great shot at number 8 in our final game, which would clinch it. Good getting our first two commits as we enter the home stretch of recruiting, this class should be solid, but I dont see another of those surprise out of our league commits we have landed the last two seasons. |
