This is a pretty even matchup of horrible teams FIU’s lone win is a 48-6 thrashing of 1-6 Texas State and it was expectedly ugly to watch. We went 1912 old school in this one as both teams combined for less than 600 yards of total offense, with neither being able to punch it into the end zone. It is really sad that it looked like our offense would be much improved this year and has in fact almost taken a step back as FIU outgains us 326-267 and accumulates 17 first downs to our 11.

The difference in this one came down to the kickers as both teams attempted a single field goal in each quarter, with our offensive MVP Dewey Hicks connecting from 19, 47, 38 and the game winner from 29 with 50 seconds to go in the game. His counterpart, Randy Jewell missed from 32 yards out in the 2nd quarter and that was the difference. Darryl Lavigne was again mistake prone, going 13-25, for a meager 134 yards and 2 more picks, giving him 10 for the year, which is firmly on pace to surpass last year’s total of 14. The running game was a semi bright spot, as Seth Wooley ran for a season high 98 yards on 21 carries. Defensively I don’t even need to say that Harry Zeigler again led the way with 9 tackles, while CB Bobby Padgett, starting in place of Jose Taylor forced and recovered a key fumble.

LOL, no we still suck. Next year will be interesting with Lavigne gone and Felton Haight and James Kelly competing to replace him. I think either will be in upgrade, especially with out improved receiving corp having another year under their belts.

In terms of this year, the last winnable game is our final one against Texas State, which will come the week after what should be a horrific beatdown at the hands of Nebraska (now 7-1). Games 9 and 10 against Bowling Green (3-5) and Buffalo (4-4) probably won't be as competitive as they once looked to be either.

This one started out wild, before settling into SOS. Akron came out smoking, opening the game with 21 straight points courtesy of the right arm of Kent Land who tosses scoring strikes of 53, 25 and 2 yards. The Minutemen would not lie down (at least not yet) on this day however, as a pair of Darryl Lavigne TD passes to TE Robert Kerns (3 yards) and Frosh WR David Schneider (57 yards), followed by a 44 yard FG from Dewey Hicks had us down 21-17 and back in the hunt.

From there it was all downhill as Land tossed two more TD passes to finish the day 15-27, 310 yards with 5 TD’s, before Thomas Wray (20 carries, 106 yards) capped the scoring off with a 7 yard run as we just couldn’t hang down the stretch. Lavigne had one of his better games, protecting the ball and going 22-38, 273 yards with 2 TD’s and 0 interceptions, but he missed some key throws in the second half. Our running game continued to operate in park, with Seth Wooley logging 44 yards on 12 carries. Kerns had his best day as a collegian grabbing 8 balls for 53 yards to go with his first career TD. Akron did a great job shutting down Leon Belcher, who had but 1 catch for 5 yards.

The Falcons lead 10-0 early in the second quarter and it looks like it could be a long day, but the boys get some fight in them and it stays there the rest of the way. Darryl Lavigne, who will again have a turnover free day, finds Ezra Garber from 5 yards out and we go into half down 10-7. The 3rd quarter features the defenses, until Dewey Hicks connects from 45 yards out with under 3 minutes to go, but Bowling Green comes right back with a quick drive, capped by a 6 yard scamper from Robert Landis (17-110) to lead 17-10 after 3. The Falcons gash us for 303 yards on the ground, to go with 327 through the air, while we manage only 258 TOTAL!

It is all about efficiency though as David Schneider hauls in a 15 yard pass from Lavigne, before we convert a turnover into another TD on Lavigne’s third TD pass, this one from 2 yards out to Leon Belcher and we now lead 24-17 with 6:02 to go! Alas, our hemorrhaging of yards will bite us as BG QB James Klinger says this is all the time he needs and he tosses TD strikes of 38 yards to Craig Roberts and 46 yards to Paul McConnell (Where the hell are our safeties?), the latter coming with just 57 seconds left. It wastes a decent day by Lavigne 20-40, 212 yards, 3 TD, 0 Int that sees Leon Belcher haul in 11 of his passes for 119 yards. Our running game is suck deluxe again, with Wooley the leader gaining 32 yards on 11 carries. Harry Zeigler (who else) tallies 11 tackles to lead the D, Donald Ramirez adds 9, while the “depressed” Bobby Padgett, still subbing for Jose Taylor, gets a pick.

The surprising Bulls come into the game with a winning record, a strong running game and a top 10 pass defense. Just what we need! Well, despite this lofty ranking Darryl Lavigne shreds them early and we get the only score of the first quarter on a 13 yard pass from him to Ezra Garber. From there it is a barn burner into the second half as Buffalo knots it on a 62 yard run by Rodger Cobbs, we jump back up on a Lavigne to Belcher strike covering 5 yards. Buffalo scores the next two as James Trapp hooks up with Keith Walker on 29 and 28 yard TD passes. We tie it again on a 1 yard plunge by Donald Neil and then the wheels comes off.

Buffalo scores the final three touchdowns of the game as our offense bogs down and the defense implodes. They end up outgaining us 525 to 297, which includes almost 300 yards on the ground! Both Joseph Altman (121) and Rodger Cobbs (147) top 100 yards and James Trapp throws for another 225, plus 4 TD’s, though we do pick him off twice. For the good guys Lavigne cools off after his fast start to end up 18-31, 198 yards, 2 TD, 1 Int. Seth Wooley again paces the weak ass ground game 15-61, while SS Robert Watkins breaks Harry Zeiglers run as our leading tackler, getting 8. Starting Sam Donald Ramirez gets one of our picks and reserve corner Charles Kay the other, as we get Buffalo bowl eligible.

I don’t think it’s any secret how this one was going to turn out, so let’s get straight to the carnage. Nebraska did what they needed to do in the first half, outscoring us 45-0 behind a punishing run game that racked up 343 yards and again saw two players Edmund Kuntz (12-130) and Jimmy Homan (15-116) top the century mark. Cornhusker QB Jefferson Rouse played just over half the game, but still managed to chuck 5 TD passes, going 13-23, for 257 yards s the game was really over at the coin toss.

Nebraska really was kind and subbed liberally after halftime, only outscoring us 17-10 after the break, so at least we salvaged some dignity. Their defense held us to 237 yards a and a disheartening 1-13 on 3rd down conversions, which of course gave our punter Vincent Anderson plenty of PT, and he responded averaging 51.1 yards a kick, with 2 inside the 20. Of course this only gave Nebraska more field to pad stats. Apart from that Darryl Lavigne was 20-38, 196 yards, 1 TD, 2 Int. Lavigne has improved on his TD/Int ratio from last year (17/13 currently) and could reach 20 TD passes against Texas State in our finale. Leon Belcher, who hauled in 4 passes for 59 yards now, has 54 receptions for 865 yards and an outside shot to hit 1000 yards with a magical day against the Bobcats next week. I would the true freshman has been our offensive MVP for the year and I am glad he is back for 3 more seasons.

At last, someone with worse numbers on both sides of the ball than us, but losing Zeigler against Nebraska last week will sting. We need to end the season with a win and the team comes out on fire, racing to a 31-6 halftime lead as Darryl Lavigne ends his college career in style, connecting with Leon Belcher (9 yds), Ezra Garber (23 yds) and Tyrell Cox (11 yds) on first half TD passes. Donald Neil adds the other first half score on a 1 yard run. The defense will not miss Harry Zeigler as they go on to hold the Bobcats to 249 yards and only 8 first downs for the game.

On the ground we 131 yards as Allen Amaya gets a season high 62 yards on 12 carries in his final College game. Seth Wooley is banged up and finishes with 3 carries for 24 yards, giving him a team high 537 on the season. We need much more from the run game next year! Five players lead the Defense with 5 tackles each and FS James Whitley forces and recovers his first career fumble. T Reginald Small gets 6 pancakes, giving him 22 for the season and in 19 career starts has only allowed 1 sack, plus he is only a sophomore.

Not a great class, but not terrible. We only “lose” 7 of our offered targets, but all were reaches anyway. Overall we have commitments from three 3 stars, eleven 2 stars and a single 1 star, with one scholarship still open. We did get stronger on defense for sure and pretty much just added depth on the offensive side, though I am hoping someone like Harbin or Williams can surprise.

Season Recap 2018 – Final Record 4-8 Prestige 30

Doubled our wins from 2017, but still feeling flat as we were inconsistent and our big win over a P5 team was against 0-12 Boston College, hardly shout worthy. Then there was the loss to Army, which if we had done what we were supposed to, would have made it a successful season at 5-7. Still, there is lots to be optimistic about as we were young and we had some freshman step up (Looking at you Leon Belcher) for the second straight season. The roster is gradually turning over and in the next year or two I look forward to drubbing teams like Army with my players, and getting that signature win against a team like Bowling Green that actually went to a bowl after we had them on the ropes. Darryl Lavigne improved a ton from his junior to senior seasons, though he still made crushing mistakes at key times. He will be missed regardless as next season we will be starting either a sophomore or a freshman under center, meaning our anemic run game, which average just 80.1 yards a game will need to pick it up. We get all starters but one back up front and have a talented incoming freshman in Victor Earle, who should push incumbent Seth Wooley for the job. Our longest run of the season was 19 yards, so no home run threat at all! Defensively we had no pass rush at all, which put a lot of strain on a fairly talented secondary. The linebacking corps is in good stead with both Harry Zeigler (89 tackles) and Donald Ramirez (65 tackles) back. We also have an all-independent 1st team punter in Vincent Anderson, 48.9 avg, 15 inside the 20, returning.

Signing Day

We sign everyone that committed and end up getting Irving Pace as our second guard as well, so overall a success. The class is ranked 91st and while last year we had more 3 star recruits (5 to 3), this year we had more top 1000 players (2 to 1) and more in the top 1500 (11 to 8) so it may be just a bit better overall in terms of strength. Time will tell.

Been fortunate with linebackers, but I need to get a running game going. It is looking like redshirt freshman James Kelly will be the QB and he is faster than any of the running backs, so that may help. Not a very strong arm though. Ferguson will be starting for sure, 4th fastest player on the team. I will be blitzing more with him able to come off the edge

James Kelly won the job in camp quite decisively and true freshman Richard Kolb drew raves for his football smarts and will continue to compete with Felton Haight for the backup spot, which allows us to redshirt top QB recruit Mark Lear. Kelly adds a dual threat aspect to our offense, which will hopefully add some rushing yards as we can’t pin our season on a freshman’s arm.

In a complete shocker, true freshman Victor proved a capable all around back and in doing so unseats incumbent two year starter Seth Wooley as our #1. We will likely spread carries out between him and Wooley, but there is no doubt Early, who was plan C in recruiting, turned out to be a nice little pickup, who can hopefully break a run longer than last year’s top scamper of 19 yards.

I was feeling good about the line last year and they failed to open many holes for our backs, but I maintain that optimism for this season, if only because of improved depth. The bookends Reginald ‘Biggie’ Small and Theo Sumner are back at the tackle spots for the third straight season, but sophomore Ray Wright pushed Sumner to the limit for the job and will get substantial reps at both tackle spots this year. Herbert Perrin returns at one guard spot, while the competition for the other spot yields another true freshman starter in Norman Harbin, who is strong as a bull and just needs to polish his technique. Center sees last year’s starter Mathew Goodrich overtaken by redshirt freshman Dan McCall, who improved by leaps and bounds over the off-season.

We have a regular revolving door at TE as Charles Young edges out Robert Kerns to win back the job he lost last year after starting as a freshman. At wideout both starters return and Schneider will get a lot more targets now that Tyrell Cox has graduated. Troy Mitchell is the better of our incoming freshman, but I decide to red shirt him to stagger eligibility, meaning his running mate Miguel Williams will be the #3 target and gives us a solid possession guy with the best hands on the team.

Yet another true freshman works his way into the starting lineup as Johnny Denning earns a spot alongside returning starter Paul King. Denning is strong and will be called upon to plug the interior gaps, while King is more suited to getting a good pass rush up the middle. Both starting defensive ends are back in Stanton McNeely and Jay Rash, though neither are particularly adept at rushing the passer. Christopher Ortiz will get some long yardage reps at DE as he is our most athletic, but recruiting a pass rusher this year is a priority.

What was once a weakness is now the strength of the defense thanks to the addition of highly regarded James Ferguson, who can fly. In fact, this group has speed to burn as last year’s freshman sensation Harry Zeigler can run as well and will cone again be expected to be the heart of the defense. Three year starter Donald Ramirez is not the athlete that Zeigler and Ferguson are, but is a cerebral player, who will be a coach on the field. Red shirting and waiting in the wings is George Orr, who is another speedy backer, who will compete with William Barney next season to replace Ramirez.

Incoming Freshman Rafael Morrill blows the coaches away during camp and jumps in front of Brian Freeman on the depth chart at corner, where he will start opposite Jose Taylor, to give us two 3 star players at the position. Freeman will be the primary nickel and is still going to get plenty of rotation time. The starting safeties will remain the same as James Whitley and Robert Watkins return, though redshirt freshman Daniel Galloway will see plenty of time as the heir apparent to Whitley.

A much nicer schedule overall than last year as we have winnable games against Idaho, Georgia Southern, Boston College (unbelievable how bad they have become), FIU and Troy. Akron and Buffalo are swing games that we could get if the Football Gods smile on us. All the rest will range from losses to beat downs, which is par for the course. So best case scenario 6-6, which would be a program record for wins and potentially boost our prestige finally, which would be a step or two on the long road to respect. 7-5 would get me coach of the year votes and 5-7 would still be more than satisfying. The wildcard will be seven freshmen starting, guess that could be looked at as good for the future or bad from an experience/depth standpoint. I like to think of it as the fruits of good recruiting!

The new season is underway with a good test for how much we have improved, as I did not list UConn as one of our likely wins as they are coming off a 5-7 season and actually went 8-5 and won a bowl game in 2017. The game is tight in the first half as both teams have opening game jitters. We sandwich an 8 yard run by Husky TB Carl Jones (18-96 on the day) with two field goals by new kicker Donald Scott (36 and 33 yards) and trail 7-6 at the half. Jose Taylor intercepts William Harkins to open the second half and we cap a 9 play drive with a 13 yard pass from James Kelly to Leon Belcher to go up 14-7 after the 2 point conversion.

UConn comes right back and ties it on Jones second TD run from 11 yards out to tie, but the defense buckles down and it is all UMass from then on as Seth Wooley closes the 3rd quarter with an 11 yard TD scamper of his own. The nail comes with 2:52 left when David Schneider hauls in a 49 yard strike from Kelly to close the scoring. Defensively we give up 205 yards on the ground, but rack up 195 of our own, led by Frosh phenom Victor Earle (19-117) with Wooley chipping in 58 yards on 14 carries. Our freshman QB is inconsistent, but gets it done as Kelly ends up 14-32, 209 yards 2 TD and 1 Int. Defensively we hold William Harkins to 11-27, 179 and pick him off twice, with James Whitley getting the second one. Zeigler is back to his old ways with 10 tackle and a forced fumble, while true freshman LB James Ferguson tallies 8 tackles. David Schneider is our leading receiver with 4 catches for 101 yards to go with his TD catch. This is a huge win to start the year!

I know you mentioned that the long gain for your team for the year was 19 yards. Are your opponents seeing the same thing? That was one of the things I mentioned upon the game's release - long gains on runs were extremely rare.

I am seeing them at about the normal RL pace. I already have two 21 yard runs this season, UMass just doesn't have speedy backs. Victor Earle is a power runner and it seems that type game wide have more consistent positive games, just not as many long runs. I looked at the top rushers from last season and their longest runs, 1st through 10th are 56, 79, 83, 90, 95, 67, 21, 72, 50, 49.

The top five after two games this season have the following long runs. 78, 87, 59, 77, 17. The number 5 rusher with the 17 yard run ran for over 1400 yards in 13 games last season and his longest run that years was only 20. Overall, if anything I think rushing yards per team is a little bit high. It's getting there though.

There is no reason in the world we shouldn’t destroy these guys, which is exactly why I am nervous. James Kelly quickly allays my fears with a pair of 1st quarter TD passes to Ezra Garber (10 yards) and David Schneider (18 yards). He tosses his third of the game in the second quarter finding TE Robert Kerns from 7 yards out and we take a 21-3 lead into the half as all the Vandals can manage is a 22 yd FG from Spencer Rico. The third quarter sees Idaho close the gap courtesy of a Gergorio McGhee to William Aguirre hook that covers 11 yards.

As the 4th quarter starts, Leon Belcher gets behind the Idaho secondary to haul in a 66 yard scoring strike, before Karl Farmer closes the scoring with a 23 yard pick six. All in all a total team effort to go to 2-0 and although James Kelly (12-21, 235 yards) does not complete a high percentage right now, he has a penchant for the big play as his four TD passes demonstrate. He now has a 6-1 TD/Int ratio in the early season and is making people forget about Darryl Lavigne. We spread the carries out nicely today as Victor Earle (13-95), Seth Wooley (12-71) and Donald Neil (14-40) all get double figure touches. Leon Belcher only hauls in two passes, but they go for 126 yards, a glossy 63.0 YPC average. Freshman CB Rafael Morrill gets his first career interception, while Harry Zeigler again paces the D in tackles with 8 as we hold Idaho to 45 yards rushing.

Side Note: The speed at which interest accumulates was adjusted in the patch, so you will see it grow much slower and in some cases remain low. This is a good thing in my opinion as it will add some more unpredictability and risk.

Break up the Minutemen!! Straight to the point here as this is probably the most complete game we have played in my tenure. Things start well on our first drive as James Kelly hits David Schneider, who is showing much more than he did his freshman year, on a 9 yard slant to jump up 7-0. Kelly chucks two more TD passes in the second quarter finding Charles Young from 4 yards out, before dialing long distance with Leon Belcher answering for an 86 yard hookup. Donald Scott adds to 40+ yard field goals and we take a 27-0 lead into the half. Things are going so well that Kelly is on the bench early in the 3rd quarter and Richard Kolb gets into the action tossing two TD passes to Melvin Najera that both cover 18 yards in the second half.

Overall we rack up 430 yards of total offense and hold Georgia Southern to 193 overall, including only 2 of 18 on 3rd down conversions. In just over a half James Kelly throws for 199 yards and 3 TDs, with no picks, but is only 10-21, which is the only chink in his armor right now as he protects the ball and makes big plays. In relief Kolb is 8-15, 109 yards and 2 TD’s and Seth Wooley fills in admirable for an injured Victor Earle, rushing for 84 yards on 18 carries. Leon Belcher continues to average obscene yards per catch, grabbing 4 balls for 144 yards, with Melvin Najera leads the team with 5 catches for 85 yards to go with his 2 TD catches. Defensively Harry Zeigler again leads the way with 7 tackles and Donald Ramirez chips in 6 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 PD and 1 Int as Mr. do everything. We are ranked 33rd in the country heading into a rematch with Boston College, who will be amped to pay us back for last season.

Injuries going in already have us hampered and we lose Harry Zeigler to a sprained ankle in the first quarter to add to the misery. Couple that with an unwarranted feeling of confidence since we upset them last year and you can only guess what happens next. BC is still a P5 team and they remind us of that by shredding our previously stalwart defense as we get no pass rush and they shred us for 305 yards passing and another 149 on the ground, taking advantage of Zeigler’s absence. We spend the first three quarters getting bullied as BC enters the 4th with a 24-0 lead behind three James Garcia’s TD passes as the BC QB finishes 10-18 for 219 yards before sitting in the 4th.

We finally wake up in the final quarter and manage to ‘win’ the 4th 14-7 as James Kelly (16-31, 167, 1 TD) hits Melvin Najera from 12 yards out, before Seth Wooley (19-61) closes the scoring with a 4 yard run with 42 seconds left in the game. James Morgan led BC with 16 carries for 112 yards as big play are the order of the day for the Eagles as they only amass 14 first downs (11 for us). The big star for the good guys is our punter Vincent Anderson, who punts 11 times for a 48.6 average and puts 3 down inside the 20. Defensively, Ziegler’s replacement William Barney is one of five Minutemen to record 5 tackles, while DT Paul King, who also had 5 stops, recorded our only sack. Two weeks to lick our wounds now and get healthy as the potent BYU offense awaits us.

Defense is the strength of both teams, though I give their ranking more credence due to SOS. Sure enough, they roar out of the gates to take a 10-0 lead after the 1st quarter on a 52 yard bomb from James Coughlin to Charles Moreno and a 48 yard John Bello field goal. On this day however our freshmen signal callers play like vets as we get on the board early in the 2nd on a 3 yard scramble by James Kelly, with a 14 yard pass from Kelly to the emerging David Schneider sandwiching a 35 yard FG by James Kelly and we lead at the half 17-10! I am nervous as the second half starts, but we continue to play solid defense and Richard Kolb, in for a series for James Kelly at QB as the latter gets shaken up, goes 3 for 3 and caps the drive with a 15 yard TD strike to Leon Belcher as we take a 24-10 lead into the final quarter.

It is inevitable that the Cougars will rally and they do as Coughlin finds Paul Anderson behind the coverage for another 52 yard TD hook up. Then in what proves to be a pivotal moment, Donald Scott drills his second FG from 28 yards out, with the Cougars answering quickly on a 3 yard run by Fernando Bilodeau to cut our lead to 3 with 7:26 left. We turn it over on our next possession, but force a stop on downs, before going on an epic 14 play drive that consumes nearly 5 minutes and ends in a 36 yard miss by Scott, which leaves BYU no time on the clock. We play BYU even, being outgained by only 7 yards (417 – 410) and overcoming a 3-2 turnover deficit. Victor Earle and Harry Zeigler both play and make a huge difference as Earle tallies 103 yards on 29 carries and Zeigler leads the team with 9 tackles. Schneider (93 yards) and Belcher (65 yards) both haul in 5 balls in a huge win for the program!

On paper a major mismatch, but I am worried about a letdown as the whistle blows. My fears are somewhat allayed as we get out to a 10-0 lead in the 1st quarter on a 33 yard Donald Scott FG and an 89 yard bomb from James Kelly to Leon Belcher. From there things get sluggish and we only lead 10-3 at halftime and I am worried that we are letting them hang around. Finally, CB Rafael Morris gives us a spark with a 68 yard punt return in the 3rd, which leads to 27-3 lead before FIU gets into the end zone on an 8 yard pass from Bud Goodin (14-33, 186, 1 TD, 1 Int) to Michael Zamora.

We close the scoring on an 8 yard Seth Wooley run to cruise home with a comfortable win and a franchise record 5th win!! Despite the inconsistency it is a good win, with the only disappointment being that we allowed FIU Williams Hart to get 110 yards on 19 carries as our run defense has a bit of let down. For the good guys James Kelly 15-27, 241 yards, 1 TD, 0 Int has another solid day and now has 12 TD passes to only 2 Int. He has been really impressive for a freshman and will hold all of our passing records when done. Seth Wooley leads the ground game with 10 carries for 92 yards and a score, while Victor Earle chips in 69 yards on 13 carries. Leon Belcher has 5 catches for 141 yards and the defense is led by our young linebacking corps as both Zeigler and true frosh Ferguson get 6 tackles.

An added note of interest: After we upset them, BYU went on to dismantle previously undefeated and #3 ranked Utah 37-7 this week, so maybe there is more to this team than you would think. The polls don't agree through as we are currently ranked 42.

Injury report: G Richard Clanton – Out (Sprained Ankle), C Dan McCall – Questionable (Stress Fracture Foot), QB James Kelly – Probable (Pulled Hamstring). Kelly should be fine, but even if he is not Kolb has been solid off the bench, especially for a true freshman. Their pass defense worries me and with two linemen down I worry we will run as well as we need to, to win this one.

The one thing I am beginning to realize with this team is that somebody always seems to step up when we need it and today it was a stingy defense that played tough on a day we shot ourselves in the foot offensively by committing 3 turnovers, including 2 fumbles that tarnished an otherwise very solid effort on the ground. Akron truck first on a 22 yard field goal by Richard Ogden, but James Kelly (17-30, 231, 2 TD, 1 Int) fired right back hitting David Schneider from 50 yards out to complete the first half scoring as we led 7-3 at the half. The third quarter only saw a 20 yard field goal from Donald Scott, which made it still anybodies game going into the 4th.

After trading field goals to start the final quarter, Schneider got loose again and hauled in a 68 yard TD strike from Kelly to give us a little bit of breathing room. From there we pounded the ball with Victor Earle (24-123) and Seth Wooley (14-98) punishing the Akron defense. Schneider ended up with 5 grabs for 169 yards to go with his 2 TD catches, as the defense held the Zips to 185 total yards and stymied Akron QB James Hatfield (10-35, 93), in addition to holding them to a paltry 3 for 16 on 3rd down conversions. The gun sounds and for the first time in school history, we are bowl eligible!!!

Injury report: T Kurt Kay – Out (Fractured Skull), FB Chad Ponder – Out (Fatigue), G Richard Clanton – Questionable (Sprained Ankle), C Dan McCall – Probable (Stress Fracture Foot). Scary injury for our backup tackle Kay, who will miss the rest of the season and Ponder will be a big loss in the run game form a lead blocking standpoint. This is a real test as both teams have good defenses, though being ranked second in the country in scoring defense should be taken with a grain of salt, given our schedule. Bowling Green’s resume is more impressive with 2 of their 3 losses coking to Texas and Notre Dame.

Talk about the cruel hand of reality slapping us in the face! As mentioned in the preview, Bowling Green’s “resume” of losses scared me and they were definitely the more battles tested of the teams on the field this day. I have been waiting/dreading the moment all season where James Kelly finally had a freshman moment at QB and boy, did it happen today. Sacked twice, but hurried consistently, Kelly was 19-41, 127 yards and 3 interceptions, ugly! The running game was no better as we were held for a net of 44 yards with Victor Earle 16-39 “leading” the way.

In terms of the game, the Falcons scored on rushing TD’s by Robert Landis (4 yards) and Richard McCabe (1 yard) in the first quarter, followed by TD passes by James Klinger of 29 yards (Sal Beaulieu) and 8 yards (Richard McCabe in the second and we were down 28-0 at half en route to one of the lowlights of my regime. A 21 yard pick 6 by Ronald Hollingsworth only added to our misery as Bowling Green racked up 406 total yards, including a 176 on the ground spread between seven Falcon ball carriers. Donald Ramirez racked up 10 tackles on defense, while Vincent Anderson averaged 46.2 yards on 10 punts, to give us the only things resembling a highlight.

Injury report: T Kurt Kay – Out (Fractured Skull), LB Harry Zeigler – Out (Torn Bicep), FB Chad Ponder – Questionable (Fatigue), G Richard Clanton – Probable (Sprained Ankle), C Dan McCall – Probable (Stress Fracture Foot). Obviously the big news is Harry Zeigler, the heart and soul of our defense not only out, but done for the year. This makes us much more vulnerable to a fairly decent Buffalo running game, though thankfully they can’t throw to save their lives, so the goal will be to get up early and make them play catch up.

This has all the makings of a heartbreaker as we can’t finish drives in the first half, settling for field goals of 28, 19 and 24 yards by Donald Scott. Seriously three times inside the 20 (twice inside the 10) and we get this. We also gift them the 3 points on a James Kelly interception, then allow what will be their only sustained drive of the game, capped by a 6 yard Joel Smoot run and we trail 10-9 at the half. Coming out after the half, Victor Earle (25-108) fumbles and they run it back to the 2. Roberto Free punches it in from 2 and it is 17-9.

Kelly, who finishes 24-33, 283 yards 1 TD, 1 Int recovers from his early foibles and finds David Schneider down the sideline for a 55 yard score, we go for 2 and it is tied at 17. Scott’s 4th field goal gives us the lead, but a special teams lapse leads to a 99 yard TD by Jimmy Pitt on the ensuing kickoff and we trail again 24-20. From here however the defense goes into lockdown mode and Donald Scott’s foot owns the 4th quarter as he hits three more field goals from 20, 31 and 56 yards out as we again can’t finish a drive. His 7 field goals is a team record, but two short of the NCAA mark of 9, by UConn’s William DeHart. The defense is lead by DT James Denning, who is a wrecking crew with 11 tackles, 1 TFL and a sack. True frosh James Ferguson also tallies 11 stops filling in nicely for the injured Harry Zeigler and we get a solid gut check win!

BYU 14 Coordinator Join Date: Jun 2002 Location: The scorched Desert	Season Recap 2018 – Final Record 4-8 Prestige 30 Doubled our wins from 2017, but still feeling flat as we were inconsistent and our big win over a P5 team was against 0-12 Boston College, hardly shout worthy. Then there was the loss to Army, which if we had done what we were supposed to, would have made it a successful season at 5-7. Still, there is lots to be optimistic about as we were young and we had some freshman step up (Looking at you Leon Belcher) for the second straight season. The roster is gradually turning over and in the next year or two I look forward to drubbing teams like Army with my players, and getting that signature win against a team like Bowling Green that actually went to a bowl after we had them on the ropes. Darryl Lavigne improved a ton from his junior to senior seasons, though he still made crushing mistakes at key times. He will be missed regardless as next season we will be starting either a sophomore or a freshman under center, meaning our anemic run game, which average just 80.1 yards a game will need to pick it up. We get all starters but one back up front and have a talented incoming freshman in Victor Earle, who should push incumbent Seth Wooley for the job. Our longest run of the season was 19 yards, so no home run threat at all! Defensively we had no pass rush at all, which put a lot of strain on a fairly talented secondary. The linebacking corps is in good stead with both Harry Zeigler (89 tackles) and Donald Ramirez (65 tackles) back. We also have an all-independent 1st team punter in Vincent Anderson, 48.9 avg, 15 inside the 20, returning. . Akron came out smoking, opening the game with 21 straight points courtesy of the right arm of Kent Land who tosses scoring strikes of 53, 25 and 2 yards. The Minutemen would not lie down (at least not yet) on this day however, as a pair of Darryl Lavigne TD passes to TE Robert Kerns (3 yards) and Frosh WR David Schneider (57 yards), followed by a 44 yard FG from Dewey Hicks had us down 21-17 and back in the hunt. From there it was all downhill as Land tossed two more TD passes to finish the day 15-27, 310 yards with 5 TD’s, before Thomas Wray (20 carries, 106 yards) capped the scoring off with a 7 yard run as we just couldn’t hang down the stretch. Lavigne had one of his better games, protecting the ball and going 22-38, 273 yards with 2 TD’s and 0 interceptions, but he missed some key throws in the second half. Alas, our hemorrhaging of yards will bite us as BG QB James Klinger says this is all the time he needs and he tosses TD strikes of 38 yards to Craig Roberts and 46 yards to Paul McConnell (Where the hell are our safeties?), the latter coming with just 57 seconds left. It wastes a decent day by Lavigne 20-40, 212 yards, 3 TD, 0 Int that sees Leon Belcher haul in 11 of his passes for 119 yards. Our running game is suck deluxe again, with Wooley the leader gaining 32 yards on 11 carries. Harry Zeigler (who else) tallies 11 tackles to lead the D, Donald Ramirez adds 9, while the “depressed” Bobby Padgett, still subbing for Jose Taylor, gets a pick. From there it is a barn burner into the second half as Buffalo knots it on a 62 yard run by Rodger Cobbs, we jump back up on a Lavigne to Belcher strike covering 5 yards. Buffalo scores the next two as James Trapp hooks up with Keith Walker on 29 and 28 yard TD passes. We tie it again on a 1 yard plunge by Donald Neil and then the wheels comes off. Buffalo scores the final three touchdowns of the game as our offense bogs down and the defense implodes. They end up outgaining us 525 to 297, which includes almost 300 yards on the ground! Nebraska did what they needed to do in the first half, outscoring us 45-0 behind a punishing run game that racked up 343 yards and again saw two players Edmund Kuntz (12-130) and Jimmy Homan (15-116) top the century mark. Cornhusker QB Jefferson Rouse played just over half the game, but still managed to chuck 5 TD passes, going 13-23, for 257 yards s the game was really over at the coin toss. Nebraska really was kind and subbed liberally after halftime, only outscoring us 17-10 after the break, so at least we salvaged some dignity. Their defense held us to 237 yards a and a disheartening 1-13 on 3rd down conversions, which of course gave our punter Vincent Anderson plenty of PT, and he responded averaging 51.1 yards a kick, with 2 inside the 20. Of course this only gave Nebraska more field to pad stats. Apart from that Darryl Lavigne was 20-38, 196 yards, 1 TD, 2 Int. Lavigne has improved on his TD/Int ratio from last year (17/13 currently) and could reach 20 TD passes against Texas State in our finale. Leon Belcher, who hauled in 4 passes for 59 yards now, has 54 receptions for 865 yards and an outside shot to hit 1000 yards with a magical day against the Bobcats next week. I would the true freshman has been our offensive MVP for the year and I am glad he is back for 3 more seasons. Seth Wooley is banged up and finishes with 3 carries for 24 yards, giving him a team high 537 on the season. We need much more from the run game next year! Five players lead the Defense with 5 tackles each and FS James Whitley forces and recovers his first career fumble. LB – Francis Franklin * (938) interest 8 (Commit to Louisiana Tech week 16) – The Bulldogs beat out Cincinnati and Toledo for his services, surprising since Toledo finished 12-0 and ranked 6th (The only FBS unbeaten) but again we gained form this loss. Not a great class, but not terrible. We only “lose” 7 of our offered targets, but all were reaches anyway. Overall we have commitments from three 3 stars, eleven 2 stars and a single 1 star, with one scholarship still open. We did get stronger on defense for sure and pretty much just added depth on the offensive side, though I am hoping someone like Harbin or Williams can surprise.

The game is tight in the first half as both teams have opening game jitters. We sandwich an 8 yard run by Husky TB Carl Jones (18-96 on the day) with two field goals by new kicker Donald Scott (36 and 33 yards) and trail 7-6 at the half. Jose Taylor intercepts William Harkins to open the second half and we cap a 9 play drive with a 13 yard pass from James Kelly to Leon Belcher to go up 14-7 after the 2 point conversion. UConn comes right back and ties it on Jones second TD run from 11 yards out to tie, but the defense buckles down and it is all UMass from then on as Seth Wooley closes the 3rd quarter with an 11 yard TD scamper of his own. The nail comes with 2:52 left when David Schneider hauls in a 49 yard strike from Kelly to close the scoring. Defensively we give up 205 yards on the ground, but rack up 195 of our own, led by Frosh phenom Victor Earle (19-117) with Wooley chipping in 58 yards on 14 carries. Our freshman QB is inconsistent, but gets it done as Kelly ends up 14-32, 209 yards 2 TD and 1 Int. Defensively we hold William Harkins to 11-27, 179 and pick him off twice, with James Whitley getting the second one. Zeigler is back to his old ways with 10 tackle and a forced fumble, while true freshman LB James Ferguson tallies 8 tackles. David Schneider is our leading receiver with 4 catches for 101 yards to go with his TD catch. This is a huge win to start the year! Final Score: UMass 28 UConn 14 Recruiting: Scholarships offered 2 of 20 C – Randall Marshall ** (1523) interest 16 (no other schools) – Strictly an offer for depth as we are set at C for the next three seasons. James Kelly quickly allays my fears with a pair of 1st quarter TD passes to Ezra Garber (10 yards) and David Schneider (18 yards). He tosses his third of the game in the second quarter finding TE Robert Kerns from 7 yards out and we take a 21-3 lead into the half as all the Vandals can manage is a 22 yd FG from Spencer Rico. The third quarter sees Idaho close the gap courtesy of a Gergorio McGhee to William Aguirre hook that covers 11 yards. As the 4th quarter starts, Leon Belcher gets behind the Idaho secondary to haul in a 66 yard scoring strike, before Karl Farmer closes the scoring with a 23 yard pick six. All in all a total team effort to go to 2-0 and although James Kelly (12-21, 235 yards) does not complete a high percentage right now, he has a penchant for the big play as his four TD passes demonstrate. He now has a 6-1 TD/Int ratio in the early season and is making people forget about Darryl Lavigne. We spread the carries out nicely today as Victor Earle (13-95), Seth Wooley (12-71) and Donald Neil (14-40) all get double figure touches. Leon Belcher only hauls in two passes, but they go for 126 yards, a glossy 63.0 YPC average. Freshman CB Rafael Morrill gets his first career interception, while Harry Zeigler again paces the D in tackles with 8 as we hold Idaho to 45 yards rushing. Things start well on our first drive as James Kelly hits David Schneider, who is showing much more than he did his freshman year, on a 9 yard slant to jump up 7-0. Kelly chucks two more TD passes in the second quarter finding Charles Young from 4 yards out, before dialing long distance with Leon Belcher answering for an 86 yard hookup. Donald Scott adds to 40+ yard field goals and we take a 27-0 lead into the half. Things are going so well that Kelly is on the bench early in the 3rd quarter and Richard Kolb gets into the action tossing two TD passes to Melvin Najera that both cover 18 yards in the second half. Overall we rack up 430 yards of total offense and hold Georgia Southern to 193 overall, including only 2 of 18 on 3rd down conversions. In just over a half James Kelly throws for 199 yards and 3 TDs, with no picks, but is only 10-21, which is the only chink in his armor right now as he protects the ball and makes big plays. In relief Kolb is 8-15, 109 yards and 2 TD’s and Seth Wooley fills in admirable for an injured Victor Earle, rushing for 84 yards on 18 carries. Leon Belcher continues to average obscene yards per catch, grabbing 4 balls for 144 yards, with Melvin Najera leads the team with 5 catches for 85 yards to go with his 2 TD catches. Defensively Harry Zeigler again leads the way with 7 tackles and Donald Ramirez chips in 6 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 PD and 1 Int as Mr. do everything. We are ranked 33rd in the country heading into a rematch with Boston College, who will be amped to pay us back for last season. BC is still a P5 team and they remind us of that by shredding our previously stalwart defense as we get no pass rush and they shred us for 305 yards passing and another 149 on the ground, taking advantage of Zeigler’s absence. We spend the first three quarters getting bullied as BC enters the 4th with a 24-0 lead behind three James Garcia’s TD passes as the BC QB finishes 10-18 for 219 yards before sitting in the 4th. We finally wake up in the final quarter and manage to ‘win’ the 4th 14-7 as James Kelly (16-31, 167, 1 TD) hits Melvin Najera from 12 yards out, before Seth Wooley (19-61) closes the scoring with a 4 yard run with 42 seconds left in the game. James Morgan led BC with 16 carries for 112 yards as big play are the order of the day for the Eagles as they only amass 14 first downs (11 for us). The big star for the good guys is our punter Vincent Anderson, who punts 11 times for a 48.6 average and puts 3 down inside the 20. Defensively, Ziegler’s replacement William Barney is one of five Minutemen to record 5 tackles, while DT Paul King, who also had 5 stops, recorded our only sack. Two weeks to lick our wounds now and get healthy as the potent BYU offense awaits us. Hopefully Zeigler and Earle can go, we need them! Defense is the strength of both teams, though I give their ranking more credence due to SOS. Sure enough, they roar out of the gates to take a 10-0 lead after the 1st quarter on a 52 yard bomb from James Coughlin to Charles Moreno and a 48 yard John Bello field goal. On this day however our freshmen signal callers play like vets as we get on the board early in the 2nd on a 3 yard scramble by James Kelly, with a 14 yard pass from Kelly to the emerging David Schneider sandwiching a 35 yard FG by James Kelly and we lead at the half 17-10! I am nervous as the second half starts, but we continue to play solid defense and Richard Kolb, in for a series for James Kelly at QB as the latter gets shaken up, goes 3 for 3 and caps the drive with a 15 yard TD strike to Leon Belcher as we take a 24-10 lead into the final quarter. It is inevitable that the Cougars will rally and they do as Coughlin finds Paul Anderson behind the coverage for another 52 yard TD hook up. Then in what proves to be a pivotal moment, Donald Scott drills his second FG from 28 yards out, with the Cougars answering quickly on a 3 yard run by Fernando Bilodeau to cut our lead to 3 with 7:26 left. We turn it over on our next possession, but force a stop on downs, before going on an epic 14 play drive that consumes nearly 5 minutes and ends in a 36 yard miss by Scott, which leaves BYU no time on the clock. We play BYU even, being outgained by only 7 yards (417 – 410) and overcoming a 3-2 turnover deficit. Victor Earle and Harry Zeigler both play and make a huge difference as Earle tallies 103 yards on 29 carries and Zeigler leads the team with 9 tackles. Schneider (93 yards) and Belcher (65 yards) both haul in 5 balls in a huge win for the program! My fears are somewhat allayed as we get out to a 10-0 lead in the 1st quarter on a 33 yard Donald Scott FG and an 89 yard bomb from James Kelly to Leon Belcher. From there things get sluggish and we only lead 10-3 at halftime and I am worried that we are letting them hang around. Finally, CB Rafael Morris gives us a spark with a 68 yard punt return in the 3rd, which leads to 27-3 lead before FIU gets into the end zone on an 8 yard pass from Bud Goodin (14-33, 186, 1 TD, 1 Int) to Michael Zamora. We close the scoring on an 8 yard Seth Wooley run to cruise home with a comfortable win and a franchise record 5th win!! Despite the inconsistency it is a good win, with the only disappointment being that we allowed FIU Williams Hart to get 110 yards on 19 carries as our run defense has a bit of let down. For the good guys James Kelly 15-27, 241 yards, 1 TD, 0 Int has another solid day and now has 12 TD passes to only 2 Int. He has been really impressive for a freshman and will hold all of our passing records when done. Seth Wooley leads the ground game with 10 carries for 92 yards and a score, while Victor Earle chips in 69 yards on 13 carries. Leon Belcher has 5 catches for 141 yards and the defense is led by our young linebacking corps as both Zeigler and true frosh Ferguson get 6 tackles. Kelly should be fine, but even if he is not Kolb has been solid off the bench, especially for a true freshman. Their pass defense worries me and with two linemen down I worry we will run as well as we need to, to win this one. The one thing I am beginning to realize with this team is that somebody always seems to step up when we need it and today it was a stingy defense that played tough on a day we shot ourselves in the foot offensively by committing 3 turnovers, including 2 fumbles that tarnished an otherwise very solid effort on the ground. Akron truck first on a 22 yard field goal by Richard Ogden, but James Kelly (17-30, 231, 2 TD, 1 Int) fired right back hitting David Schneider from 50 yards out to complete the first half scoring as we led 7-3 at the half. The third quarter only saw a 20 yard field goal from Donald Scott, which made it still anybodies game going into the 4th. After trading field goals to start the final quarter, Schneider got loose again and hauled in a 68 yard TD strike from Kelly to give us a little bit of breathing room. From there we pounded the ball with Victor Earle (24-123) and Seth Wooley (14-98) punishing the Akron defense. Schneider ended up with 5 grabs for 169 yards to go with his 2 TD catches, as the defense held the Zips to 185 total yards and stymied Akron QB James Hatfield (10-35, 93), in addition to holding them to a paltry 3 for 16 on 3rd down conversions. The gun sounds and for the first time in school history, we are bowl eligible!!! Scary injury for our backup tackle Kay, who will miss the rest of the season and Ponder will be a big loss in the run game form a lead blocking standpoint. This is a real test as both teams have good defenses, though being ranked second in the country in scoring defense should be taken with a grain of salt, given our schedule. Bowling Green’s resume is more impressive with 2 of their 3 losses coking to Texas and Notre Dame. Talk about the cruel hand of reality slapping us in the face! As mentioned in the preview, Bowling Green’s “resume” of losses scared me and they were definitely the more battles tested of the teams on the field this day. I have been waiting/dreading the moment all season where James Kelly finally had a freshman moment at QB and boy, did it happen today. Sacked twice, but hurried consistently, Kelly was 19-41, 127 yards and 3 interceptions, ugly! The running game was no better as we were held for a net of 44 yards with Victor Earle 16-39 “leading” the way. In terms of the game, the Falcons scored on rushing TD’s by Robert Landis (4 yards) and Richard McCabe (1 yard) in the first quarter, followed by TD passes by James Klinger of 29 yards (Sal Beaulieu) and 8 yards (Richard McCabe in the second and we were down 28-0 at half en route to one of the lowlights of my regime. A 21 yard pick 6 by Ronald Hollingsworth only added to our misery as Bowling Green racked up 406 total yards, including a 176 on the ground spread between seven Falcon ball carriers. Donald Ramirez racked up 10 tackles on defense, while Vincent Anderson averaged 46.2 yards on 10 punts, to give us the only things resembling a highlight. Obviously the big news is Harry Zeigler, the heart and soul of our defense not only out, but done for the year. This makes us much more vulnerable to a fairly decent Buffalo running game, though thankfully they can’t throw to save their lives, so the goal will be to get up early and make them play catch up. This has all the makings of a heartbreaker as we can’t finish drives in the first half, settling for field goals of 28, 19 and 24 yards by Donald Scott. Seriously three times inside the 20 (twice inside the 10) and we get this. We also gift them the 3 points on a James Kelly interception, then allow what will be their only sustained drive of the game, capped by a 6 yard Joel Smoot run and we trail 10-9 at the half. Coming out after the half, Victor Earle (25-108) fumbles and they run it back to the 2. Roberto Free punches it in from 2 and it is 17-9. Kelly, who finishes 24-33, 283 yards 1 TD, 1 Int recovers from his early foibles and finds David Schneider down the sideline for a 55 yard score, we go for 2 and it is tied at 17. Scott’s 4th field goal gives us the lead, but a special teams lapse leads to a 99 yard TD by Jimmy Pitt on the ensuing kickoff and we trail again 24-20. From here however the defense goes into lockdown mode and Donald Scott’s foot owns the 4th quarter as he hits three more field goals from 20, 31 and 56 yards out as we again can’t finish a drive. His 7 field goals is a team record, but two short of the NCAA mark of 9, by UConn’s William DeHart. The defense is lead by DT James Denning, who is a wrecking crew with 11 tackles, 1 TFL and a sack. True frosh James Ferguson also tallies 11 stops filling in nicely for the injured Harry Zeigler and we get a solid gut check win! LB – Leonard Pugh *** (1241) interest 6 (Committed to Connecticut week 10) – Again, no shock, in fact it was probably stupid to hang in for so long on him. Got the bounce back we needed and our 7th win should probably guarantee us a bowl berth..I hope, have a great shot at number 8 in our final game, which would clinch it. Good getting our first two commits as we enter the home stretch of recruiting, this class should be solid, but I don’t see another of those surprise “out of our league” commits we have landed the last two seasons.
