FOFC Favorite Rock Act - Round 1 Group F

Group F sees the Stones make their debut as well as a couple of brutal matchups (for me at least) as REO takes on Santana and The Cars battle Rainbow. Scorpions and Foghat is also a sad draw for me. Scorpions get my vote, but Foghat Live was one of the defining albums of my teen years and still holds up today.

The mixing of individuals and bands is going to get sticky at some point (frex Clapton here, but D&tD earlier much lower seeded...and the implied Carols Santana v Santana angle). And I confess that my personal tracking of band variations (CSN, rather than CSNY, here) is going to be troubling as well. I'm not willing to do much research for something like this... so there' bound to be some inconsistency along the way.

Still no hill to die on for me, yet.

I'm surprised the jump Elvis is getting considering how much some people here hate light rock.

But it's early

Disappointed that I have the only vote for Satriani out of 24. He's truly a rock god, much much more than the bluesy/jazzy licks of Clapton.

Foghat and Scorpions both getting the best chance they'll ever get.

Slow RIde was good but I like this foghat tune better

vs

this ...no matter how legit you wanna call them they were so 80s....so 80s
the zebra pattern...that distort... probably better than their hairmetal look in this vid

I think their best work (with a few exceptions) was all prior to this album. To me, my fav Scorps albums are Black Out, Animal Magnetism and Love Drive.

Scorpions are slightly unique for me personally, in that at one time in the '90s I absolutely would've said they were my least favorite band in the world....at the time they were playing 'Winds of Change' every hour on the hour, and fuck that song and it's whistling intro. Now, after much time has passed I can finally ignore that song and appreciate their older shit. Also I get endless enjoyment out of role-playing the hypothetical pitch for 'Virgin Killler' in my head, with a thick German accent.

I didn't even bother voting in the Clapton/Satriani matchup. ZZZZzzzzzZZZZZzzzzz

REO Speedwagon is the musical equivalent of a really tiny hippy dude who is just a little too handsy and would probably be a sexual predator if he could gain just a little more weight.

Here is a list of Clapton solo songs: (in case some are confused which clpaton this is)

70s: After Midnight, Let it Rain, I Shot the SHeriff, Cocaine, WOnderful TOnight (The I win and get to f*** patti song), Lay DOwn Sally

80s: Forever Man, Pretending

I think Coacaine and Lay DOwn Sally are excellent shows for him albeit very overplayed. Love Let it Rain as well.

Let it Rain sounds so beatley it hurts. A very George kinda song
I wonder if george and ringo played on this.

REO Speedwagon was probably also not helped by the fact that the times & genetics conspired to make them look like the least rocking band in the history of the world. Nothing says rock like mullet perms and pastels.

Satriani got a terrible draw. One of the best guitarists of all time.

Scorpions were my very first concert. I have a soft spot.

my favorite STP I think along with Interstate...
nothing says rock like heroine abuse! Really like the bass and guitar work of this band.

I wonder if VElvet Revolver will be in this list

Elvis Costello is not light rock. Started out as punk. Sure, some of his later work is very mellow musically by his songwriting is not. "Oliver's Army" and "Tramp the Dirt Down" are lyrical punches to the face.

One definite upset as Cooper will get bounced and two more going to the wire.

Alice Cooper is interesting. He's got good songs, he still tours well, he was huge in the '70s, made a comeback in the '80s, but still kind of exists on the fringe of pop culture. I know a lot of folk of all stripes who like Alice Cooper, but I don't think I know anybody who's passionate about him. CS&N are kind of the opposite...they have almost zero stage presence or production, and similarly I know very few people who simply like Crosby, Stills & Nash, they're usually passionate in their opinion, whatever it may be.

I do love me some STP, who kind of started off like a rip-off of Pearl Jam, but quickly evolved into something more interesting (though, not necessarily less derivative).

REO....I can honestly say that they kinda suck. I was basically bored until the encore where they played their 3 songs I knew. THe band has a couple good guitar solos. Some nice harmony blend at times. Maybe a good piano lick or two. But not enough. The rest is all extremely mediocre. Cronin's banter to the audience sounded so desperate. He seemed out of breath and never took a breath when speaking. And seemed to gush over himself, the audience, people, the 4th, 'merica, the songs, the band....STOP! Just play...

They are like that cousin you see at a reunion that smiles too much. You are told to talk to them and you try, but he creeps you out and he tells you about himself but it's pretty boring except for that one cool thing he did that goes on for too long. Then you just want to get away from him and not admit to anyone that you like that one cool thing he did.

I'm pretty disappointed that they're beating (or have beaten) Carlos Santana. Even if Santana is consisered a separate band from the man himself, I would hope that a great guitarist and frontman like Carlos Santana would still be able to beat them out.
