Quite right. Signs are indeed pointing toward him as the pilot/casualty, but it's a sad story regardless.

Man. His recent twitter feed is all him raving about his new plane and how much fun he was having flying it.

Damn. What a freaking amazing pitcher. Sad that he's dead, but apparent that he loved what he was doing.

My in-laws live in a fly-in community. It seems like every few months another amateur pilot from the community crashes. It's a dangerous hobby that unfortunately I'm not sure people take seriously enough.
RIP, Roy.

I hate that I missed that one. Was game one of the Stanley Cup finals with the Flyers versus Blackhawks. I remember we turned the Phillies game on early to see how they were doing and it was the 2nd inning. A comment was made that it was 6 up and 6 down for Florida but at that point a 2 inning perfect game doesn't catch your attention. |

Wow, so sad. Roy was an amazing pitcher, I saw so many of his games. That guy had guts, in an era where no one was throwing complete games, he was one of the only ones left that could.

Based on his Twitter feed it looks like he had the plane for less than a month.

So, it looks like he was showingboating flying at extreme and unusual changes in altitude before the plane went into the water. TMZ has a video up on youtube which is really really heartbreaking. Only 40 of that type of plane in existence, with 2 confirm deaths now. RIP Roy. You were a heck of a pitcher and person.

Can't believe he was only 40. It seems like 10 years ago when I last remember seeing him on the field.

Loved watching him pitch when he was the most incredible pitcher in the game. The fact that this was a plane crash that took him, when he clearly loved every minute of that experience is so sad. Thanks for the memories, Doc. RIP.

Happens too often to amateur pilots. I hope the Jays do the right thing and retire his number ASAP next year. (Literally, all I ever do is post on their instagram posts now and say RETIRE. HIS. NUMBER.)
I'm sure this will boost his HOF candidacy, but can't see him being first ballot (though I'd be more than OK with it as a Blue Jays stan) The thing to consider is how BAD those Jays teams he played on were. I hated him going to Philly, but I was glad he finally went to a major US market where fans got to appreciate him as we Blue Jays fan did forever.
