What If Sports - NFL World Cup 2018

Taking the "selected by me" best teams from each of the current 32 NFL teams and will run a world cup style tournament. Felt the need to do something world cup related.

1st
I'll select the teams.

2nd
I'll randomly pick the 8 groups.

3rd
WC NFL-style time.

How it will work.

1st round:
Round robin tournament, 1 game versus each team in your group. Yes, ties will be possible. 3 Points for each win, 1 point for each tie. Point differential tie breaker. Each game will be neutral site.

2nd round:
Top two teams from each group move on to the final single elimination tournament. No ties in these games.

The decision was 1st a super bowl win would beat anything else (so the 16-0 Patriots missed out). Second, if no super bowl win then a birth in the super bowl would be the next criteria (so that ruled out the Vikings team with Cunningham). Then we go to the recent expansion/Browns/Lions rule which would be good season while winning the division.

I used random.org to generate the groups but I had two rules. No teams from the same current division in the same group and each group would have 2 NFC and 2 AFC teams.

If either of those rules was broken with the random roll I went to the next team down the list, until I got to one that fit.

There was one roll that I re-rolled. Round 3 saw the 1985 Chicago Bears come up on the roll for group F and I thought that made the group a serious group of death so I rolled again.

Glad that every group has at least 2 SB winners and no group has 4.

1997 Packers vs. 2016 Falcons

On the Falcons' first drive Devonta Freeman ends it with a 36 yard touchdown run as the Falcons take a 7-0 lead. The Packers would answer with a William Henderson 16 yard touchdown run to tie the game 7-7. The Falcons would get a late 46 yard Matt Bryant field goal and would lead 10-7 after the first quarter.

The Packers would respond quickly, just 8 seconds into the 2nd quarter as Brett Favre hits Robert Brooks for a 44 yard touchdown strike to take a 14-10 lead. After the teams trade 3 and outs the Falcons would go on a 17 play, 77 yard drive that ate up over 9 minutes of the clock and ended in a 26 yard field goal to get to within 14-13. The Packers would attempt a 53 yard field goal on the final play of the half but it would miss wide right. The Packers take a 14-13 lead into the half.

The Packers would drive the distance on their first drive of the second half and Robert Brooks would catch a 10 yard touchdown pass from Favre, his second touchdown reception of the game. The touchdown puts the Packers up 21-13. The Packers would add 3 more points on a 30 yard field goal with under 2 minutes left in the quarter. The third quarter ends with the Packers up 24-13.

With 12:12 left in the game Dorsey Levens would score on a 7 yard run to increase the lead to 31-13. The game is getting out of hand. After exchanging possessions the Falcons get the ball with 4:31 left and drive 66 yards in under a minute and a half. The drive ends on a Matt Ryan 19 yard touchdown pass to Julio Jones. They have pulled back to 31-20 with 3:09 left in the game. The Packers get a 1st down on their drive but Levens fumbles the ball with 1:07 left to give the Falcons the slightest hope. The Falcons are unable to capitalize and the game ends on a 4th and goal incomplete pass.

1997 Packers 31
2016 Falcons 20

1968 Jets vs. 1969 Chiefs

The Jets are on the board first on a Matt Snell 30 yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead. The Chiefs answer just 2 plays later on a 69 yard touchdown pass from Len Dawson to Frank Arbanas to tie it up 7-7. The Jets would drive into Chiefs' territory but Namath would be intercepted by Willie Lanier. The quarter ends tied 7-7.

Midway through the 2nd Dawson would hit Frank Pitts for a 7 yard touchdown pass to give the Chiefs a 14-7 lead. Nether team would do much but a late fumble gives the Jets one chance for a hail mary from midfield but it comes up incomplete. The Chiefs lead 14-7 at the half.

Midway through the 3rd Arbanas would catch his second touchdown of the game, a 10 yarder to give the Chiefs a 21-7 lead. The Jets would drive deep into Chiefs' territory but it the drive stalls at the 7 and they settle for a 24 yard field goal to get to within 21-10. The quarter ends with the Chiefs up by 11, 21-10.

Early in the 4th a good punt return would set the Chiefs up in Jets territory to begin their drive at the 34. On 3rd down Dawson would be picked off by Ralph Baker to end the drive. The Jets would get a first down but drive stalls there. After which a 51 yard touchdown run by Robert Holmes puts the game basically out of reach at 28-10 with just over 8 minutes remaining. The Jets would then drive to the Chiefs' 33 but turn the ball over on downs with just over 4 minutes left. After forcing a 3 and out the Jets would again drive, this time to the 17. Again they would turn the ball over on downs. The Chiefs run the clock out for the 28-10 victory.

1990 Bills vs. 2017 Eagles

The Eagles threaten first as they drive into Bills' territory to the 18 but Ajayi fumbles the ball and the drive stalls. The drive gives the Bills momentum as they drive the distance, capped off by a Jim Kelly to Keith McKeller touchdown pass to give the Bills a 7-0 lead. The quarter ends with the Eagles having a 1st and goal from the 5 after an Ajayi 45 yard run but the Bills still lead 7-0.

The Eagles drive ends with Carson Wentz coming up short on a scramble and Jake Elliott hits the chip shot field goal to make it 7-3. The teams exchange a couple punts before the Eagles take over on their own 37 with 4:28 left in the half. The Eagles drive to the Bills' 17 and have a 3rd and 5. Wentz is sacked by Bruce Smith to force 4th down and Elliott hits the field goal to make it 7-6 with under a minute left in the half. The Bills drive to the Eagles' 32 with just seconds left to setup a last second field goal attempt. Scott Norwood misses wide left but the Bills lead 7-6 at the half.

The Bills drive across midfield to start the 3rd but are forced to punt. The Eagles start from their own 20 and drive to the Bills' 7 but a dropped pass sets up another Jake Elliott chop shot to give the Eagles a 9-7 lead. The Bills are forced to punt and the Eagles drive to the Bills' 6 yard line and have a 4th and goal as the quarter ends with the Eagles up 9-7.

Jake Elliott starts the 4th off with another chop shot field goal to extend the lead to 12-7. After the Bills are held to a 3 and out Wentz is intercepted by James Williams and the Bills take over on the Eagles' 42. The Bills get a 1st down but are stopped at the 26 and settle for a 43 yard field goal to make it 12-10. The Eagles take over with 10:26 left in the game and go on a 5 minute drive to the Bills' 3 yard line but an incomplete pass on 3rd and goal leads to another chip shot field goal. The Eagles lead 15-10. After forcing a 3 and out the Eagles take over at their own 28 with 4:16 left. After picking up a 1st down Ajayi takes a handoff and goes 57 yards for the score. The Eagles take a 22-10 lead. The Bills take over and drive into Eagle's territory but Jim Kelly is intercepted by Patrick Robinson to seal the victory.

1990 Bills 10
2017 Eagles 22

2002 Buccaneers vs. 1986 Browns

The defenses control the 1st quarter as there is little offense at all. Only 1 first down in the quarter and that was nullified by a Bernie Kosar interception 2 plays later. The first quarter ends scoreless.

The Buccaneers break the ice on a 49 yard field goal with 7:07 left in the 2nd quarter to take a 3-0 lead. The Browns answer and drive the distance with Kosar hitting Ozzie Newsome for a 13 yard touchdown pass. The Browns take a 7-3 lead. The Buccaneers respond and go on a 10 play drive that ends on a Johnson to Johnson 5 yard touchdown pass. They have retaken the lead 10-7. The Browns drive to midfield but Kosar is intercepted by John Lynch to end the drive. Time runs out on the Buccaneers and they go into the half leading 10-7.

The 3rd quarter is again dominated by defense. A few more first downs are made but no team crosses midfield and the punters earn their paychecks. After three quarters the Buccaneers lead 10-7.

After exchanging a couple punts the Buccaneers take over near midfield. They go the distance and cap it with another Johnson to Johnson (Brad to Keyshawn) pass, this one 23 yards. The Buccaneers extend their lead to 17-7. The Browns drive into Buccaneers territory but turn the ball over on downs. After forcing a 3 and out the Browns get the ball at their 38 with 2:04 left. Their drive is capped by a Kevin Mack 1 yard plunge across the goal line but it is far too late as they pull to within 17-14 but only 4 seconds left. The onside kick attempt it not successful. The Buccaneers win 17-14.

Each team would add a field goal in the second quarter. The Rams would lead 17-3 at the half.

The Rams start the second half driving into the Patriots' territory but would miss a field goal. The Patriots follow that up by reaching the Rams' 37 but Mike Jones would intercept Brady to end the drive. The Rams would take the ball and drive the distance, capped off by a Warner to Hakim 13 yard touchdown pass to give the Rams a 24-3 lead through three quarters.

The Patriots would get back in the game very early in the 4th on a 7 yard Antowain Smith touchdown run to get back to 24-10. On 3rd and 11 from the 21 Brees is intercepted by George Jamison at the 2 to end the threat. On the Lions first play Peete goes deep and is intercepted by Randall Gay who returns it to the Lions' 33. Early in the 4th on a 3rd and 19 Brees hits Meachum for 22 yards to extend the drive. On the next play Brees hits Henderson for a 34 yard gain into Lions' territory. On 4th and 4 from the Lions' 11 the Saints go for it again. They give it to Thomas on a quick hitter and he plows through the line and drags tacklers into the end zone for the score. The game is now a one score game at 24-21. The Lions pick up a couple first downs and get across midfield but again are forced to punt. The Saints start out on their own 15. On the first play Brees hits Reggie Bush for a 36 yard gain to cross midfield. The Saints drive to the Lions' 33 and have a decision to make on 4th and 5. The Steelers get the ball first and drive into Cowboys' terriroty thanks to a 17 yard Rocky Bleier run and a 32 yard Bradshaw to Stallworth pass. They stall at the 14 and settle for a 31 yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. The defenses control the remainder of the quarter as the only drive that wasn't a three and out was a drive ended near midfield when Bradshaw was intercepted by Kevin Smith. The Steelers lead 3-0 after 15 minutes of play.

Defense controls the second quarter as the deepest into the other team
s territory either team gets is the 46. All drives end in punts, or the end of the half. The Steelers lead 3-0 after the first half.

The Cowboys start the second half by getting into the Steelers half of the field thanks to a 25 yard pass from Aikman to Harper. They drive 59 yards in 9 plays and score on a Franco Harris 3 yard run to give the Steelers a 10-6 lead with 2:52 left in the 3rd. The quarter ends with the Cowboys having a 1st down on the Steelers' 40 yard line.

The Giants get on the board first after taking the opening kickoff and driving to the 28 of the Titans. They hit a 45 yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. Both defenses keep either team from mounting another drive and the quarter ends with the Giants up 3-0.

The Giants quickly move into Titans' territory but Phil Simms is intercepted by Dainon Sidney at the 22. Two plays later McNair hits Wycheck who breaks a big gain, 64 yards to the Giants' 13. On the next play McNair hits George for the touchdown. The Titans take a 7-3 lead. On a near duplicate of the previous Giants' drive Simms is again intercepted by Sidney, this time at the Titans' 39. Groups E and F just got really interesting.

I'll jump on tomorrow to finish out the 2nd set of games and hopefully get into the 3rd and final round of games in the group stage.

Every team could potentially go through. The Chiefs would clinch the top spot with a tie or victory. The Falcons are out with a loss or tie. Everything else would depend upon each result.

1969 Chiefs vs. 1997 Packers

After the teams exchange a punt The Chiefs start their next drive just across midfield. They manage to get to the 20 but settle for a 37 yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. The closet any team gets during the rest of the quarter is the opponent's 47 as the Chiefs lead 3-0 after the 1st quarter.

The Packers start their first drive of the 2nd quarter at their own 15 with 10:55 left. They take over 6 minutes off the clock and end the drive with a 22 yard Favre to Thomason touchdown pass to take a 7-3 lead with 4:31 left in the half. Neither team threatens again for the half and the Packers lead 7-3 at the half.

On the opening drive of the second half Favre is intercepted by Willie Lanier near midfield. The Chiefs drive to the Packers' 31 and on a 3rd and 8 a fumble ends the drive. The Packers drive near midfield but are forced to punt. On 3rd and 10 from their own 11 Dawson is intercepted by Mike Prior and the Packers start at the Chiefs' 17. On 3rd and 10 Favre hits Mayes for a 17 yard touchdown to give the Packers a 14-3 lead with just over a minute left in the quarter. The quarter ends with the Chiefs having a 2nd and 5 at the Packers' 48.

The Chiefs continue their drive and it stalls at the 9. They kick a 26 yard chip shot to make it 14-6. The Packers strike back quickly as Favre hits Henderson for a 69 yard touchdown on their second play of the drive to take a 21-6 lead with 10:34 left. The Chiefs start from their own 25 and they drive the distance on 7 plays as Holmes scores on a 1 yard dive to get back to 21-13 with 6:46 left. The Packers go three and out and the Chiefs get the ball at their own 22 with 4:23 left. Dawson hits Pitts for 22 yards and Garrett picks up 32 on a sweep and in two plays the Chiefs are at the Packers' 26. On 3rd and 5 Dawson hits Richardson for a 21 yard touchdown to make it 21-19 with 1:52 left. They are going to two for the tie. Dawson is pressured and fires into the endzone but is off target, the conversion is no good. The Chiefs kickoff and look to play defense. On 3rd and 10 from the 35 Favre fakes the handoff and rolls to his right, he fires to Freeman downfield, complete for a gain of 22 and the Packers can run out the clock.

The Chiefs clinch moving to the next round. If the Jets win by 17 points ore more they will advance, if not the Packers will advance. The Jets could take the top spot but it would require a 45 point or larger victory, anything less give the Chiefs the top spot.

1969 Chiefs 19
1997 Packers 21

1968 Jets vs. 2016 Falcons

The Falcons leave little doubt in a 41-24 victory over the Jets, eliminating them from the next round and sending the Packers through.

1968 Jets 24
2016 Falcons 41

Very wide open. The Giants, Bears and Titans control their fate as a victory for either will put them through. The Chargers can advance with a victory but it needs to be by at least 13 points.
