College Football Replay 1999- ?

The 1998 NCAA Division I-A football season was the first of the Bowl Championship Series, which saw Tennessee win the national championship, one year after star quarterback Peyton Manning left for the NFL. The Volunteers defeated the Florida State Seminoles 23-16 in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Arizona to secure the inaugural BCS National Championship.

The BCS combined elements of the old Bowl Coalition and the Bowl Alliance it replaced. The agreement existed between the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, and Orange Bowls, the Cotton Bowl Classic diminishing in status since the breakup of the Southwest Conference. Like the Bowl Alliance, a national championship game would rotate between the four bowls, with the top two teams facing each other. These teams were chosen based upon a BCS poll, combining the AP poll, the Coaches poll, and a third computer component. The computer factored in things such as strength of schedule, margin of victory, and quality wins without taking into account time (in other words a loss in October and a loss in November were on equal footing).

However, like the Bowl Coalition, the bowls not hosting the national championship would retain their traditional tie-ins.

The first run of the Bowl Championship Series was not without controversy as Kansas State finished third in the final BCS standings but was not invited to a BCS bowl game. Ohio State (ranked 4th) and two-loss Florida (8th) received the at-large bids instead. Also, Tulane went undefeated but finished 10th in the BCS standings and was not invited to a BCS bowl because of their strength of schedule.

Ricky Williams took homes the Heisman Trophy in a landslide along with the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award.

Interesting, I'll be following. Is this a computer game, a board game? I've never heard of it

It is a computer game here is the link to the newest game which is version 10 Second and Ten Version X. The game includes a Pro and College game. The Pro game also includes an encyclopedia which is basically a record keeping program for all of the stats the game generates.

I haven't played in a number of versions (I'm pretty sure I was around for the first PC version of SAT if that gives you some idea) but would be shocked if it isn't still very solid with/for an as-played basis.

Week 1

#3 Penn State - 31
#4 Arizona - 29

Not a bad matchup for the first game of the year. Two top 5 teams facing off in what was expected to be a shootout and the game did not disappoint. Arizona put up 533 yards of offense while Penn State added another 376 yards. Both quarterbacks thru 3 touchdowns and 1 pick. The difference in this game was a 50 yard Penn State drive which led to the game winning 32 yard field goal. After being down 28-14 going into the 4th quarter Arizona's 15 unanswered points made this game a nail biter at the end. The MVP was Arizona QB Keith Smith who was 14-28 251 yards and 3 touchdowns plus another 7 carries for 125 yards rushing.

#18 Notre Dame - 23 - in OT
Kansas - 17

Pretty boring game with 5 turnovers and Tony Fisher getting the MVP 12-61 yards and 2 TDs.

#1 Florida State - 43
Louisiana Tech - 20

Chris Weinke led the way 25-38 359 yards and 3 TDs

#17 Texas - 20
NC State - 2

This one was all Texas RB Hodges Miller 128 yard rushing and 2 TDs. NC State had just 188 total yards, were sacked 6 times and could not move the ball.

#12 Miami - 23
#9 Ohio State - 0

Total rout by Miami who sacked Buckeye Steve Bellisari 3 times and picked him off 5 times. Bellisari was a pathetic 9-30 passing for 121 yards. Santana Moss was the MVP with 3 catches for 63 yards along with an 87 yard punt return for a touchdown.

Week 1 in the books with a very good Penn State vs Arizona game while the rest of the games were a bit on the disappointing side.

So I think each week until we have more clear cut rankings I will post some key matchups, upsets and highlight special performances. I wish the game generated rankings for the preseason and then updated from rather than just going off the teams that actually played games. Ah well. On to week 2.
