MLB Revisited - OOTP 20 Alternate History

Going with an OOTP 20 league introducing an alternate history from 1901 forward.

I have created a 2 division league with 6 teams in each division. It is starting with just an MLB level but after the 1910 season I have added a AAA level.


The setup:
-140 game seasons
-No DH
-Finances and other settings will automatically adjust through time
-No automatic expansion (I will adjust it to 16 teams in the major league level; haven't decided the year for that yet)
-No previous history (I have learned that players are getting added to the career leaders from prior to 1901 when they come up for Hall of Fame voting)

Decade 1 (1901-1910)

The first 10 years have seen the Chicago Cubs rise to become a "threepeat" champion as they won it all in 1907, 1908 and 1909 before losing their division in 1910.

The Cardinals were the first team to win two titles and they won in 1901 and 1903. They have not been back to the post season since.

The Pirates were the first repeat winner as they won in 1904 and 1905. They have won their division 2 other times but lost the series in 1903 and 1909.

The other teams to win were the Reds (1902), The Phillies (1906) and the Giants (1910).

1906 saw a great collapse by the Yankees as they led their division by 10 games in late July but then finished their final 48 games of the season 12-36 to drop all the way to 3rd place in the East.

The Cubs have the best overall record in the league through 10 seasons as they have 774 victories and a .553 win percentage to go along with 4 division crowns and 3 titles.

The Dodgers have struggled and have the worst record through 10 seasons with 638 victories and a .456 win percentage. They had a winning record in 1901 and 1902 but then went 7 seasons with a losing record before having a 71-69 record in 1910.

Oakland's Nap Lajoie has been the most dominant player in the first decade as he has won 5 MVP awards. No other player has won more than one.

Ty Cobb has just burst onto the scene as he won the 1910 MVP and set a new single season record with a .382 average.

Rube Waddel of Atlanta has dominated the decade with 5 Cy Young Awards. Chicago's Ed Walsh has won the last two as he has set records for ERA in a season in the process. Chicago's Jack Chesbro has also won two awards mixed within Waddell's run. The Cardinals's Christy Mathewson was the only other pitcher to win the award.

Rube Waddell has been the only pitcher to have a 15 strikeout game and he has done it twice.

Socks Seybold, Pop Foster and Buck Freeman have hit for the cycle in a game but the last one was in 1903.

There have been 9 no hitters pitched in the decade. Detroit's Charles Bender has thrown 3 of them. There has not been a perfect game.

Rube Waddell broke the 200 strikeout mark in 1909 and he broke the 200 win mark in 1910.

Christy Mathewson broke the 200 win mark in 1910.

The Dodger's Jake Bentley had a 29 game hitting streak in 1901 which is the longest hit streak of the decade. Nap Lajoie has had 4 hitting streaks over 20 games.

Nearing Milestones:
Frank Chance (Chi), Jimmy Sheckard (Oak) and Harry Steinfeldt (Chi) are 103, 110 and 161 hits away from 1500 career hits.

Sherry Magee (Chi) is 1 stolen base away from 300. Jacke Stahl (LA), Elmer Flick (Pitt) and Jimmy Slagle (Chi) are 2, 7 and 7 away from 200.

Doc White (Cin) and Eddie Plank (Oak) are 14 and 19 wins away from 200.

Decade 1 (1901-1910)

Hall of Fame Updates
There have been 2 players voted in who had pre-1901 careers. This has caused an issue with the record book as each time a new player gets introduced as a possible vote they end up being put in the record books.

I am ignoring those two as they didn't have any history in this "universe".


Notable Retirements
Pitcher Jack Chesbro has retired after the 1909 season. He retires with a 132-107 record with a career 2.55 ERA. He won 2 Cy Young awards in his career. He started his career with the Cubs but was traded to the A's before the 1905 season. His Cy Young seasons were with Oakland (the 2 seasons immediately after the trade; that's how you handle getting traded).

Waddell actually has the 6th, 7th and 8th best seasons for strikeouts as well. Johnson has done it more consistently as Waddell had a decline at the end as Johnson has been consistent and will have a longer career in this universe (actually already has).

Babe Ruth is being mismanaged by the Dodgers. They keep pitching him; giving him 90-100 games played most seasons. Only 4 seasons has he played more than 130 games and he has has put up big numbers including an MVP in one of them. Ironically the Dodgers also have Gehrig. He'll still have good numbers comparable to others in this era but nothing like what he could have had.
