Copperhead Road can seriously not lose in the 1st round..... WTF

this is a great round! I love finding old songs i haven't heard in awhile.
Like How Long! I swear Paul Carrack sang in every band of the 70s and 80s such a great singer and 96 tears has always been one of my favorites from the 60s altho...I originally thought that was the stones |

Yeah. It got a tough draw. Afternoon Delight is not, IMHO, a great song, but the whole idea of Afternoon Delight has entered the culture in a way that certainly benefits the song in a poll like this. |

Guitar Town was a bigger hit for Earle just based on Billboard rankings

There is a bunch of background information for this bracket. The list and the rankings were compiled from a number of places. And a definition was applied to eliminate any that didn't fit. Earle actually didn't really qualify as having an initial hit under the definition we used, but i left him in. You can look at the original thread if you missed it here: OHW Defined and Ranked But by the way...in general I'd agree with you that Earle isn't really what you'd consider a OHW...but as you'll see in the other thread, it's not my list, I didn't determine the songs that were used. I just compiled the information. Last edited by Breeze : 11-08-2019 at 01:15 PM. |

A little late with this, but it's closed:
Quick Summary: Few less voters this time around, but The Proclaimers vs Paper Lace received 100% of the votes possible. Only lower seed to win was J Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers and it as close. Was a bit surprised to see 2 more rock edge songs - Steve Earle and The Standells lose pretty handily to a folk and disco tune. Last edited by Breeze : 11-11-2019 at 10:29 AM. |

Born to be Alive is criminally underappreciated!

Deeper Thoughts:
The Proclaimers vs Paper Lace - I knew from the original thread Paper Lace had a nice contingent of supporters so this played out exactly like I expected. Macy Gray vs Hollywood Argyles - The only surprise here was the support Alley Oop received. Much higher than anticipated. Starland Vocal Band vs Steve Earle - This one shocked me. I realize Earle is more of an acquired taste, but it wasn't that long ago that Afternoon Delight was a punchline song. Time has definitely been kind to the Starland Vocal Band. The Heights vs Patrick Hernandez - uneventful pairing... ? vs The Casecades - I figured 96 Tears would win, and win big, but The Cascades seriously outperformed my expectations. Sandford Townsend Band vs J Frank Wilson - this was a pick'em from the start... Vicki Sue Robinson vs The Standells - another one that I didn't expect. The punk edged Standells losing pretty handily to the disco classic was interesting. Ace vs Mary Jane Girls - This one also surprised me. Ace's song still gets a good bit of play on Adult Contemporary and Classic Rock Stations, where as Mary Jane Girls are all but extinct, so I expected a pretty easy win, but that's far from how it played out. At first blush, I expected Ace had a good shot at winning the bottom half of this bracket, but following the weak showing in round 1, I don't think that's going to be the case. The match up with the Disco classic in round two will be very telling. |
