vs

Blue Jays

BLUE JAYS

Pitchers: Roy Halladay, Dave Stieb, Jimmy Key, Pat Hentgen, Juan Guzman, Jim Clancy, David Wells, Tom Henke, Duane Ward, Mark Eichhorn, Paul Quantrill

SS: Tony Fernandez
LF: George Bell
CF: Devon White
RF: Jose Bautista
DH: Edwin Encarnacion

Bench: John Olerud, Jesse Barfield, Joe Carter, Vernon Wells, Rance Mulliniks, Russell Martin

Foz Sez: Well, the Twins got a break in that they can go back to their Washington Senators days, while the Blue Jays have no such luck. But I think the key matchup is the Twins pitching against the Jays batting. I think the Twins hitting will be pretty good against the Blue Jays.. but man, the Blue Jays batting is.. well, it's going to be hit or miss. I think mostly miss.

Prediction: Twins in 5

SS: Bert Campaneris
LF: Rickey Henderson
CF: Al Simmons
RF: Reggie Jackson
DH: Jason Giambi

Bench: Mark McGwire, Eric Chavez, Jose Canseco, Carney Lansford, Khris Davis, Terry Steinbach

Rays

Pitchers: David Price, James Shields, Scott Kazmir, Blake Snell, Chris Archer, Alex Cobb, Matt Garza, Alex Colomé, Fernando Rodney, Jake McGee, Roberto Hernandez

SS: Julio Lugo
LF: Carl Crawford
CF: Kevin Kiermaier
RF: B.J. Upton
DH: Fred McGriff

Bench: Jason Bartlett, Akinori Iwamura, Matt Joyce, Rocco Baldelli, Aubrey Huff, Toby Hall

FozSez: Ricky Henderson is going to be in the Rays nightmares. When the Athletics are so loaded that even peak-era Bash Brothers are on the bench, you know the Athletics are loaded. Sorry Tampa, this may be one of the most lopsided series in the tourney.

Foz Sez: Athletics in 4.

Starters:
C: Carlton Fisk
1B: Frank Thomas

vs Royals

ROYALS

Pitchers: Bret Saberhagen, David Cone, Zack Greinke, Dennis Leonard, Kevin Appier, Mark Gubicza, Paul Splittorff, Wade Davis, Greg Holland, Jeff Montgomery, Dan Quisenberry

Starters:
C: Salvador Perez
1B: Mike Sweeney

3B: George Brett
SS: Fred Patek
LF: Alex Gordon
CF: Willie Wilson
RF: Carlos Beltrán

Bench: Hal McRae, Whit Merrifield, Lorenzo Cain, John Mayberry, Amos Otis, Darrell Porter

Foz Sez: I was kinda shocked how meh the White Sox lineup seemed to me. a lot of "oh yeah, I remember that guy" (with some more well-known folks) If you love weird pitch angles and weird pitches, then the Royals pitching staff is going to be great. I mean Saberhagen, Cone, Greinke, Quizenberry, Splittorf?

Prediction: Royals in 6

ASTROS

Pitchers: Roy Oswalt, Larry Dierker, Mike Scott, Joe Niekro, J.R. Richard, Dallas Keuchel, Nolan Ryan, Billy Wagner, Dave Smith, Joe Sambito, Brad Lidge

Starters:
C: Brad Ausmus
1B: Jeff Bagwell
2B: Craig Biggio
3B: Alex Bregman
SS: Carlos Correa
LF: Jose Cruz
CF: Cesar Cedeno
RF: Lance Berkman
DH: José Altuve

Bench: Jimmy Wynn, George Springer, Moises Alou, Terry Puhl, Bob Watson, Alan Ashby

Foz Sez: For a more recent team, the Astros certainly have a bunch of good players (as well as two of the hardest throwing pitchers of all time in Mike Scott and JR Richard. But looking over that Batlimore lineup, nearly 1-9, each and every person on that lineup can RAKE. In a short seven game series, I think the Orioles will edge it because they can have a different player be the hero every night.

Prediction: Orioles in seven

Foz Sez: I think the Sox have enough to win this series, but any team with a 1-2 punch of peak Nolan Ryan and Kenny Rogers is going to be a challenge. I say Sox in six.

Foz Sez: Eek. The Mariners have some stars. But the Yankees are a galaxy of stars. I can see POSSIBLY, MAYBE the mariners winning one of the first two with Randy Johnson and King Felix on the mound. But I wouldn't bet on it.

Prediction: Yankees in four, only because it's impossible to win a seven game series in 3.

Foz Sez: I do not know much about the Negro League Stars, so I can't really handicap their chances (honestly, this is going to always be int he realm of how they get rated), the Indians are a good team, but man, would I like to see the Negro Leaguers take on the Yankees in round 2.

Prediction: Negro Leaguers in seven

Ok, I'm going to take a break before posting the NL, because I think a ten-times-dola is more than enough

This is awesome. I really like the format.

Though, I wish they would have picked one team per player. But is that fair?

Signed up for Draft Kings. Not sure if I want to put money into though. Im a terrible gambler.

I am curios about some of the choices, like Medwick over Brock (Cardinals)

Where can I watch it if I dont have MLBtv or twitch?

Or is it free?

Missed one matchup: Angels vs Tigers

ANGELS

Pitchers: Chuck Finley, Nolan Ryan, Jered Weaver, Frank Tanana, Mark Langston, John Lackey, Mike Witt, Troy Percival, Francisco Rodriguez, Scot Shields, Bryan Harvey

Starters:
C: Brian Downing
1B: Rod Carew
2B: Bobby Grich
3B: Troy Glaus
SS: Jim Fregosi
LF: Garret Anderson
CF: Mike Trout
RF: Tim Salmon
DH: Vladimir Guerrero

Bench: Darin Erstad, Don Baylor, Howie Kendrick, Torii Hunter, Jim Edmonds, Mike Napoli

TIGERS

Pitchers: Justin Verlander, Hal Newhouser, Max Scherzer, Denny McLain, Jack Morris, Mickey Lolich, Jim Bunning, Willie Hernandez, Joel Zumaya, John Hiller, Aurelio Lopez

Starters:
C: Bill Freehan
1B: Miguel Cabrera
2B: Charlie Gehringer
3B: George Kell
SS: Alan Trammell
LF: Hank Greenberg
CF: Ty Cobb
RF: Al Kaline
DH: Willie Horton

Bench: Lou Whitaker, Harry Heilmann, Tony Phillips, Norm Cash, Kirk Gibson, Lance Parrish

Foz Sez: Damn, that Tigers Rotation. When you have a player who possibly had one of the best pitching seasons of all time (McLain in '68) as your 4th starter.. that says a LOT. The Angels are very good, and I think they'd be a favorite against most other teams, but I thing the Tigers have JUST enough pitching.

Prediction: Tigers in seven

The problem is that even if they beat the Tigers, they then have to play the Galaxy Of Stars Yankees in the second round.

Starting up the NL:

25 & UNDER STARS

Pitchers: Jack Flaherty, Mike Soroka, Walker Buehler, Shane Bieber, Lucas Giolito, German Márquez, Chris Paddack, Shohei Ohtani, Roberto Osuna, Julio Urías, Jordan Hicks

Starters:
C: Will Smith
1B: Pete Alonso
2B: Ozzie Albies
3B: Rafael Devers
SS: Carlos Correa
LF: Juan Soto
CF: Ronald Acuña Jr.
RF: Cody Bellinger
DH: Yordan Alvarez

Bench: Victor Robles, Gleyber Torres, Yoán Moncada, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Fernando Tatis Jr., Adley Rutschman

vs

PHILLIES

Pitchers: Robin Roberts, Steve Carlton, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Cole Hamels, Curt Schilling, Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Tug McGraw, Jonathan Papelbon, Ron Reed, Jim Konstanty

Starters:
C: Darren Daulton
1B: Ryan Howard
2B: Chase Utley
3B: Mike Schmidt
SS: Jimmy Rollins
LF: Chuck Klein
CF: Richie Ashburn
RF: Bobby Abreu
DH: Dick Allen

Bench: Johnny Callison, Sherry Magee, Greg Luzinski, Gavvy Cravath, Larry Bowa, Carlos Ruiz

Foz Sez: I think the Phillies rotation is insane (Curt Schilling as a #5?). The U-25 team is decent enough, but they're going to regress back to the mean, because since they're taking the best three years, some clunkers or not so good seasons are going to sneak in just from lack of seasons played. I have worries about the Phillies hitting going forward (strange from a team with Mike Schmidt), but they'll have more than enough to win this one.

Prediction: Phillies in 5.

LF: Cleon Jones
CF: Carlos Beltrán

Bench: Howard Johnson, John Olerud, Mookie Wilson, Yoenis Céspedes, Tommie Agee, Gary Carter

Foz Sez: Man, for a team that's only been around half as long (or so) as the Cubs, the Mets have a pretty good all-time roster, especially in the pitchers, but I think the Cubs have more hitting then the Mets and will ride that longevity advantage to the win.

Prediction: Cubs in 6

Foz Sez: The Marlins are not so bad. definitely not as bad as I thought they would be, considering their recentness and tendency to have one or two good seasons at a time before selling everything off. But they don't have anywhere near the pitching or hitting of the Braves. This could be a sweep, but I'll give one to the Marlins.

Prediction: Braves in 5

Foz Sez: When I looked at the roster for the Dodgers, I was kinda surprised about all the Brooklyn players. I mean, the Dodgers have been a very good team or better for large swathes of their time in LA too. They have more than enough for the Padres, but the Padres will not make it easy for them.

Prediction: Dodgers in 6

Foz sez: Well, this is a hidden upset candidate. I think rosters wise, the Nationals/Expos come out 2nd best in just about every metric, but the Nationals can win if the stars are right. They have several players who can win you a game off their backs, in a seven game series, those add up. But I think the Big Red Machine moves on.

Prediction: Reds in 6

Foz sez: I have to admit, I was looking at the all-time Pirates roster and going.. "meh". For a best of all-time team for a team with the history of the Pirates, there really isn't as much there as a bunch of the other teams in this tourney. Then again, they received as close as you can get as a bye into the next round, playing one of the youngest teams in the history of MLB. Maybe I'm just down on the Pirates, but they'll have to step up their game to go any further than just beating the D-backs.

Prediction: Pirates in 5

It’s an interesting tournament indeed. I’m not sure I agree with the roster construction with guys being on multiple teams, but whatever.

As far as ratings go, it’s supposedly based on each individuals top 3 seasons.

As far as my picks to win: Negro League All Stars over Giants in 6

Sleeper teams: Twins ( because of Walter Johnson) and Naxpos.

Astros should be in the NL, Brewers in the AL. More years in those leagues.

Short rant over.

I'd like to know more about the stats they'll be using in the simulation. Will it be career stats for the years played with that team, peak year with that team, or some limited number of peak years to eliminate early and end of career valleys?

They said it was top 3 seasons with a team in some article on MLB.com

Dang. Game Seven. The Red Sox had blown a 3-0 lead, and came back from 2-0 down to tie it up, and bases loaded with Yaz (who had come in when Ortiz was pinch run for in the seventh).

Twitch

Crush.

Crush Real Good.

Sox win Game 7, 6-2.

Ditto the Orioles, though their pitching staff was suspect. That lineup though, wow.

Best 3 seasons for each team it looks like.

The announcers missed Nettles as a defensive replacement for Arod and not as a PH.

Thats okay, just an observation.

I thought they would do all the games.

But I enjoyed watching the Yanks win. Yogi with the 2 run homer that was the difference after the Mariners couldnt turn a double play on the previous batter.

Had the Cards gotten Yogi instead of Gargiaola, I wonder how many more Ws championships they would have had

Charlie Hough out-dueling Pedro in game 5 to extend the series. I think that's a bug.

Edit: Not liking the Sox's chances against that Blue Jay powerhouse after this display...

FWIW, I hate the White Sox lineup. Shoeless Joe should be in LF with Baines as DH and Ordonez in RF or maybe I’m dumb

Well. I went 10-6 in round 1. Not bad, but not great either

The AL QuarterFinals are set (Yankees-Astros, Red Sox-White Sox)

If I had to pick:

Yankees in 6
Red Sox in 6

So, we know three of the four teams in the Semifinals.

AL Championship
Yankees-Red Sox

NL Championship
Reds (defeated Cardinals in Game 7 in 12 innings) vs Brewers/Dodgers (also going to be a game 7)

Drysdale gets out of a couple serious jams, and the Dodgers spread out 9 hits to shut out Milwaukee 3-0 in game 7.

I like the matchups. Sox-Yankees and Dodgers-Reds.
