Most Iconic Sports Highlights that Are Not Part of a Game
Today is the anniversary of the Pine Tar Incident and George Brett's respectful disagreement with the decision to call him out.
George Brett and the pine tar incident - YouTube His run from the dugout is, IMO, iconic. And pretty damn funny, too. I think that most sports fans of a certain age recognize and appreciate this "highlight." Which got me thinking, what are some other iconic/classic/awesome sports highlights that are not highlights of the actual game being played? (I thought about making this a Mount Rushmore, but I think it might work better at this point to just collect examples.) |

My thoughts first go to post game interviews:
"Playoffs!? Don't talk about playoffs!" "They were who we thought they were!" "You play to win the game!"

If Nolan Ryan/Ventura counts, then the Cantona Kung fu kick into the stands has to be on the list too.
Also yeah, malice at the palace as well as the hockey version with Mike Milbury beating a fan with his own shoe. In fact some good hockey ones - Rob Ray and Tie Domi beating on fans also definitely qualifies. |

I know it's somewhat tainted now, but when McGwire hit 62, and afterwards he ran into the stands and hugged Maris's kids.
Cal Ripkin running around the field, high fiving fans, after breaking the Lou Gehrig's Iron Man record. Pee Wee Reese walking across the diamond and putting his arm over Jackie Robinson when he was being heckled.

Do you count calling a game? Miracle on Ice?
The England win in the World Cup with the "they think it's all over, well it is now". "The Giants win the pennant!"

Hard to believe that there has been no mention of the OJ chase to this point. That might actually be number one on the list.

And a few more...
Nancy Kerrigan... Tonya Harding... Why? The Andrés Escobar murder in Columbia in the middle of the on-going World Cup, a few days after Columbia was eliminated. Man, 1994 was an odd year for these kind of incidents. While I'm not a big soccer fan, I have to think that the Fall of the Condor (aka El Maracanazo) deserves mention, where Chilean goalkeeper Roberto Rojas took a dive against Brazil after pretending to be struck by a flare that a fan had thrown, causing Chile to walk off the pitch. |

This actually made me think of a related one, and that led me to a legit contender IMO. The comment made me think of Jim Craig draped in the flag looking into the stands for his dad, but that made me think of an even more serious contender: Jim Valvano running around looking for somebody to hug

This is part of an Englishman’s sporting fabric - originally on the radio, but the images might help give a bit of context. No idea whether it will work with a US audience

IMHO, the criteria should exclude anything that happened during a game/competition, since they are 'part of a game'.
Using that basis, in Mt. Rushmore format: Munich Hijackers OJ Chase Sidd Finch Gretzky traded to Los Angeles

Was addressed with in the Pee Wee Reese nod, but can't believe Jackie Robinson signing his contract with Branch Rickey has not been mentioned.
Also the trial of the 1919 Black Sox Babe Ruth's trade to the Yankees, which impacted the game more than any other trade in history. |
