Does Indonesia Count as Asia for Bucket List Purposes?

I want to visit every continent and I've not yet been to Asia. I am considering a visit to Bali, in Indonesia. Does that count? Thoughts?

What wouldn't it? No one really considers it Oceania.

FWIW, the geography study deck I use groups Indonesia as part of Asia (though interestingly Papua New Guinea with Australia/Oceania), so sure.

I dunno. If you’re content to be in the tiny % of Asia that’s not in the northern hemisphere, sure.

Asia is so massive and this is what you want to consider it?

I rule no. It's got so much more to offer.

I actually had to go to a world map for this one. Not to see where it is, but rather to see how it struck me when I looked, my gut reaction to "Is this Asia?"

Unfortunately, that's a no.

However, you can claim it as such on technical grounds with no major problem IMO.

It's definitely Asia. They are ... acquiring bits of "Oceania" in Papua New Guinea, but Indonesia is a South-East Asian country.

And an early apology for the Australians you meet in Bali. It's a quick flight (comparatively) from a particular part of Australia, and so typically is full of what we call "cashed up bogans". Not sure what the US equivalent of that is - cashed up rednecks? Assuming things go back to normal by the time you get there, I'd say avoid Kuta beach and head to the North of Bali instead.

Mainly Perth, but Darwin also. Bali (Kuta) and Thailand (Bangkok/Patong) are the two major tourist spots from that side of Australia. Don't get me wrong - Bali is great, just don't spend too much time in Kuta. I guess you could compare it to something like Cancun, except less flashy resorts and a more varied age of foreigners.

For sightseeing check out Ubud, and for beaches as nice as anywhere in the world head south of Kuta (Bingin/Nusa Dua to name two - there are dozens more).

Culturally you will be in Asia, make no mistake about it, especially the further you head out of town.

What would it be considered if not Asia? It's not going to be Australia, right?

It never occurred to me that there were parts of the world that aren't considered part of a continent but I guess that's possible.

Speaking of which, for the continent game - what is New Zealand?
French Polynesia?
Hawaii?
Greenland/Iceland?

I would look at it from a sports perspective-do they participate in Asian regional sports as a country? Yes they do, so I would certainly consider them being in Asia

Is it mainland Asia? No
Is it Asia? Yes

I consider my transfer in Auckland as counting been in New Zealand. I was in their airport for an hour. Good enough for me.

A lady I work with told me she was going to my part of the world for her vacation. I assumed she was going to Edinburgh, or maybe London, but she was going to Bali.

Not sure whether she had no idea where I'm from, or had no idea where Bali is.

SI

It's bound to happen as Continents are large expanses of land.

NZ and Polynesia are generally referred to as part of Oceania (which is not a continent, but a region).

Greenland is part of North America and Iceland is part of Europe.

Oceania is not technically a continent but I think you could make the argument that the Indies are more Oceania than Asia. Some parts are more arguable that others like New Guinea. Bali is in the heart and is a long distance from the shore.

Depends who you believe.

The CIA world factbook says they're North America, wiki says it's "physiographically a part of the continent of North America", but they took part on the 2018 European Badminton Championships.

One of the top dive sites in the world, the Silfra fissure in Iceland's Thingvellir National Park is a crack between two tectonic plates. It's the only spot on Earth where you can swim directly between the North American and European continents

Abe, if you feel it counts, count it. It's you bucket list.
If you feel the need for an obscure reason to visit Eurasia again, then don't make this count.

Everything else is just politically discussion. For example, Wikipedia pages in different languages claim contradicting things about what is and isn't a continent or a country.

Based on that map, I'd say yes that Bali, Indonesia is part of Asia as it is located on the continental crust that makes up Asia, with the Java Trench running just south of the islands which separates it form the open ocean and other trenches separating the Asian continental crust from the Australian continental crust.

Bali just makes it, but it's part of the Asian continental crust as opposed to an island (like Timor-Leste) that's on the open sea between two continental crusts.

Poor Geography Confession Time

In looking up where Indonesia was, I noticed that Brunei is in that Asia/Oceania region.

I had heard of the "Sultan of Brunei" before, and sultan sounds Middle-Easterny, so I had always assumed that Brunei was one of those smallish Middle Eastern countries.

Though the "Middle East" is also in Asia (which is why I tend to refer to it as West Asia), so if you just said Asia you'd be covered .
