How does this game compare to MOH? I know MOH is years old now, but in terms of gameplay and graphics MOH has been the best WWII arcade PC title I've played (although I must admit I'm not much of a gameplay/graphic oriented gamer).
Also, how does MP work in COD? I'm guessing there are deathmatches, team DM, objective-based teamwork, etc...but on the team matches how many are allowed to be on one side (I think MOH's limit was 64)? Thanks... |

Call of Duty is basically MOH with twice the action and half the length.

You say "half the length" of MOH, approx. how many hours of gameplay does that translate to? Just trying to see if it is worth it to go buy as I already am crunched for time...

I don't have a good estimate on hours, but I can confirm the solo game is rather shorter than would have been expected. However, as referred to, the multi-player gives it great longevity and works quite well. It is not so much like you are doing missions, although there are specific team objectives, but it works well as a team melee sort of deal.
I am not very good, so I get killed early and often. If you happen to see me out there, be gentle. |

From everything I've heard, the single player portion can be finished in about 10 hours..haven't played it, so can't confirm.

I haven't played much of the game yet (maybe one hour single player, one hour multiplayer), but some initial impressions...
Single player is similar to Medal of Honor, except that the experience is much more intense. In Medal of Honor, I felt most of the time that it was me against the German army. Sure, there are a few scenarios where you work with some other allied troops, but your troops were useless morons, and I pretty much just let them kill themselves. The notable exception would have to be the Omaha beach level, where to a certain degree you feel like you are a small part of a much bigger battle. In Call of Duty, the first four levels that I played all had at least as much, if not more, intensity than the Omaha beach landing scene in MoH. The game does an incredible job of making you feel like you are a one tiny soldier in a big war. Your fellow soldiers are fighting actively, there are Germans everywhere, artilley landing around you, parachutes falling through the night sky, planes gettig shot down over your head. It really is amazing. The firefights are utter chaos: there is so much going on: tracers flying in both directions, people yelling and running and dying, shells going off. Most of the first few levels I spent cowering in fear, not knowing what the hell to do. I felt like such a rookie. The graphics and sound are phenomenal: I can't tell you how many times I physically crouched down in front of my computer in the middle of intense action. The downside to all this, at least playing on the "normal" difficulty, is that it almost seemed as if I were insignifcant in the game. The game, like MoH, is linear, but unlike MoH, things seemed to move of their own accord, and I pretty much just ran along for the first two levels not really feeling like I had to do something except stay alive. I think it was the third level where the game creates a situation where your troops wait for you to perform a certain action (knock out a maching gun next, for example) for your troops to advance. I think I'm going to start over again on the hardest setting, too, as on the level I was on, there were lots of medicine kits available, the Germans died with one shot, and I could take a lot of damage. I think it would be more fun to try these levels at a harder setting. I played multiplayer for about an hour, and it was fun. My only experience with a similar multiplayer experience was about five hours of Unreal II, so I'm probably not the best one to judge, but I had a blast playing last night. I played some search and destroy (go knock out some artillery pieces, or a tank in a warehouse), some deathmatch (go kill people), and just a bit of retrieval (go get something and bring in back). The death matches are utter chaos. The search and destroy (die once and you're done) were more tense than they were chaotic, and I didn't play much retrieval to get a sense of the differences. The first half hour I absolutely sucked: I killed two people, one of whom was a teammate, and died about 20 times. The search and destroy missions were hilarious: I'd walk around, hear the crack of a sniper rifle, fall over dead, wait for the mission to end, then do the same thing again. It took me 15 minutes to get to the point where I would see the person who killed me. After about a half hour though, I started to get a better sense of what was going on, and started to log some kills. By the end of the hour I was probably getting killed twice for every person I killed, but I did manage to have a few battles where I ended up on the plus side of the equation. There were quite a few big servers (50 people on board), but I don't know what the limit is. The levels for multiplayer seem well designed. I especially liked the Russian factory works level; there are oodles of places to go up, over, around, etc. A big part of doing well in multiplayer seems to be getting to know the nuances of the levels. Some of the people were amazingly good at the game, but there were enough people that sucked like me, so you'll get a chance to rack up some kills even if you're a complete beginner. I've heard the single player game is short, but even if it's only 10 hours long, I'd say it's worth it if you can find the game for $30 or so. If anyone else here has the game, it'd be fun to try to some multiplayer together. I'll probably mess around with the game again this evening. |

Thanks for the info GB... You sold me, I'll probably go buy it sometime in the next few weeks. I saw it at Best Buy today for 49.99, but I'm sure someplace online has it a bit cheaper or with at least some type of promotion.

Godzilla Blitz made a great review, the only downsides are that is not so long and that it's heavy scripted so if you replay a level all will be the same. But as single player experience for first time on the harder settings...............IT'S THE FU**ING WAR!!!!!!!! tons of guys firing and dying around you, artillery and bombs falling from everywhere, etc. The russian missions are exactly like the film Enemy at the gates, you're given a set of bullets and need to find a weapon before you can fire, in the meantime all is a chaos of fire, bombs and guys dying around you, really amazing, i'm really impressed about it as war experience.
In the other hand, i'm a huge Operation Flashpoint fan, if you want realism COD can't compare with OP, if you to feel that you're into the ww2 movies that you enjoyed, this is your game.

I have to echo our Spanish friend's statements. For me, Operation Flashpoint has the best "feel" to it. My uniformed experience is limited to becoming an Eagle Scout, but the way OpFlash plays is incredible. That being said, Call of Duty is a blast to play! The levels are incredible, and I too was cowering in fear, especially after coming too close to mortar rounds. This game is easily the top 1st person shooter of the year. I also agree that we should find kindred FOFC spirits to join together and see what we can do with the multiplayer facets of the game.

I'm still hacking away at multiplayer. Finally, finally, finally, I think I'm getting a little bit better. Played nine maps in an hour tonight, and two games I killed more than I died, two games I tied, and five games I got killed more than I killed (but all except one were close, and over the course of the hour I ended up -11; this is normally what I was after one map a week ago). Still crappy, I know, but it sure is fun. I haven't touched the single player game except for the first hour I played.
The Pavlov map, which represents a cluster of torn up Russian buildings, simply must be experienced. It is absolutely amazing to fight room-to-room in these things, with snipers popping shells through any openings in the outside walls. Intense stuff. The game is stunningly beautiful too. I was playing in Dawnville (half destroyed French town, maybe) the other night in what must have been a 15-on-15 deathmatch, and we had about seven or eight people lined up against a wall, firing on enemy positions dug in down the street. I was in a church on my way to the wall, when I just stopped and watched the view. We had one guy roaring away on a machine gun, three or four guys hammering away with Thompsons, and the rest moving back and forth along the wall, which was getting just peppered with enemy fire. Somewhere on the other side of the street, the Germans had a sniper dug in, and man, this guy was good. One of our guys would peek up over the wall to fire and, ssssssnip, his head would snap back in a puff of red mist, then his body would drop limp to the ground. This guy must have picked off four of our guys in less than a minute. The thing that got me about the whole thing was that the view, looking down that wall, equalled anything I have seen or heard in a movie, and here I was playing an active part in it. The graphics really are that amazing. If anyone else here is playing, it would be fun to play together. Highly recommended if you like multiplayer action with a WWII flavor. |

I should add, though, that I agree with the people that are saying this isn't a "realistic" simulation of WWII combat. People can jump far and never get tired, and it's often to your advantage to jump a lot when crossing open terrain, so you get some combat scenes that look like invasion of the bunnies. It also seems that people can chuck grenades much furhter than you can in real life, and that makes for some interesting yet unrealistic strategies on some on some of the maps. If those things bother you, then this game isn't for you.
I don't really mind the bunny thing, but I wish it wasn't there. Seems silly to me, and looks dumb. Too bad they couldn't add some kind of fatigue factor to cut down on its usage. Minimum cpu specs are P3 600Mhz if you're running XP. |

I already finished it, it's too short for solo playing, i hope that as the editor has been released, tons of new developers will create more scenarios or campaigns. I really enjoyed the first missions and the russian ones, i felt i was in the film "Enemy at the gates" It's not realist if you look at weapons and jump etc, but about inmersing you on the ww2, you're really there, try it with a surround system and you will become crazy.

I've been playing this a bit since getting it. The game looks great, although I haven't tried multiplayer yet, I'm a bit afraid to.
If we could get a few on multiplayer together that would be great.

Have you gotten to the British missioner yet, specifically the one where you are storming an air base. It's total chaos with shots being fired out you and your group from rooftops and the ground, plus dive bombers that you have to pick off with an anti-aircraft gun.
Another tough one is a mission where you are holding off what seem like endless counterattacks after you take a bridge. It's a hair raising experience trying to rush across the bridge, you're basically a moving target for the Germans until you get to the other side. I learned the best way is just to go balls-out and storm across to a safer position. The visuals and sound of this game are second to none at the moment. The sounds of the bullets ripping into the ground, or whatever is near you, is enough to get the blood pumping. |

Yeah, I just got this as well. GREAT game. I just finished the 'defending the bridge' mission. DAMN that was hard. I must have died 10 times in that mission. Running to the flak gun and then diving for cover after you knock off the tank leads to you being very exposed.
You also gotta love the slowwing down of time when a mortar hits tooo close for comfort .

There is one subtle difference in this compared to MoH that really changes the way you go about things.
The guys in your squad don't have a deathwish, they can stay alive without needing you to play hero all the time. Actaully, if you try to be the gung-ho, hero type, you die fast and often. For the 1st couple levels I was goin MoH, all out. Now I'm playing it smart and using some tactics and it works great. My problem with MoH was the simple fact that tactics went out the window and it was every man for himself.

WOW! Felt like I was in a movie. It was amazing! There were a few times mortars fell real close (resulting in slooooow motion ).
