Where to get good chess set.

Not sure if there are any chess players but am looking to get my 14 year old a chess set for his bday since he likes to 0lay. Issue is Amazon pears to have nothing but crappy foreign knockoffs that look good in the pictures but real reviews show they are low quality. So any legit places to by a decent wooden chess set for $100 or less that isn’t trash?

Wow, I haven't thought about chess sets in ages. I don't know what is even produced these days.

When I was a kid I had a "Cardinal Chess Cabinet" - tapered wooden folding board (which was also the case), felt inlays, ribbons to hold in the pieces when stored. Pieces were wood with a felt bottom and had weights in them. I'm sure it wasn't all that expensive, but it felt like a quality enough set for me.

Looks like Cardinal was acquired in 2015; I don't know what their quality is these days.

My family was not that into chess, but one of the nicer things we owned when i was growing up was a marble chess set. My aunt had gone to Italy and got it for my dad as a present.

It was beautiful, but it was kind of wasted on us b/c none of us were chess people.

Thanks I was looking at those but those are a bit too nice for a teen chess placer:-) I could see getting one of those for the house /myself as a father days gift.

I saw a chess set in a shop window in New Orleans, absurdly out of my price range (I think it was $2400) but really striking. I went back a couple more times on subsequent trips and looked at it again. It became a "must stop by" thing when in the area.

My last trip I brought my wife and kids by, told them about the chess set, but...it was gone. I guess someone is happy to have it, I'm saddened that it's no longer "mine" to visit.
