clever bots
two popped up today... accounts registered months ago (making my quick insta-ban tool irrelevant) and they seemed to take words from an existing thread and rephrase them into a semi-coherent new post, then occasionally adding in a link to some dumb shit
i mean, i guess i get it - there's money in having links anywhere point to a site, so that's what these accomplish, but... i just wish this degree of ingenuity and effort could be focused on something that had a purpose (he notes with irony this frustration is being vented on a site dedicated to the minutia of fiddling with tiny invisible football men in a defunct game franchise) |

If you lose a spam post double what you post last time. Continue to double what you post last time.

Since my wife is newly tenured, we've had a few years in the world of publish or perish.
There is no doubt in my mind that the vast majority of "academic" journals these days are a sophisticated form of exactly this type of bot. Defunct, huh? Dead, buried, gone. Sounds like a great word for a proverbial tombstone. |
