Janelle Monae - TheArchandroid released

I have really been into the amazingly talented and creative Janelle Monae since she released her scarily good small album Metropolis: The Chase Suite a couple of years ago. I heard her interviewed on NPR about her new album last week and it really looks to pick up where the last one left off - more science fiction inspired R&B drawn from all kinds of influences. It's available on iTunes right now!

Also if you are not familiar with her check out her videos which are unbelievable!

I could watch her original video Many Moons about a hundred times and the video for a song on her new album Tightrope is also excellent.

Thank you. Sometimes I feel like I lost touch with music since there always seems to be so much I am not aware of in terms of music.

Oh and nice cameo from the Haitian from Heroes (yes, it's sad I don't know his name).

Thanks. I heard an NPR story on her first CD, but I lost track of her name.

Found the link to the NPR story I heard on her recently, with a bit about her background and songwriting style. She's a trip, that's for sure.

Am I the only one who noticed that the opening portion of the first song (just before the 1:00 mark) is the same exact melody to a Pointer Sisters' Sesame Street skit from my youth? I'm assuming it's intentional.

It's called sampling MBBF and it's intentional.

I was getting a very strong "Hey Ya!" vibe on the first one. It could easily be done via mash up. The break down for "Hey Ya!" would be all too easy to fit into her song. It would be better if I had just heard the song itself. I really liked the second video though.

canīt be too much of a coincidence, browsing her wiki it seems like sheīs been kind of mentored by Big Boi of outcast. Although technically itīs Andre 300 that is similar to her style.
I also find it having quite a few similaritys with Gnarls Barkley (Smiley Faces especially), f.e on her track "cold war".

Surprisingly those underlying "structures" are much more aparent than other female artists that iīm sure are dubbed as similar (santogold, m.i.a.), propably because her voice is so much more pronounced than any of those singers.

But heck, nothing bad about mixing ingredients if the end result rocks like that

any of you loving this might want to check out Nneka who is imo similarly brilliant and had her first US album released recently (mix of her 2 european albums).

This is really, really terrific stuff. She's really captivating. Thanks for the thread, I would have had trouble picking this up out of the usual lengthier music thread.

i agree. I thought there were parts were her vocals lacked a bit, but at the end she really hit the notes well. Clearly, she can dance.

This might be the first time that I personally felt like listening to the music was, for me, an unsatisfying experience. I think the music is pretty good, the singles are very well conceived, but it's the videos that bring it all together (in both the cases linked above). I'm not much of a music video guy overall, but this is probably a first for me that I'm totally hooked on the video itself.

So Janelle has been nominated for two Grammy awards - one for the Archandroid album and one for the video performance on Tightrope.

I don't see the one for video, but I see one for best urban/alternative performance.

Odd to see Cyndi Lauper up for best traditional blues album.

I wonder how she feels about being the voice of KMart's back to school. Someone with so much talent repping a company without a hint of talent.

Somewhere her, or her people are trying to get her to break through. She had one of the best reviewed albums of the year and yet she did little in terms of breaking into the mainstream.

Fresh Faces May 2017 - Marie Claire May 2017 Cover Stars

On respecting women: "People have to start respecting the vagina. Until every man is fighting for our rights, we should consider stopping having sex. I love men. But evil men? I will not tolerate that. You don't deserve to be in my presence. If you're going to own this world and this is how you're going to rule this world, I am not going to contribute anymore until you change it. We have to realize our power and our magic. Because I am all about black-girl magic, even though I'm standing with all women. But this year? This year, I am so carefree black girl."

Ha. Glad she's getting to be her full self. The new music is great and you can tell she's been influenced by Prince.

I went to see her in concert a couple of weeks ago in Detroit. I had never heard any of her music before. The show was fantastic. Really one of the best I've ever been to. She's a great performer and the energy from the crowd was amazing. I really, really enjoyed it and have started listening to her stuff. It's great, especially her latest CD.

If you haven't seen her promotions of the new album, you should probably check it out. Just make sure your wife is not in the room.
I swear, she looks like was carved in stone.

Which I think is incredibly ironic considering I think her attire at the beginning of her career was ultra modest because she did not want to distract from her music etc etc

Money talks I guess
