IWS #254 Results
1. Stupid has scrimped and saved for years so he and his family can go on their once-in-a-lifetime big vacation. What city will be the centerpiece of their trip?
Orlando 5 Paris 4 Rome 1 Honolulu 1 New York 1 I struggled with the framing of this question. In my head, I had Paris, and I had initially thought of saying Stupid and his partner. But then I thought that Paris would be the runaway answer. So I said family, and that got us a good split between Disney and Europe, which I do think are the two most common once-in-a-lifetime destinations from the American perspective. 2. Stupid’s job has him travel a lot. And he enjoys taking recreational trips on his own. He was thinking it over the other day, and he realized that between work travel and fun travel, he has visited 49 of the 50 U.S. States. What is the one state he has yet to find a reason to go to? Alaska 10 North Dakota 2 I considered adding "(other than Alaska and Hawaii)" to this question, and I wish that I had to get a better spread. I was hoping that "has yet to find a reason to go to" would cause more people to pick boring states, but only two of you picked up that bread crumb. 3. Like many people planning a trip, Stupid has to decide whether it makes sense to drive or fly to his destination. What is the distance away (in miles) beyond which Stupid decides it makes more sense to fly than drive? 500 6 250 2 100 1 200 1 300 1 1000 1 Stupid loves his round numbers. And 500 does feel right to me in terms of the actual answer. I will note that our 100 mile answer came from Europe, which makes sense to me. Driving 100 miles is nothing here. I'm sure that there are Americans who've driven 100 miles for dinner. 4. Inspired by some shows on The Discovery Channel, Stupid has decided to take his next trip to a (United States) National Park. But Stupid does not like big crowds. What park does he choose to go to, wanting to maximize cool stuff to see/do and minimize crowds? Denali 5 Yellowstone 2 Death Valley 1 Yosemite 1 Grand Canyon 1 Big Bend 1 Glacier Bay 1 This turned into an eliminator. Denali is a good answer. 5. Stupid has decided to make his next vacation a sports pilgrimage. Around what iconic place does he decide to orient his trip? Wrigley Field 4 Fenway Park 3 Yankee Stadium 2 Churchill Downs 1 Madison Square Garden 1 Football Hall of Fame 1 Very interesting to get only one football-based answer. Baseball is still the sport for pilgrimages, it seems. 6. Due to weather delays, it looks like Stupid is going to be stuck at the airport for a while. At least there is a decent airport bar near his gate. How many drinks does Stupid have while he is killing time? Five 7 Three 3 Two 2 I wanted to pit the attraction of round numbers (or half of a round number) against the idea that five drinks in the airport is a hell of a lot of drinks. Round numbers won the day (or more people than I realize are super drunk in airports) THE RESULTS Doing a staycation this year Glengoyne 30 MIJB#19 70 Todzilla 560 sterlingice 720 DanGarion 800 Looking forward to 2 weeks at the beach this Summer ntndeacon 1,400 Quiksand 2,880 Panerd 3,600 cartman 5,040 flere-imsaho 7,000 We're going to Disney World! For the record I knock out 5 drinks at the airport without a delay. Don't judge me.

Stupid often doesn't read any of the fine print, either. Stupid often hears "what National Park?" and zones out after that. Plus, Stupid had just answered Alaska to an earlier question, and that doesn't hurt for a wide open question, either. |

Man, I had Paris but then went Rome. D'oh. I overthought Stupid.
Then again, I was toast as I totally whiffed on Alaska for #2. Like I figured if Stupid travels a lot, Stupid would have gone to Alaska and Hawaii. I thought it would come down to something like North Dakota or something like Mississippi/Alabama. Also, 5 drinks is a lot of drinks SI
