One and Done - 2023 Edition

It’s been a while since I’ve had a good thorough look into a draft of FOF8. That’s why I’m doing my own One and Done challenge.

The rules are similar to the forum challenge from 15(!) years ago:

- Emptry Cupboard
- Three years of picks (Available to be traded for this year)
- Build your team only with players from the draft. (No Signings, No future draft picks)

The scoring will be as follows:

- 100 x Cumulative winning percentage, rounded down
- 1 x Number of games won
- ½ x Numbers of game tied, rounded down
- 2 points for a conference title
- 2 points for a championship

The original thread can be found here: The "One and Done Challenge" - Front Office Football Central

Draft preparation

We'll be controlling the Los Angeles Rams

It’s time to dive deeper into the prospects. I’m going to break them down by position and offer my thoughts on them.

I have chemistry in my chart, although chemistry is turned off. I normally find this to be an unfair advantage for me, and usually turns it off. I forgot to turn it on until I was deep in my draft preparation.

Our rating will be our valuation of where the players will provide value for us. 1 means 1st round etc. 0 means top of the first.

After trading back and fourth we start the draft with the following picks:

1.3 - 1.4 - 1.5
2.1 - 2.3 - 2.4 - 2.5
3.1 - 3.3 - 3.4 - 3.5
4.1 - 4.4 - 4.5
5.1 - 5.3 - 5.4
6.1 - 6.3 - 6.5
7.1 - 7.3 - 7.4 - 7.5

25 picks and in a great position to move up and down.

OFFENSE

Looks like a weak QB draft. While we’d love to see Dillon Teal on our uniform, we think it’s a reach to pick him in the top-20. If he falls to the bottom of the first round, we might take a gamble. Our number one target Is Ohio States Deron Thweat. He’s rated as the 5th best QB. Because of the weak class we should be able to get him in the 4th or 5th round. Our backup plan is dual-threat QB Wesley Henson.

Justin Linville looks like the best of the bunch. He’s a combine skipper but looks like a stud. The opposite can be said about consensus number 1 Damian McClellan. He had an amazing combine but looks only decent on tape. We’ll be happy with either of the first 3 running backs. We are leaning towards a running back combo at the moment. Power Back Bajorek and one of the small guys Kinney and Cook.

Vance looks like a great offensive weapon, but he’ll probably be gone by the time he falls to our evaluation. Enis and Leatherwood are both decent pickups in the later rounds.

In my opinion a stud TE is a great addition to a good team. However we can’t afford that luxury. There’s simply too many positions of more importance than the TE. Lavorin does look great though. Our target could be 6’6 Hinrichs from Pittsburgh. He looks decent but with a pretty high static bars and a decent combine. He’s also ranked 10th among TE’s so he should be available in the latter part of the draft

Unpolished Alvin Rude from Wisconsin is our scouts top pick. He’s only ranked 3rd among WR’s but he could be one of our top picks. Besides the top picks not really a lot of talent at WR. We’ll target Grady James and Tanner Rasmussen in the later rounds.

Glen Doty would be a great addition to a stacked team, but our 2nd round valuation on him are due to the position he plays. He’ll probably be gone by the second round. If not we might go for him. A couple of guys interest us down the ranks. But not really anyone that stands out.

A brilliant class of guards. There’s a couple of first round grades and Jamie Schultz looks like a perennial pro bowler for the next 10 years. How high are we willing to take a G? Let’s find out. Overall we should be able to find value in the lower rounds.

This Tackle class is stacked with both top talent, mid level talent and potential good players in the lower rounds. We could and should go for a T in the 1st round. Huffman and Ingram looks like decent value in the middle rounds. Down the ranks Hicks and Hooper catches our eye.

SPECIAL TEAMS

We’re probably picking up UDFA on these positions. These five players might make us reconsider if they are available.

DEFENSE

Obviously we need to figure out which kind of defense we want to play and match the players to this scheme.

Depending on the fit both Choisser and Heuring look like studs. Heuring are a bit of a gamble with high volatility and low PH. Hampton looks like a very good pass rusher in the later rounds. There’s a lot of top talent in this position, but not really much depth

A lot deeper than the DE position. A lot of the players might switch to a 3-4 DE. There’s a lot of potential boomers in the middle rounds. Guys with pretty good static bars and good combine scores. Moreau, Greer and undersized Knechtel looks interesting

A lot of top-level talent. We have 5 players with second round grades. We’ll probably target one of those early to be our captain of the defense. Hartl look like an old-school run stuffer and could be our favourite of the bunch.

Decent group of players. Not as talented as the inside linebackers. A couple of players capable of becoming decent pass rushers out of the 3-4. We’ll be targeting Goodwin or Sterritt in the lower rounds.

A good group of players. We could target Jacobs or Gaylor in the first round. There’s a plethora of potential stars in the middle rounds. We’ll probably target McIntyre and maybe undersized Cottrill.

Incredible group of safeties. We could get a top player in the bottom of the first or top of the second. In the lower rounds there’s a bunch of guys that look like candidates for a switch to CB. We’d like Blalock to fall to the second round and will target at least 2 guys later in the draft.

Interviews:

We interview players we’re seriously considering in the first round and Quarterbacks. These are the picks we can’t afford to miss on.

We interview the following players:

QB Toliver - Hard to read
QB Teal - Hard to read
QB Thweat - Underrated
QB Henson - Very overrated
WR Rude - As Scouted
WR MacClellan - Hard to read
G Schultz - Underrated
T Jeffries - Overrated
T Kato - As scouted
CB Jacobs - Overrated
CB Gaylor - Very overrated
S Clemons - As scouted

Naturally this adds to our interest in Deron Thweat. Hopefully we’ll be able to get him in one of the middle rounds. Jamie Schultz looks more and more like a top-5 pick despite the position. This is going to be tough.

ROUND 1

1.1 Las Vegas Raiders select QB Toliver
1.2 Dallas Cowboys select RB Linville
1.3 Los Angeles Rams are on the clock..

The best player just fell to us at third. DE Choisser is a certain stud. Size-wise he’s a bit of a tweener. If he’s not able to shed weight we’re looking at a 4-3 DT or 3-4 DE at third. Also the modern game calls for offense, but can we really pass on this guy? There’s lot of guys left so we decide to trade out of the pick.

We send 1.3 to Denver for 1.9 + 2.8 + 3.7 + 4.6 + 7.10. That means we have 29 picks in the draft.

1.3 Denver Broncos select QB Maloney
1.4 Los Angeles Rams are on the clock..

Yet again we trade out of the 4th pick. We send our 1.4 to the New York Jets. Getting 1.10 + 2.9 + 5.7 + 6.6 in return. That’s probably going to be our last trade. That gives us 3 picks in the top 11 and 9 picks in the top 42.

1.4 New York Jets select CB Jacobs

We’re back on the clock. I see the following options for us: LT Austin Kato, G Jamie Schultz, WR Alvin Rude and DE Bryan Choisser. There’s depth behind Choisser and I really like Heuring later in the first. Rude and Schultz look like slam dunks.
We are going to start of by securing our future QB’s backside

1.5 Los Angeles Rams select Austin Kato, Left Tackle, Colorado

1.6 Washington Commanders select DE Choisser
1.7 New York Giants select S Clemmons
1.8 Carolina Panthers G Schultz

There’s one player left from the list above. The selection is easy. Some will say it’s a slight reach. But we are confident he’s the best receiver in the class.

1.9 Los Angeles Rams select Alvin Rude, Wide Receiver, Wisconsin

1.10 Buffalo Bills select T Jeffries

At 1.11 we once again consider trading down. DE Heuring and S Blalock are our targets. We decide to take S Blalock. He’ll be a prime candidate to switch to cornerback and lock that position for the next 10 years.

1.11 Los Angeles Rams select Frankie Blalock, Defensive Back, Oregon State

1.12 Bengals select S Smith
1.13 Buccs select T Cronk
1.14 49’ers select ILB Ross
1.15 Browns select OLB Griffin
1.16 Saints select S Hampton
1.17 Jaguars select DT Hopper

The next selections go CB Vance, WR Boehler, RB Raven, OLB Sanderson, TE Lavorin, S Berberich

We consider trading up but wait a few picks.

S Werndorff, QB Teal, T Ragone, RB McConell, DT Malone, DT Newton goes off the board

At 1.30 DE Heuring is still on the board. We have a top-10 grade on him. We package 2.1 and 5.1 and sent it to Houston for 1.30.

1.30 Los Angeles Rams select Richard Heuring, Defensive End, Georgia Tech

The next selections are G Givens, S Sanford, FB Vance and T Sampson.

Selection 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 are ours.

Our board say DE Rose. We aren’t hesitating. Rose and Heuring will be a tremendous DE duo.

2.2 Los Angeles Rams select Omar Rose, Defensive End, Florida State

We keep working the trenches with our next four picks.

2.3 Los Angeles Rams select Kai Doyle, Guard, Wake Forest
2.4 Los Angeles Rams select Glen Doty, Center, Mississippi State
2.8 Rams select Derek Garcia, Tackle, Morgan State
2.10 Rams select Allen Middleton, DT, Slippery Rock

The third round goes as follows:

3.1 - Colin McIntyre, CB, Arkansas
3.3 - Jeffery Bajorek, RB, Northwestern
3.4 - Chase Danie, WR, California
3.5 - Deron Thweat, QB, Ohio State
3.7 - Ronald Manabe, G, Washington

That’s it for the third round. Suddenly there’s a run on linebackers and we are really high on Javier Hartl from Indiana. We package two fourths in exchange for a middle third and a 7th.

3.19 - Javier Hartl, ILB, Indiana

The rest of the draft went like this

4.1 - Nolan Tinker, ILB, Bowling Green
4.4 - Roderick Knechtel, DT, Southern California
5.3 - Malachi Hinrichs, TE, Pittsburgh
5.4 - Donte Ellard, S, Arkansas
5.7 - Joseph Griffiths, CB, Sourthern California
6.1 - Rodney Shello, S, Air Force
6.3 - Grady James, WR, South Carolina
6.5 - Francisco Davisaon, ILB, South Carolina
6.6 - Rickey Kinney, RB, Western Carolina
7.1 - Donny Ford, QB, Louisiana Monroe
7.3 - Darnell Emmons, TE, Iowa
7.4 - Randall Ross, DE, Nevada
7.5 - Curtis Bixler, S, Arizona State
7.10 - Harold Shumway, T, Washington State
7.18 - Ian Buckley, OLB, Southern California

We plan on bringing the maximum amount of players into the preseason. It still means cutting away 22 players before preseason starts.

We cut the following 22 players.

PRESEASON CUTS

Preseason is over. A win over the Chiefs, a tie against Oakland and two losses against Buffalo and Miami.
It’s cutdown day… Let’s take a look at our roster going forward

Thweat will be our starter. I believe this guy will become a solid starter in this league. Ford will be the backup. Even though he’s lost some potential he’ll become a decent backup. Flowers will be probably active as well. He is in holding duties. He’s horrible at throwing, but he’s a magician with the ball in his hands.

Our backfield had a tough camp. Our dreams of a big guy, little guy combo goes down the drain as both Koslosky and Kinney have bad camps. Kinney will be the backup, Koslosky will have duty on special teams. FB Schneider will be kept active. He’s also solid on special teams.

Hinrichs will be our starter. Quaal had a nice camp and will be our TE2. HE can’t catch but boy can he block!
The last spots go to Williams and Emmons. The last one will be inactive. Baltuskonis had been a disappointment and will be cut.

We keep all six of our recievers. Alvin Rude looks like he is everything we hoped for. The rest of the bunch is serviceable at best. Timmermann will be cut.

We hit on most of our interior line. Looks like we over time might have competition on C. The guard position seems locked up. Doyle and Manabe should open some holes in the run game. Bell gets cut, McElroy will be inactive.

Not what we had hoped. A horrible camp, but Kato still look like a good player. Let’s hope one of the others emerges as valid starting option.

We cut Bernard and will move forward with Harden, Naylor and Lang on special teams.

Hampton is history. Despite poor camps Heuring and Rose look like potential solid starters at DE.

Trigg comes out of nowhere and has a great camp. He will start. Knechtel and Middleton will play sparingly due to us playing a 3-4. Melancon will be cut.

This sucks. The bad thing is we need to play 4 of them the first season. We don’t cut anyone even though its tempting. We move Lake to the outside. Hartl look like a differencemaker.

Blalock should be a lockdown corner for 10 years. Hopefully Oliver or Griffith will develop into a cb that is not a liability.

Maybe the weakest group on our team. We move CB Boyd to S and hope they’ll build good cohesion. Burley just avoids the cut.

READY FOR THE SEASON

We have 6 players on the green page. Including 3rd round guard Manabe. 30th pick DE Heuring tops all rookies.

All our players are ready for the season.

We’re not going to get our hopes up. We don’t want to embarrass ourselves and get ready for year two with the right coaches.

SEASON 1

A couple of wins as hoped/expected. Pretty much dead last in all major stats.
Thweat looks pretty turnover prone with 21 interceptions and 4 fumbles. Our running game didn’t really get going. If Thweat is going to be successful we need the running game to control the game. Especially as we invested heavily on the O-line in the draft.

Defensively we nearly cut OLB Buckley before the season. Due to injury he started 8 games and contributed with 7 sacks. 1 shy of team leader DE Rose.
We only had 10 turnovers and only 5 interceptions. We need to make that number higher. Especially as our offense had 33 turnovers.

ILB Javier Hartl is named Defensive Rookie of the year and 2nd team all-pro. Solid rookie season.

OFFSEASON

Time to build a staff room that fits the players.

Head coach - Blake Lichter

Former Offensive Guard. Very good at motivating the players, and his teams usually has a good discipline. He’s known for developing players.

Offensive Coordinator - Marshall Rieger (Stays)

Will get another chance at it. He likes to run a smashmouth offense and is one of the best playcallers around. Worked his way up from WR coach.

Defensive Coordinator - Donnie Nichols

We move on from Jacob Gunn who unquestionably will get a gig elsewhere. We go with talented young Nichols from the college game. Nichols are a D-Line guru an plays a 4-3 that will fit our players much more than Gunns 3-4.

Assistant Coach - Cesar Fabian (Stays)

We keep Cesar around. He’s well liked with the players. He’s made progress with several of our youngsters already. It’s easy to see player development is Cesars best attribute. Cesar adds knowledge to the secondary, a part of the team we were not happy with last year.

Strengh Coordinator - Ricky Tirtha

We like Tirtha for his solid knowledge both on Strength Training, but also on Conditioning.

Alright. This challenge will be a bit tougher than anticipated. The Rams have a 0 seat stadium in my game. Build in 2023 and can’t be rebuild before 15 years have past. Guess we’ll take a serious loss every year.

READY FOR SEASON 2

We win 3 preseason games and are going flying into the season. We like to continue the trend, but as long as we build on last years record we’re satisfied.

CAMP WINNERS/LOSERS

Deron Thweat looks like a baller. He’s progressed nicely so far. With the regression of Bajorek our running game looks poor. We might have to change our filosophy going forward.

Our linebacker group as a whole, look like a very poor unit. Luckily Hartl could make up for some of the shortcomings on OLB.
The Secondary had a good camp. We needed that. The group is barely serviceable.

Let’s get it on.

4-12 and six of our losses were within one score. Decent progression.
Deron Thweat got a bit better. He was flanked by a decent running attack, but he played almost all of the season with star WR Rude.

Defensively we really stepped up. We were in the middle of the league in total yards. We were 4th in passing. Primarily down to our DE combo had 25 sacks. We went from 10 turnovers to 2nd in the league with 29.

Hartl is simply a beast. He is awarded 1st team all-pro and defensive player of the year. He had a game with 23 tackles, 1 int, 1 sack and 2 forced fumbles!

Defensive player of the year: ILB Hartl

OFFSEASON 3

We switch offensive coordinator and goes with RB guru Colby Church. Despite being a specialist in running backs Colby likes to run a west coast offense that will fit Thweat well. Church is a decent playcaller and has decent player development.

Our new offensive coordinator brings his new gameplan to the training camp. The players are excited!
We go through preseason 1-3 and without any serious injuries.

That downfall of DE Heuring is worrying. He’s been one of our best players so far. His hit comes out of nowhere ☹

A good season from the boys. Thweat missed 10 games with two injuries. He was 4-2 as a starter. Ford did a pretty good job filling in.
Our west coast offense has benefitted not only the passing game but also the running game. Koslosky has made some incredibly important plays. Rude hit 1000 yard receiving. Overall we were in the top half of the league in yards.

Defensively we were 3rd in overall yardage. Hartl had another monster season. 5 sacks, 6 interceptions from MLB. Enough for another DPOY
We’re yet to see Blalock become the difference-maker we need him to be.
All-in-all a great result. Let’s see where it goes from here if Thweat keeps healthy and the cohesion kicks in.

Not really what we hoped for. A start hampered by the need to give subpar players playing time to keep them happy. Let’s hope it worked!

Bajorek was 5 yards shy of 1000 yards. WR Rude managed another 1000 yard season. Overall our offense was pretty good yardage wise. But we couldn’t get it in the endzone.

Defensively Hartl was out for 4 games and never really got going. Our defense had a pretty poor season.

All-pro 1st team: K Naylor
All-Pro 2nd team: G Doyle, T Kato, CB Blalock
Leagues fastest man: WR Rude

Great season with our first playoff birth. Unfortunately Thweat got injured In the final game of the season.

McConnell had his first career start and we crushed Washington.

Then our punter went down and our kicker had to take on punting duties. We had more yards than Seattle, but they felt like the better team throughout. They go on to win the Super Bowl.

Both offense and defense was in the top-11 in yards and points. A solid season.

Our running game starts to gel as we have two 800-yards rushers. Rude continue to impress with his 1700 yards receiving.

Defensively a healthy Hartl just dominates again. We would have liked to see more from our D-Line. Hopefully they’ll improve for next season.

We were the 3rd seed and started the playoffs against Chicago. We won on a last second field goal.

Philadelphia waited in the divisional and in another tight affair we prevailed 20-17.

Against New Orleans we never had momentum. We came within one win from the big show.

An incredibly injury-riddled season. Our three best players were out against NO.

We’ll come back stronger.

Without Rude, Manabe and Thweat for most of the season we couldn’t compete on the level we wanted.

OFFSEASON 9

Once again the same staff returns. Our poor financials hits us here.

We loose CB Cottrill to repetitive concussions and C Devine to retirement. We’re down to 49 players.

Everyones regressed. Last chance to get this. Let’s get it on.

Cohesion is great

SEASON 9

We sneak into the playoffs. Let’s see how it goes.

First game is at home against Washington. We’re without Blalock and Doty.
DE Rose leads us to a 23-13 win. His statline is 6 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 ff, 2 hurries.

Next up New Orleans.

Another win 23-17. Kinney runs for 100 yards in a tight affair.

Conference final time in Dallas.

Dallas miss a game-winning field goal from 50 yards as time expires. We win 20-18 and are in the Super Bowl!

SEASON 9 SUPER BOWL

In the super bowl we’re up against the Denver Broncos. 1st seed in the AFC. They beat Pittsburgh and Cincinnati to get to the super bowl.

The offense is led by second year sensation RB Borders and game-manager QB Palmateer. Overall a pretty loaded offense.

On defense the front-7 is strong but their secondary looks vulnerable.

We have a pretty healthy team besides starting TE Hinrichs who’s out.

Let’s go get this!

1st quarter:

Denver scores a field goal on their first possession. 0-3.

On their second possession they score the first TD of the game. 0-10.

We get nothing from our possessions.

2nd quarter:

We simply can’t move the ball.

Just before half time Thweat throws an interception. They return it 51 yards to the house. 0-17.

This is getting ugly fast.

3rd quarter:

Denver return the opening kickoff for a touchdown. 0-24.

2nd play of our next possession. Thweat throws another pick-six. 0-31.

We switch at QB. McConnell lead the team on a long drive ending in a TD run by himself. 7-31.

We can’t stop anything. Another TD for Denver. 7-38.

McConnell finds RB Koslosky for a 4-yard touchdown. 14-38. But obviously too late.

4th quarter:

Another garbage time TD by McConell. 16 yards to TE Williams. 21-38.

GAME OVER

OFFSEASON 10

RB Kinney, T Garcia, OLB Lake and CB Griffith retires. We have 46 players left. Let’s see if we make it through a season.

The staff stays the same.

We go through the preseason 3-1.

I think we have enough depth to move around that we might make it through the season.

23 of our players are rated lower than 30. So it might be a long season.

SEASON 10

We loose our first 3 games. But then only 3 the rest of the way and go 9-6-1. Playoffs!

Atlanta awaits. Besides always injured CB Blalock we’re pretty healthy.

We loose in OT. A decent effort. But we are simply too weak.

Thweat had his 3rd best season. Running backs Koslosky(rated 12) and Bajorek(rated 22) combines for 2256 all-purpose yards and 14 touchdowns.

We had a good run.

All-Pro 1st team: G Manabe
All-Pro 2nd team: ILB Hartl
