Definitely Front Page Sports football for me. I think I had all versions.

Yes, of course, knowing what Jim can do with the stats its probably laughable these days but it was so awesome back in the day!

XOR NFL Challenge did well for itself in the 80's.

I still play NFL Challenge occasionally. That game was definitely #2 after FBPro.

Blood bowl was one of my first thoughts. I have the Chaos Edition, and the AI isn't great, but it's still a lot of fun to play.

FB Pro, especially 97
and
Tecmo Super Bowl

Such deep love for both, in very different ways.

My answer is still Tecmo Super Bowl.

But I was playing Madden 23 (single player) this weekend, and I wanted to give it some love. I was struck by how realistic the game feels compared to past versions. I was playing against the 49ers, and Brock Purdy was the QB, and they beat me with lots of perfectly placed 5-8 yard passes to McCaffery and Kittle. Then when I was over-focused on stopping the short passing game, Debo Samuel would take a pitch around the end for 20 yards.

And on offense, I had two separate drives end when Bosa obliterated my tackle on 2nd down and sacked me before I even knew he was there.

It did not feel like playing generic football team X. It felt like playing the 49ers. And for all we shit on Madden, that's a pretty hard thing to pull off.

We played nothing but Front Page Sports in college (with a little bit of Tecmo Super Bowl). Rules were no Bo Jackson and no Randall Cunningham (I mean QB Eagles).

Between FPS Pro, Heroes of M&M2, and hot seat Civ, We rarely made it to class.

I say this and then I find out EA is going to release official modding tools for Madden 24. Now buying the PC version becomes tempting. I'm going to wait to see what happens, but if modders can make franchise mode better.....

I played a game called Computer Quarterback on my Atari 800XL. You were able to create 1-100 strengths by all positions on a data disc and I made a massive multi disc creating every Texas High School team in Texas using Dave Campbells Texas Football as my reference for player strengths.
I then created district play, and a 6 game playoff bracket to determine the State Champ. I remember my whole football team over at the house when our team was playing for the district championship. We lost 21-6. I kept notebooks filled with every game, stats, temp, prognosticator, then a summary and quote from the winning and losing coach.
Beyond school, dating, sports, and my imaginary football planet, people used to ask me what it was like to "never be bored".
All those notebooks disappeared when I headed to college, and I don't regret the time I put into it. It made my mind feel fertile and fresh and it was really fun.
