I think it is to do that or make sure to elect a Speaker that will guarantee that the shut down will happen. Unless there is a bipartisan candidate selected, the shut down is a forgone conclusion.

hmmmm there were rumours that dems would work with emmer to get him elected. If so i can't see why he would withdraw just because his party got mad at him for it

Because the only word dirtier than disfunctional is bipartisan.

This is ultimately if Trump maintains his influence on GOP House or if his influence starts to wane. So, fighting for soul of the GOP House.

Lot's of pizza going to be delivered to Congress tonight. Let's hope they can agree on someone. Still rooting for the bowtie guy.

House Republican: We will "stay here all night until we pick somebody"

In a sign of the general chaos that has enveloped the House GOP conference, the candidate forum will be reduced to “have people give a minute speeches, not go through the long process, and elect a speaker,” according to South Carolina Rep. Ralph Norman.

I believe McHenry is acceptable to the Dems. So let’s give him more temporary powers until Jan while the GOP do their infighting.

And the new contestants are:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/polit...-speaker-vote/
Quote:
Several Republican candidates for House speaker have emerged since Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) dropped out just hours after having been elected the GOP nominee on an internal vote. The candidates include:
  • Reps. Byron Donalds (Fla.),
  • Charles J. “Chuck” Fleischmann (Tenn.),
  • Mark Green (Tenn.),
  • Mike Johnson (La.)
  • Roger Williams (Tex.).
House Republicans are meeting behind closed doors.

Does McHenry even want the job? Guy has been in the closet for years and I don't think he wants to draw too much attention to himself. First time he pisses off the far-right and they'll blast that shit everywhere.

I can't wait until McCarthy gets voted back in and Jordan learns he's really the assistant to the speaker.

It's a stupid idea and the most Rube Goldbergy way possible to solve a problem entirely of the GOP's own making.

So it will pass their conference easily.

Why would you think he is acceptable his first action was to toss Pelosi out of her office while she was at Feinsteins funeral. Fuck the bow tie guy and rest of them.

Per CNBC a week ago …

Quote:
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., has signaled openness about electing McHenry, who was a top GOP negotiator during a partisan clash in May over the nation's debt limit, as speaker pro tem.

"We continue to say that we're seeking a bipartisan path forward that's authentic, genuine, and that we want to agree upon in good faith," Jeffries said Tuesday night.

Looks like Johnson may be gaining steam with a +12.

But 34 increasing as well is a sign he is not winning over detractors. I still think in the end a nutcase will win and he might be that nutcase, but nothing suggests he will be.

The McCarthy as speaker and Jordan as assistant speaker plan is the dumbest idea yet.

Which probably means that's what we'll end up with.

Rep. Drew Ferguson requested by unanimous consent to reveal who the “other” votes were on the second of the House Republican conference's secret-ballots for speaker, according to sources in the room, and 33 out of 34 votes were for Kevin McCarthy, while one was for Jim Jordan.

I read House is reconvening at noon today. My guess is McCarthy will vote for Johnson but will encourage/try to subvert the vote by proxy. He wouldn't mind one more round.

But I've not read of strong public resistance against Johnson so far. So should be another fun day (and night) on how this plays out.

It looks like Johnson is going to win. They wore the moderates down just as suspected. The Speaker of the House will now be a chief elections denier. What could possibly go wrong?

The only reason this took this long is because MAGA Republicans needed to figure out that you just needed to pick a quieter election denier, not friggin Jim Jordan. They're not bright, but we all knew that.

Yeah reading about this guy it seems he is a Trumper by any name just a quieter one. He only has 6 years in Congress and will be easily manipulated by the crazies.

I guess if this was a test for the soul of the GOP we can safely say they have no soul. Matt Gaetz ends up winning the gambit. For some reason a little ditty has been running through my head since I hears Johnson won. It goes something like "We are living in Hell...Living in Hell...Living in Hell...Living in Hell..."

Yeah the only positive that could come of this is if it hurts them in the 2024 election at multiple levels. And that seems unlikely, or at least, being tied to Trump is certainly a gamble the party is willing to continue taking.

It seems the new Speaker of the House doesn't have a bank account or any assets.

Neither does his wife... or their children.

Maybe it's just me... but that seems really odd.

This was kind of inevitable once the GOP decided on a "pick a guy we know nothing about because no one knows anything bad about him" strategy.

All the dirty laundry would come out later.

Don't think it'll matter one way or the other. The persuadable voters tend to be low-information, so they aren't following Speaker of the House financial disclosure form news like the rest of us weirdos.

And he was one of the people that caused this
