I can’t offer much knowledge, as I haven’t played blackjack in almost 15 years now. I know it used to be possible to come out slightly ahead on food comps at the Stations Casinos just by playing perfect basic strategy, only because they allowed doubling down after splitting and had a fairly generous comp rate on their players’ card. I doubt that is the case these days.

For card counters, blackjack has been dead for some time now, with continuous shuffling machines, short pay 6 to 5 on blackjacks, reshuffling early, computer algorithms to catch counters, etc. Of course, the squares are totally oblivious to these, and they continue to merrily give their money away.

Numberphile is a YouTube channel that explains mathematical concepts for the layperson.

They just did a video on Martingale. One thing I didn't realize is that, even with a hypothetically infinite bankroll and infinite table limits, your odds of doubling your money are still < 50%. As they explain, it works out to be 1/e.

Maybe blackjack really isn't my game.

We were in Vegas two weeks ago, I spent about 45 minutes at a blackjack table, got from $200 to $395, got out of there, paid for my nice dinner, the end. Some other dude that sat down at the table while I was there went broke on $200 in about 15 minutes. It was rough.

I played a $5 table in Deadwood once. Dropped $20 on 4 hands that weren't even close. Just a bad run of cards. I walked away and never played tables again. Just not worth that sort of short term loss. I could spend my money better on computer games. I've never played a table with cash I felt like I could afford to lose beyond that. I wonder if it'll change, but I don't play lottery or anything like that either, so I doubt it. I'd rather blow cash at the strip club or something like that in that case.

It was mentioned in the NFL thread this week and my "want to get work done" this week is pretty low, which happens to be inversely proportionate to my "read random junk on the internet" quotient

Hit quads on Mississippi stud today(40:1). Too bad I was only playing $5s. I’ve looked up the odds on the game before and I see it’s 5% or so house advantage but optimized strategy you can get that down to about 1.5%. Or possibly lower if people are tipping their cards. Does anyone else play? Thoughts on the game? Triple/double/single?

There is no simpler, clearer, exciting casino card game than blackjack.

I think 35-43 are the real core of it, what makes this a legend.

QS's stats and "oh, fuck", jb's roulette wisdom, QS's exasperated "please stop", Subby egging jb on, jb's "blackjack might not be your game", QS's resignation, Subby dancing in delight

I love how post #209 just casually jumpstarts a whole new discussion with an even dumber theory about blackjack.

Post #219 beginning with "While it may not be proven mathematically" is just gold.

Martingale (betting system) - Wikipedia

The best summary I can give for why this system sucks comes from that article:

People think long losing streaks are impossible, but they aren't. In fact, they are practically guaranteed to happen eventually (the longer you play, the more likely they are to happen). When it does happen, just ONCE, you go broke.

Consider that it's not even that long a losing streak we are talking about here, in most cases. For instance if you have $1000 and are betting $5 to start, you will be broke after 9 losses in a row. That streak is not that rare. Even in a coinflip game that should happen about 1 in 500 tries. It could happen the very first time you try it. Blackjack is not a coinflip game. Your chances are worse long term in blackjack than in coinflipping, so it will happen sooner than in coinflipping on average. Remember, it only takes that one losing streak, and it WILL eventually happen.

thats why i always stick with heads or tails. no jumping back and fourth

Well, one thing I believe in, is not always doubling on eleven. If the dealer shows six or less, yes I double, but not with a seven or more showing.

I always enjoy betting a line, and then doubling on it. More exciting than betting just red or black. I will occasionally bet a number and around a number when something hasn't hit for a while. I understand the math that it doesn't increase the odds, but it is fun. I have hit a number along with bets with all four edges doing that before. That was a great night. I have won more than I have lost at Roulette, but that is just plan small ssmple size. If I played constantly, I know I would be broke.

He’s up something like 666k(allegedly). Dunno if it’s USD or NZD(approx 392k) or if the entire thing is a ruse.
